  • Keeping to the theme of my previous video, here is a mashup of three further Dorset towers from across two Jack Pease outings - not enough footage of each to justify uploading them as individual videos, hence the mixture. Glanvilles Wootton and Margaret Marsh were filmed 31st October 2013; Corfe Mullen is even older, filmed 31st May 2013.
Glanvilles Wootton: A jobbing ground floor six, I can't remember too much about these at all! A hotchpotch of dates and founders, the oldest bell (5th) dates from 1450, and the newest (treble) from 1996, at which time the bells were rehung in a new frame by Andrew Nicholson. Some Stedman Doubles here - a treat for Aaron, and - it would appear - a warmup touch for Lillington (the tower we visited straight after these!).
Margaret Marsh: We arrived here in the pitch black; being October, it was also bloody cold! At the time of visiting, they were a complete four cast in 1874 by Warners, and overhauled by Arthur Fidler in 1970. The handling was reasonable, and they felt in reasonable nick too, but they were a bit flighty, with a fairly long, unguided draft, and fairly quiet inside. As the final tower of the day, most people (sensibly!) had a quick ring and left - hence we were down to 3 for the final touch!
In 2016, the bells were rehung and tuned by Matthew Higby & Co to mark the 90th birthday of HM Queen Elizabeth II; the tenor is now 3-3-3 in C#. They were also augmented to 5 with a secondhand treble, cast in 1890, and donated by the Keltek Trust (Matthew informs me he purchased the bell from the late Geoffrey Armitage, who thought it previously resided at a military college somewhere as a clock bell). I now need a revisit!
Corfe Mullen: Saving the best till last, these are a cracking six! Cast by Gillett & Johnston of Croydon in 1922, they sound splendid. A short touch of Kent here, to allow Jack to turn the tenor in :-)
