I asked, and you delivered. The response to my last video about racing games was... overwhelming to say the least. Turns out there's a lot of people passionate about these kinds of older racing games, and as such there were many suggestions and recommendations. Well, now that I've had time to take in the surprising (to me) amounts of feedback, I've put together a sampling of 6 (or 7) retro racing games from both the 5th and 6th generations. They range from "established classics" to "forbidden fruit" to "a decent romp".
And yes, the 6th gen is retro now because it's been over 10 years since the last PS2 games came out. And yes, I will die on that hill.

Tokyo Xtreme Racer was my all time favorite racing game series, especially with stories and ALL RIVALS has their identity to gave you some kinda lore, also Ridge Racer was my favorite as well with their racing feels and amazing music well blended for pure fun~

Aún tengo la tradición de jugar al Ridge Racer Type 4 luego de la celebración de año nuevo porque; justamente, la fase 4 del GP final tiene lugar durante esa festividad. Asimismo, el director de la escudería Solvalou Enki Gilbert, tenía gran parecido a un profesor que tuve en la universidad que era muy estricto y del cual aprendí que “solo trasciende aquel que es capaz de esforzarse más allá que los demás”. 16:23 that issue was resolved a while ago in the nightly version of pcsx2.
Also both Juiced and Ford Racing have a PC version.
R4, TXR, PGR, and GRID are all AMAZING games. PGR2 holds the cake for my favorite of all time (mainly due to the early XBL lobbies-what an amazing time, also that soundtrack). So many good ones out there. I remember having a good time with Rage Racer back in the day as well. Oh oh, and I almost left out TOP Gear 1 & 2. Hours playing those as a kid.
I've got a suggestion if you ever need to revisit more old racing games - XGRA. I know you don't like racing games where you've got weapons, and you couldn't get along with Xtreme-G 3. But it feels completely different to XG3. You may want to give it a try.
The music from Ridge Racer as a franchise is HEAVENLY! I thoroughly enjoy your videos about racing games and would love to see more! I am hopeful that you expand your audience and get more views, I like your style Squid man.

I'm currently playing Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift but in Japanese "kaidou battle". I kinda just been free balling with no use of a translator 😂
The Tokyo Xtreme Racer series and Import Tuner Challenge are the proper definitions of Car RPG and they do it pretty well.

Toca race driver 3 could be interesting to look back at for the next entry of this series (and maybe later check out the first 2 grid games?). either way good stuff, keep it up!
Are all these Tokyo Extreme games that difficult? BTW.. Emulating the PS2 always has been quite difficult. I don't know your specs but I'm running a 5800X3D and it runs most PS2 games smoothly, even Wipeout Fusion which is a demanding game to run smooth. But when I play SSX I can't use a certain recommended setting or it will slow down. And this PC can run PS3/Xbox360/Switch emulators too. It all depends on which game you want to play and most likely the emulator isn't ready for it yet. Anyways, thanks, will try the PSP Ridge Racer game
Drift is hard until you do each stage at night so much everything is familiar to you, bumper camera feels least weird & never had any problems with Automatic. Also If you chose the March EK10 & didn´t spend on it, the Pulsar can be bought in like the 3rd day (which triviliazes both Hakone, Haruna & most of Iroha B with only Tires Upgrade)
I wanna see how far can the AE86 go in Downhill from the beginning.

Been replaying and finishing this game every single year since 5 yrs ago, and I still don't even know how much contents SQARESOFT hid in this game. LOTS of engine/chassis/body combinations, tons of race events.. It really feels like TXRD, WMMT and NFSU combined in one package. Outstanding replay value for sure if you get used to its tricky handling physics and avoiding unnecessary encounter races :)
blur is an amazing pick I still play it to this day!
Will mention this, there are a few patches for juiced on pc to run much better than the emulated ps2 counterpart, it would certainly help if it worked, and even with my pc, the ps2 emulated version isnt very functional, glad to see another video from this series, hope to see more!

@@squiddythekid3976 havent checked if there is any patches for the PS2 version, i play the PC version as online is active too
RACING LAGOON MY BELOVED
but yeah its a really long game, whole lot of grinding and clearing out areas before moving onto the next one (so much so that the ending is "blocked" by what you'd think are fully optional races)
but i just love how long term it is, even though i never actually played a jrpg
and btw, the silhouette skyline is a r30, and so is the skyline in the game
also didnt even remember how the wmmt and mc logos are basically the same thing with the kanji and the midnight, type of detail you're so used to seeing that you forget
to be fair, the r30 and r31 skylines look similar to each other
@@squiddythekid3976 the same way the r32 and r33 look similar, theyre still pretty easy to tell apart
I finished racing lagoon two times 😂 best game ihave ever played.
Rallisport challenge 2 was a great game.
There's no reason to emulate juiced when the PC version is fully playable.

okay now I brought that out to myself haha, MegaTen is abbreviation for Megami Tensei (or Shin Megami Tensei), a big series of games with lots of spinofs, you probably heard of Persona, the most popular MegaTen spinoff series.

There's something totally wrong with Juiced. It's not your PC hardware that does it, it's probably the software/ROM itself, even with the Stenzek's version of PCSX2 (the Nightly build, who created DuckStation), which fixed Ridge Racer 5, Juiced cannot seem to run properly on Emulation. Its sequel doesn't fair any better either. Just ignore it and just play it on the actual PS2.

You absolutely have to try Import Tuner Challenge, its a japanese wangan racing game with pretty satisfying difficulty curve and car modifications . EDIT: I commented this before watching the video, its essentially Tokyo Extreme Racer Zero with Xbox 360 graphics lol

Burnout 3, need for speed 3, and test drive 5 deserves a mention. And you forgot ford racing 3 as that is also a great game as well.
I prefer ridge racer 2 on psp over type 4, because the latters lack of play modes and the grand prix being very repetitive and only having time attack and no single race mode, it prevented R4 from being a legend in my book, despite top notch music and presentation.

Pretty far out of left field, but it'd be fun to see you try Dirt to Daytona. Its a PS2-era simcade, but with enough sim to reveal the surprising technicality of oval racing that gets overlooked due to its redneck stereotype.
It does a great job of immersing you into the role of a grassroots, hometown racer working out of their garage to slowly forge a path into the big leagues of the most American motorsport out there. Sponsor management, advanced car setups, series progression, and full race weekend participation do a lot to boost the already great racing gameplay. The menus are even themed diegetically as if you're hauling your racecar trailer to the county fairgrounds and using a laptop trackside to monitor performance.
