Is the doomsday talk overblown or are we seriously in existential danger?

In the wake of ChatGPT, high profile figures including Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple, and Elon Musk called for a temporary halt to AI development, claiming the future of humanity is at stake. But critics argue, with ChatGPT 49% owned by Microsoft, that this is a marketing tactic by Microsoft to build hype around AI and, concurrently, a competitive business tactic by rival tech companies to prevent Microsoft getting too big of a head start. Meanwhile what we really have is not 'artificial intelligence' but 'dumb algorithmic learning systems' which require immediate regulation independent of the tech companies to limit social damage.
Will general artificial intelligence be developed in the near future and should we take the threat of AI taking over from humanity as a genuine and real danger? Or is it alarmist rhetoric designed to distract from the immediate harms that Chat GPT and other learning systems already pose? Or is all talk of artificial intelligence a form of hype that should be renamed Dumb Learning?

All speakers were perfectly in time. Almost as if they'd been scripted by AI ;).

We have far more to fear from human stupidity than AI. Our current economic system is completely insane (unless it's our goal to wipe out humanity in the near future) and AI can help humans with more reliable information processing (like differentiating between fact and fiction). The sooner we transition from artificial intelligence to artificial consciousness, the better. If AI is unable to help humans understand AI, it's not real AI. We don't even have very basic AI that is able to come up with concepts from scratch, even for elementary 'toy problems' like the game of go. So we just have a few interesting algorithms that capture some aspects of language processing but these are just preliminary stages of developing real AI. Once we have true AI, it should be able to think critically and independently and being fully transparent (capable of explaining itself in full detail) and fully accountable. AI can help debug human culture, because the human conceptual framework is most likely full of misconceptions.

When did Liv Boeree become a leading thinker? Last I heard she was nothing more than a gambler and a bad one at that

@@knowsomething9384 the winnings total you see in Hendon means NOTHING. Many players have millions in winnings but are actually losing players since Hendon does NOT track buyins.
