A trick I learned about writing lyrics is to take a topic and then writing down words that are related to this topic (5-15 words). Then I try to write about this topic but without using any of the words. For example: Writing about space, and I cannot use the words: black hole, far, stars, silence.

Just want to drop in one more lyric writing 'trick' for getting started, and this is really helpful for getting something going when you just feel blocked in general. Pick any song you like, anything at all. Write new lyrics for it. Then write new music for the lyrics you just wrote. I don't know why, but when I do this I have a much easier time STARTING the lyrics, then I usually only get a few lines into it before my own ideas for the music start to come in, and then, well, that's it. Just keep following yourself down that rabbit hole. The lyrics can sometimes follow the cadence of the original at first, but I find once I start incorporating ideas for the music, the lyrical cadence kind of naturally changes as well. The end result is completely unrecognizable from the song I started with.

For me personally, being a drummer, I've always started to compose songs with a cool drum beat or one I have stuck in my head! It is a bit tricky to develop a proper melody on top, but I usually continue with the bass line.
Love the use of random numbers for picking chord progressions and such. I rely a lot on constrained randomness and it's been huge help. Glad to see I'm not alone in this!
Definitely not. Out of curiosity, what methods do you use to incorporate constrained randomness to your music? Like random number generators, or something more complex?
Andrew, you're such a massive inspiration to me, as I'm trying to figure out how to do music more seriously and professionally (and also maybe get somewhere with RUclips)! And I love videos like this because even after doing this for a while it's still often so hard to start songs. The songs you started in this video are all so cool and I especially love that last one (I relate to those lyrics a lot).
What I find easiest and most reliable is to just hum or beatbox into a voice recorder for a few minutes, or into a series of clips on a Push or Force. This gives me a skeleton to build a song around, and it guarantees I won't get stuck in a one-pattern loop.
Andrew, this blew my mind 🤯. I took your course (which is amazing) two years ago, but there are a LOT of new ideas in this video. Thank you for giving us new sources of inspiration

Tbh I think the project with the mug lid needs to be finished and released. It might be one of the best things I've ever heard in my life.
This is really fascinating. I love this kind of content. Thank you for letting us see your creative process. Interesting approaches. My fave track was the one starting from chords. Just D and A and suddenly such a vibe, the melody naturally comes out of you... So cool.

Holy smokes the guitartone in the drumming intro bit!
You inspire me to complete tracks. Often times i get caught up in never finishing things but your videos always remind me that the first step is just getting somthing down.
jesus christ dude you are beyond talented. i look up to you alot :D
For me personally, being a drummer, I've always started to compose songs with a cool drum beat or one I have stuck in my head! It is a bit tricky to develop a proper melody on top, but I usually continue with the bass line.
While being a father at the same time 11:46 . powerful man!
And this ideo is absolutely 🔥. Thank you so much. Has made me much confident making music
Those headphones are exactly what I needed!
What I find easiest and most reliable is to just hum or beatbox into a voice recorder for a few minutes, or into a series of clips on a Push or Force. This gives me a skeleton to build a song around, and it guarantees I won't get stuck in a one-pattern loop.
The amount of likes is OVER 9000! But seriously, Andrew, have a fantastic day! Thanks for this awesome video! Cheers from Sweden. ♥
Andrew, this blew my mind 🤯. I took your course (which is amazing) two years ago, but there are a LOT of new ideas in this video. Thank you for giving us new sources of inspiration
Andrew, when I was a kid I used to be really impressed with how amazing you were at music, now that I am an adult and have gotten 1 million times better, you still impress me, maybe even more than before, you're actually insane
hahahaha
andrew: “goodbye ceiling, hello clouds”
me: aw that’s perfect! i bet he’s gonna pick that one and make something super joyful and uplifting-
andrew: yeah not all of them are winners
me: … );
it's a really evocative concept - the first place my brain goes this morning is that 2021 mood of staring at the ceiling wishing you weren't at home? there's places you could go with it.
Same 😂
Exact same feeling I had!
listen... he don't want it... take it. :P
my thoughts exactly!!!
I came here to learn how to start a song but I ended up replaying the songs multiple times because it's so ASDLKJFHLSKJAFH AMAZING and I momentarily forgot what I was here for.
The song you got from the coffee mug blew my mind. Such an interesting sound and transformation. I need to learn to do that!
Bro... the frist guitar bit with the drum kit beat... absolutely SHREDDING it!!! 😳👏
the moment i heard the tightened tea cup cover at 90 bpm i knew it was gonna be the best one out of the bunch 😂😂helll naaahhhhh 🔥🔥🔥🔥
You are so insanely skilled! My favorite, by far, was The Sound song. Love how that one came together!
I bought your Book of Chances through a friend's recommendation. I bought Transit through Warren Huart's plugin review. This is my first video of yours which I watched and it really was superb. Great content, great production with inspiring ideas and some killer music. I'm a new fan - thanks for all the help with developing my (expensive) hobby!
Oh man, producing music among babies is hard. I’ve done it 3 times. Your level of video production (and music production) is still amazing, I don’t know how you find the time! My own children are bigger now, much more self-sufficient. They’re also developing great music skills so we all speak the same language. Parenthood is a wonderful thing, amazingly hard but incredibly rewarding. I hope you’re finding time to enjoy it too!
I'm sharing this video with my kids...!
@@mikeciul8599 good idea, these are great tips. Andrew’s energy and enthusiasm is as inspiring as the topic. Also his honesty and editing skills, it’s easy to see why his channel is so huge!
I need like, ALL of these songs - but especially the one around 1:20 that you posted on insta. OMG that has a VIBE
Yo that guitar tone that you used over the drums for the first example was gnarly, I would be super interested in a video about how you get that tone and the kind of toe you have on sparkle mountain. Anyways, great video as always! Your quality is always bar none, keep up the great work!
Edit: The more I watch this video the more it becomes one of my favorite from you.
I love the last one you made by starting with Lyrics !
all the songs in the video should be one album, really great stuff, love it

I'm confident enough with my own processes that I don't usually get much out of production videos, but I really like the word ladder idea
This was really timely. I've been trying to get into writing my own songs but always have heard "start with drums" and drums are easily the thing I'm worst at. These other ways of approaching the problem give me some hope that I'm not doomed! XD
the cutest thing seeing him groove with his baby 11:20
The editing has only leveled up since the last time I watched you! Amazing as always Andrew!

LOVE the sustainability aspect of the sponsor. I currently need to replace a couple pairs of headphones for one off parts that I wish I could more easily replace
This might be the most inspirational/motivational video on music production i’ve ever seen. Thank you🙏🏼
agreed!
Brother, PLEASE finish these songs! I got goosebumps from these. I'm going to check out this video every time I experience writers block.
Great tips!!! Even as a seasoned musician it's good since there are a couple of things that normally we skip and get us lost in the creative process!
Thank you! Cheers for LilHuang as well!
This is honestly one of the best videos you've ever put out.
Not only is it just a super informative and inspiring watch, but it's also a testament to who you are as a musician and legendary internet personality, plus it's edited ridiculously well.
Great work, Andrew
I find it easiest to start a song idea with a guitar part, but I actually record bass as the second or third thing I do to the song. Although bass Is often low in the mix, I think it helps to record bass pretty early on, it helps to centre everything in the song around a bassline.

All those songs sound just amazing. If I had to chose a favorite one, it would be the rap song, this one was just perfect.
I'm an extremley ametuer writer, and while i could write something up with ambition alone thise exercise seems like it can actually challenge you and force you to be creative during the process. I would love to see more writing exercised that can challenge the writing process, Great video.
4:45 i would add: whatever you want "I'll do" (for emphasis with the lyrics from before)
Andrew, long time watcher here, this is most def one of your most inspirational videos. Awesome job 👌
This video was AMAZING! I'm blown away by how much work you did so fast! You also dropped some REALLY great tips for songwriting that I'm definitely going to adopt. I also almost cried when I saw you front-packing the baby making beats. I'm a mom of 3 little ones still trying to make music and balance family life and that moment was huge for me.
The last song definitely would be on my spotify! The vibes!
I'm not a music producer, but i watch your videos for the sheer quality and genius. 🤯 Outstanding.
I usually just go with whatever I hear in my head first, which is usually some thematic line, then I build on from there. I find it best to not have a set process for writing music. If you're constantly humming a tune, start there. Make what attracts you to listen to it over and over. From your "running through the dirt" -
I've been running through the dirt
trying to catch up to you
You dropped your shirt on the way out
I never doubted you, I can't believe
I didn't see you leave.
Man, I love the RTJ style song at 11:15! What a banger!
Listening to your pieces gives me goosebumps 99% of time. You're like the next Timbo (but better?!)
thank you Andrew, such a good teacher 🙏🏼
11:09 needs to be released as it's own song
Soo sweet of you mann!!💗
Thank you for thiss wonderful content & ur efforts behind it!❤️🔥
Lyrics are a HUGE struggle for me so I really like that word writing exercise and some of the things talked about; definitely gonna try and implement that into my writing process
Highly recommend taking a favorite movie quote and creating a song based off of that! It really helped me!
@@mayksounds Oh that's an interesting idea; I haven't thought of that as a starting point! I like it, thank you!
Starting with a brief has been a game changer for me. Write your own brief first. Then execute.
I loved this! I’m prepping to try and record a full album soon, and the part about the lyrics was spot on! I have over 100 notes with little snippets like that!
Edit: And yes, can confirm - they’re not all winners, I appreciate that you included that 😂
wow that sound-rap is lit af! 🔥🔥🔥
I'm writing a metal soundtrack for a game right now (first time writing a metal soundtrack) and I literally used a random number generator (3:04) last week to generate ideas for riffs. That's awesome seeing Andrew show that lol.
what game
Thanks for always sparking inspiration.
Reversed intro always works
