Another fine adventure under your belt David, such a full coverage of the terrain and wilderness atmosphere, I feel that I can avoid the pain and now just sit back in my armchair and watch you do all the work from now on, what a joy. Harry

Thanks Harry. I deliberated whether or not to include the lengthy dialogue, filmed sitting by the fire. My dilemma relates to some upcoming foreign travel that will prevent me from filming and uploading. I decided to include the chat on the basis that an explanation of the upcoming hiatus was worthy of inclusion for the regular viewers. I know that I'm running a tiny channel, but it is always best to treat people with respect. And, the mention of a possible Himalayan adventure is a wee hook to keep the viewers onboard. I've learned a lot from the way you film and present your vids, so thanks for that. David

There’s this eco compressed sawdust block you can get that weighs next to nothing, good for the environment and you can light them without fire lighters, they will keep the weight off your back next time and they last a long long time too 🦉🦉🦉🦉alaya. It comes in little round wedges not like those heavy fire blocks you could quite happily fill another rucksack with them and carry them on your front I promise a friend of mine uses them for a ‘Woodburner in a gypsy caravan’ that’s how potent they are and light as a feather ! You can light them with candle wax and a match or a one of those fancy new spark generators you guys light fires with now made of stone, I even bevelled a little hole in one of them once and used the hole contents to ⚡️ 🔥 spark it up with they are a dream but I’ve never seen not even one person on the tube using them, it’s a pity I can’t upload a pic for you to show you, I know for sure they sell them at saw mills, and I’m sure even on Amazon, hope that helps with the weight barring fuel problem😁😁

Good morning Malky, it was good meeting you on the track the other day. I hope the mk2 trailer build goes well. You have an impressive setup for cycle touring and camping. I was pondering the trailer build and wondering how you could strengthen it to take the weight, especially when on rough ground. I thought about double axles but don't know how well a four-wheeled trailer would handle behind the bike. I think your solution for heavier hubs is more sensible. Have you ever thought about adapting a cargo bike? Some of the modern e-bikes are pretty impressive, but I'm guessing they are super expensive. Anyhow, good luck with whichever plan you follow. I'll keep an eye out for you on my travels. ATB, Dave

@@daveoutdoorsscotland2854 Hi dave, Yes impressive to the eye maybe, but bloated and overweight would be a better description. I was towing a 48v 200Ah bank, In the box on top i had a 3m bell tent, an outback stove, tarp, poles, cooking tripod, grill and coleman oven. Mounted up front i had a 40l freezer (with food) then a rack above that to hold my kayak. It used 3% of the battery from the station to my crash site 😁, It was an insane folly of engineering, but a pleusure to build and test. Mk 2 will be much lighter and lower centre of gravity. Maybe see you out on the moor with a less ambitious and more opperational generation of my trailer soon. Sláinte, malky.

Hi Alaya, this particular bothy does not have a fuel source. Everything has to be carried in, making the warmth of the hearth all the more welcome. It is relatively easy to find the location of this bothy, thanks in no small part to the internet. However, it is far enough into the wilds to be enjoyed only by those prepared to put in a fair effort to traverse the rough terrain. Unlike some bothies, this place tends to be frequented mostly by those who respect nature. The river will certainly have fish. I enjoy taking a cast or two and there is no delicacy finer than cooking up a freshly landed fish on the bank. However, I am a sea fisherman and have little skill in freshwater angling. If you have time to check out some of my other videos, you will see some success with the rod and line. ATB, Dave

There’s not one thing wrong with needing solitude, I’m at the part where you’re sat on the lightning struck tree, that weather you have right now ( could change in less than a minute) might bring you some company, there are those who expect to have bothies to themselves, but you don’t strike me as that kind of person, seems like you really do need some solitude and I hope you get it, as there is nothing like it, sometimes. I hope if you do get company, it’s someone who also needs some solitude, and not sadly the bothy party organisers who are spoiling it for everyone and lessening our bothy population, now on with the journey, you are kindly sharing. Hello Alaya, thank you so much for viewing and commenting. I certainly do enjoy periods of solitude. Solitude, for me at least, is a lovely mix of isolation (from the hustle and bustle of the modern world) and immersion (in the hustle and bustle of nature). Exchanging fast moving traffic for fast moving clouds, or chattering folk for burbling streams, or clock-driven regimes for the arc of the sun across the sky is really refreshing. The pace of life and the passage of time does not really change, but perceptions almost certainly do. ATB, Dave

I would rather live up a mountain on my own with a very small, small holding, an open fire, a tractor that comes once a month with my wood and necessities and walk every day, read by the fire, meditate into the night, and collect my eggs in the morning, and hold classes once a month on self sufficiency and small very small holding.
I would like to have a wild horse that visits, and stags and deer that could come to my out shed for shelter in the winter. If they so wanted too, that’s my perfect life. Just One Last Time.
We wait, in our minds eye, and dream the dream
To once again smell the rain, soaking our faces in an easterly breeze , as we turn to face the wind, on the sunrise.
      We long, to pace that disappearing path upwards the Corbett, and boot sinking in the brown waters of the peaty grass side;
We breath in, gladly, the remembered earthy odour of a footprint left behind, and care not for our wet socks.
We have no destination, only the journey, a view is not sort after, just the ruffling sound of our jacket in the wind, and a bead of sweat on leaving our brow, passes our eye and turns to tear; at the magic of all that passes through us, as if we were never
      ev’n here.
Resting a while on an out crop, we turn to face that long and winding way, the shimmering rising sun on the loch begins its play, of full rainbows from end to end we gaze, our footprints long gone, in the mountain hay.
We could turn to stone on the rock we perched and would neither care nor weep, nor concern, for our longing so great, for our longing fulfilled ….
And the smell of the heather
Hath gathered around us, forever to hold us in her magnificent sleep.
If per chance we were to rise, from our blissful slumber
We would form a crag, a shelter, for the happy wanderer.
Alaya Shunyata March 2023. Thank you Dave .

And then came Covid-19.... My Butty and I went past Staoineag Bothy about 30 years ago on our way to Glen Nevis YHA, stopping at Meanach Bothy, with its resident mice overnight. We had started our walk from Dalwhinnie station and had stopped overnight at Culra Lodge Bothy and at Loch Ossian YHA beforehand... That was when I was somewhat younger and fitter than I am now.. I was carrying about 60lbs in my rucksack... I distinctly remember weighing it on the scales at Abergavenny station before getting on the train for the journey up to Scotland... I also remember a guy, who rejoiced in the name of Dave walking with an enormous rucksac in the other direction on the not too steep climb up to Loch Ossian that you showed at the end of the video... he looked as if he could have done with at least a couple of Sherpas to carry it... and was completely and utterly spent... he was carrying all sorts of goodies.... tins of food, cans of drink and an huge radio/cassette player.... I have the distinct feeling it might have been his first.... and quite possibly his last ever hiking trip... I'm pretty damned sure it wasn't you, you seem far too sensible to do something as dull as that!

Yes, Chris, it is so sad to see vandalism anywhere in the world. But to carry out such a mindless act in a place where we go to escape the trials of modern life is just beyond comprehension. The hike into Staoineag is not particularly taxing, but the bothy can certainly be regarded as reasonably remote. In other words, the folk responsible for the vandalism must have hiked a considerable distance to find refuge in the bothy. During their hike, they would have experienced some of the finest mountain and moorland landscape Scotland has to offer. Despite this, they still felt some sort of perverse need to damage the character of this little building. How their minds work is beyond me. Thanks for watching and commenting, very much appreciated and I sincerely hope the graffiti didn't detract too much from your enjoyment of the video. ATB, Dave

Dave Outdoors Scotland exactly it would be such a shame as I’m sure someone somewhere probably puts a lot of effort into maintaining these Bothys. Sadly there is a Bothy in the woods at the base of the Wrekin in Shropshire and because it’s fairly urban now thanks to the growth of Telford, it’s within walking distance from the town so all of the local idiots have wrecked it ... the doors have gone, the sides are open and inside idiots have burnt all the bunks and beer cans lying all over ...it’s a real shame ..the countryside is there for everyone but in some ways some people should only be allowed in on pain of death lol 😂
