Hahahaha I love it! I looked at the title and went "what the hey is that?" Now I know and it makes me sound so much smarter and more professional! I can always use a way to sound smarter. I get just as excited as you about compost but my husband totally does not get it. One year my husband asked me what I wanted for Christmas. I told him compost. He looked at me like I was crazy. He bought me jewelry, which is pretty much wasted on me. I took the jewelry back after Christmas and used the money to buy 2 truckloads of compost. I had beautiful flowers and veggies the next spring, summer and into the fall and that was a wonderful gift. Sometimes we hear beep - beep - beep and I smile. A local tree service doesn't even ask. They simply back up in my driveway and dump their trucks and I take it from there. They benefit because they don't have to pay to use the landfill and I benefit because I have lots of materials to work with, even after I pick through and get rid of larger limbs or things I don't want to use. Sometimes there is so much material that I have to load it in my pickup and drive it to our property in the country since I haven't found a reliable source out there yet. I have improved the soil around here so much that anywhere I dig I get lots of earthworms. I might start a side business - selling fishing worms or the castings from the worms. ~Sherrie in South Carolina

LOL. Only a Homesteader would get so excited about a compost pile and earthworms! Right there with you Hollars! Where we are in Australia, it is so dry that when we moved here our land was literally lime stone covered in about 8 to 10 inches of sand. Water just ran off. It wouldn't soak in. But a few years later after some animals, compost, straw as mulch and lots of water we now have soil and earthworms and a lush green kitchen garden. Mother nature is wonderful.

What a perfect title! One can tell that Joel Salatin has some influence around "these here parts." Love it!
The "chicken inspection" was hilarious! Who would have thought something so simple could be so fascinating!?!?
I had seen a pallet compost bin like this on Justin Rhodes' channel, and when my neighbors gave me 4 a couple months ago I put them together just like that in our backyard! The level of what's in it is now down to the halfway mark.
Good job with the "Good morning, Beautiful People!" You made me smile wide.

Greetings, this is Rev. Glen Horn from Pensacola, Fl. If you would get some bags of lime and spread it on your compost pile, it will break the leaves down to soil. It worked for my grandmother for years. All dirt she ever bought was potting soil. You are doing a fantastic job getting your place set up. Just keep praying that Almighty God will continue to give you wisdom and wise counsel on what to continue to do to improve your plans there. Hope all goes well for you’all. God richly bless you!

You are all doing such a fantastic job and the kids are learning and don't even see it as a lesson but as helping dad out with chores. It will do them well if they take up in your footsteps. I think it's just awesome. This is how we learn without feeling like we are in a classroom! Love it! You both remind me of a saying my dad always said as we learned well from life and a large family......."when the going gets tough, the tough get going".........so anyone who falls on difficult times in life either lets it take them over or they get up and get moving and resolve what needs to be taken care of. Another of my fathers says was " hard work never killed anyone".........and so true. All his siblings lived into their later 80's and 90's and he had cousins who lived to over 100. All worked hard and had a strong work ethic and yet they knew when to rest and chill, ergo all their children worked hard and so it goes through the generations.
You two are prime examples. When you see a need you set to work to fix it. And you do! You are both talented beyond and always with a good smile or a comment of positive nature.
Excited to see Ben's knives in production whenever he starts those. I am sure they are beautiful from previous photos I have seen. Wondering if any are in the works or available to view and/or purchase.
Excited for that and am envisioning Megs explosion of soap production! You are rocking it and rolling it!
Could you even imagine 5 years ago where your lives would be today! What a blessing and life challenge and you are "in it to win it'..........rock on and keep on keeping on!!!!!
Blessing and enjoy your Christmas break!!!!!

My kids do work but my son lives with his mom and he is addicted to gaming. your boys are great helpers. you two are not afraid to work either and that is awesome. Just a tip to make things easier: you only need 3 sides to the compost bin. Then you can just dump the leaves and manure directly from the wheel barrel instead of scooping it over the pallet walls. Farming is about efficiently using time and energy. Things you never have enough of on a farm. You should also grow some root vegetables like radish and turnip to loosen the clay soil you have. You don't need to eat it yourself, that's what the pig is for.

Rent a wood chipper after you collect a good amount of dead trees. Turn it into a fine mulch and add that to your chicken coop and then into your compost pile. (Or just use the wood from the sections of forrest that you're already clearing with the pigs) Also check local farms for spent hay so you can also add that to your compost process. Also you could start a worm farm for potent worm castings. Just feed them food scraps, BUT make sure you blend the food scraps (fruits and veggies) with water to better feed and hydrate the Red Wriggler worms.

When it comes time to spread it on your garden beds, don't bother digging it in. Let the worms do it for you. You can plant straight into it. Where I am it's called No-Dig. Charles Dowding is quite the guru on this method. ❤

Because it's such heavy clay and very compacted the first year you have to dig or the earth will crack in summer, but after that you can do no till garden

Compost is my love language 😂😂😂! Great job! Yes sir homegrown compost is so EXCITING! Our bins are made of pallets as well. We actually buy red worms from time to time and add them to our piles to speed up the process. Adds the benefit of worm castings. I actually make a concoction using black strap molasses to keep the fire ants out. Here in Mississippi fire ants will ruin a compost pile. Love your channel. Oh and I LOVE those nesting boxes😊. Keep up the good work and God’s blessings to y’all!❤️

What's the recipe to keep fire ants out?

    • @LittleCountryCabin
      @LittleCountryCabin 4 года назад +2

Becca g I put about 1 cup of Black Strap molasses in my watering can full of warm water and saturate the pile every so often. If you’ve already got them in the pile you might have to make it stronger and do it everyday for a few days. They HATE it and will pack up and leave. I try to stay ahead of them by treating couple times a week. Hope this helps😉

Old school composting recommends adding an inch of soil for every two feet of soil and manure. It adds billions of micro-organisms above and beyond what the leaves and manure can provide. We always used the added soil to speed up the decomposition phase of the humus. :)

Good video. We live in the suburb in South Louisiana and have hens and a neighbor who gives me all his grass clippings for my ladies. Every 3 months we clean out the chicken yard and use the compost in our back yard garden. Now we have fall crops of broccolli, kale, green onions, bell peppers, lettuce, and tomatoes. I also have 13 pineapple plants in a raised bed. The bed is 24 feet long by 4 feet wide and 2 cinder blocks high. Last year we harvested 2 pineapples. I also grow Bay leaf and Rosemary. I wish your grand boys could come help me. Blessings to you and yours.
