    Sad about the lack of ship combat and the Phlogiston, but I have the 2e pdf's so will have to mash these together if I ever run this.

      well there is ship combat rules spread through the book but its meant to be light and encourage narrative role play; personally I really like the simplicity and its meant to be accessible for new 5e players who know nothing of SJ

      @@polyjohn3425 What I have noticed many are disapointed on lack of combat rules to spelljamers, posible rules for how long your ship holds air.
      There was not helping tables to generate interesting random encounters or help how to run them.
      The book seem to be very fast scrach together and 3 books are barely more pages that ebberon and rime of the frost maiden had alone had.
      Seems most money goes on WotC towards the 1D&D.

    I Just bought the Spelljammer Set today!
    I'm just getting back into D&D, after nearly a 30 year break... I was really into playing and collecting 1st Edition, and 2nd Edition Books, Box Sets , Modules & Accessories.
    I had a MASSIVE collection which I seriously wish I had today!
    I got the bug to start playing again, a couple weeks ago when I ran into a group playing here where I live.
    Since then have bought the 5E Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, Monster Manual, Waterdeep Dungeon of the Mad Mage + Maps and Miscellany Accessory, Waterdeep Dragon Heist, Keys from the Golden Vault, Tyranny of Dragons (recent release, not sure the difference from the prior 2019 release), Dragonlance Shadow of the Dragon Queen, both versions of the Starter Set, the Essentials Kit, the DM Screen Reincarnated, Tyranny of Dragons DM Screen, Druid Folio (My favorite character to play), D&D Character Sheets Pack, Large older Skeleton Dragon & Bahamut Dragon, Fire Elemental many, many painted miniatures and a Multicolor selectable D&D LOGO LED light. Also several additional dice sets including Glow in the Dark dice.
    I have Volo's Guide to Monsters & Hoard of the Dragon Queen books being transferred to a local store to buy when they arrive. Now that I'm back into D&D, I hope to collect every 5E book including the new ones being released this year...
    Seeing the Spelljammer Set today really brought back some memories. The last time I played back decades ago was set in the the Spelljammer setting. Unfortunately the friend who was an awesome DM left to join the Army, and I went to join the the Air Force and spend nearly a year away in Basic, and Avionics Tech School. I ended up selling my collection, and played Magic the Gathering for awhile later..
    I look forward to creating many new memories and really want to DM my own games in the future. The D&D group that I met here has too many players to add another, but the DM is looking for more players now to start a 2nd group.
    I appreciate the time spent and effort making these videos by yourself, and the others I have watched recently. The information provided really helps an "Old Timer" like myself get up to speed on the MANY changes to the game since the early days when D&D was first launched and developed. Thank You!

    07:45 I have heard that the support for how to use/run Spelljammer ships is barren in the books. Do you disagree? You mentioned quickly that everything needed to run the ships is in there.

    • @brandonstone2754
      @brandonstone2754 2 года назад +5

      The rules are very bare. There's enough information to extrapolate and figure things out tho.
      The ships are all pretty close on gold range, unfortunately. Feels like they dropped the ball on making players want to upgrade to bigger and better ships

    • @kostasz6258
      @kostasz6258 2 года назад +1

      @@brandonstone2754 I guess they wanted to make each ship unique but not necessarily better than any other one and I kinda like that idea. Each ship has its own "quirks" (the living ship keeps the air fresh, the bombard has a big ol' cannon, etc.) so I think it's more about getting the ship that best fits to the party's needs rather than constantly upgrading to better ones.

    • @JoeStoryteller

      I played SJ 2e and been DM for over 2 decades. Those rules were dense; this new rules set is everything that fits the 5e design philosophy. I am perfectly happy with a more bare bones streamline rules system.

    Bro you definitely didn't read the book. This is one of the most hollow cash grabs that WotC has ever done. Book essentially is $50 that repeats, "Figure it out, do whatever, we don't have any guidance on it."

    • @brandonstone2754
      @brandonstone2754 2 года назад +1

      It is a little light on rules yes. There's enough information there to extrapolate anything you need though.
      My main gripe is the ships are all close in gold cost. There isn't tiers and incentive to upgrade to bigger and better ships.
      The adventure is amazing. 11 sessions at 2-3 hours each and its hilarious. Spoiler free but even failing is fantastic
      The content to value is fantastic tho, absolutely no complaints there. But I play warhammer and am used to paying 50 bucks for 5 cents of plastic

      @@brandonstone2754 just looked at my pdf, and all of the ship interiors that were around in the 80's were literally just scanned and reprinted from the 2e Box set. In fact going through the 2e box set is like night and day in terms of the content(any at all in some cases like the 5 full pages on creating your own system), all the while adjusting for inflation the 5e box set is still more expensive than what people were paying for back then in 89'

    Picking racial bonuses isn't good. That ruins the pros and cons of specific races.

    • @polyjohn3425
      @polyjohn3425 2 года назад +6

      I've been playing without racial ASI's for years. Other racial features are still the same, but players can put a +2 and a +1 wherever they want. Makes for much more freedom when making characters and hasn't dissuaded anyone from choosing races, either core or more exotic.

      Darkvision isn’t important? Teleportation isn’t a pro or con? A flipping fly speed isn’t a pro or con????

    • @nicka3697
      @nicka3697 2 года назад +3

      I like the way they're proposing to do it in the next version of the ruleset where the bonuses are linked to your background rather than race. It seems to me if you are a Halfling who has spent years working in a library your bonuses would be in intelligence and wisdom not dexterity and charisma. There is enough else to separate the races especially in spelljammer where an ooze person and a four armed psychic insectoid are very very different thematically and mechanically.

    • @HankHill11
      @HankHill11 2 года назад +1

      racial bonuses are tied to background now, makes way more sense, if you want to play with racial bonuses than go right ahead, but your gonna need a few other players who agree with you

    • @jakesmith4079
      @jakesmith4079 2 года назад +1

      Having an "out of the ordinary character" is fine, you ask the DM if your racial bonuses can be different. It's actually already in the rules but I guess people don't actually read the Dungeon Masters Guide.
