How Mechless Eggman Works in Sonic the Fighters

- The "no mech" variant of Eggman in Sonic the Fighters has only recently been made playable online through a fan-made patch that rescues him from the dustbin of history. While existing in the game's code for over twenty years, this marks the character's first chance to interact with the game's competitive metagame, and well, he's probably not great. Still, I think this character has some potential, and in this video, I outline why he can still hang despite some glaring shortcomings.

Honestly seeing eggman finally decide to not fuck around and just pummel the sonic crew himself is a hard ass image.
He also canonically could seriously he's like really strong in the comics able to beat the hell out of a super powered Starline (a guy from the comics) literally slamming him from side to side the only reason he doesn't is because he wants to beat sonic using his brains not his brawn (also sorry for the essay)
@@jellykirby2278 No need to be sorry, you are absolutely correct. In the games (the closest thing to "canon" as Sonic gets) Dr. Eggman has not only superhuman strength but speed as well. In an emergency, he can briefly outrun (a probably tired) Sonic at the end of the Genesis games and make good his escape. He doesn't always escape though and has proven he can survive explosions IN SPACE. In Sonic Adventure 2 he can lift himself and his mech walker with one hand, effortlessly. In the riders games he is listed as a power class character and can one handedly punch cars and even parked trains away

Honestly? This playstyle suits Eggman.
Eggman isn't a Mobian, he is a basic dude with high intelligence.
His weight can slow him down and make him easy to hit... However, if this dude hits YOU then you're getting messed up.
He's easy to hit and dodge, but also heavily punishing if he DOES catch you.
All that's missing is Eggman pulling out a fucking glock like he does in those comics.

I love how the characters squash and stretch in the game like they are going full loony tunes
People often forget how strong eggman is in cannon. Not only is he already larger and stronger than the average man, but he's that in a world full of people that are 3ft tall. He could canonically throw hands like this if he wanted, he just prefers to use brain over brawn.
you can make him throw hands with the Chao in SA2 :D
He is able to break ice with his bare hands in SlW and break cameras in sonic X (probably not conon)

So cool seeing Eggman as a character as my first experience was on Sonic Gems Collection. I wasn't sure if Eggman or Metal Sonic were unlockable characters as I always lost my perfect getting to the final fight.

hello wusstunes from the very popular and awesome youtube channel wusstunes I have a question; did any balancing happen after that first tournament with legman and metal sonic and mechman?
There were some changes to metal. He’s still kind of banned but less absurd, laser is nerfed and no longer causes hyper. His dive attack is worse now too.
I think Mechman got some partial buffs so he can still utilize some of the hitstun cheese he has in vanilla and can use drill claw without it taking half a second to come out. There should be full patch notes on the discord. I was really busy with bowser stuff when 1.6 came out so I didn’t cover it as close as I could’ve!

Running a tournament only to play a character that's one of the posterchildren of video game bosses and fight the winner is genius and you absolutely need to ham it up as a villain whenever you do this.

I don't even remember regular eggman being playable, but that could just be me not getting through the arcade mode.
He isn't playable normally. I think it is just a model which was programed with moves found within the game.

I don’t think people know how strong he (eggman) is. With his agility (as demonstrated in sonic 2) he could easily utilize Mike Tyson’s peekaboo style, slipping and rolling other fighter’s attacks.

Discovered this game before Combo Breaker 2024 and I'm tempted to get into it, seeing a low tier like this only makes me more tempted...

Ok, seems like he's not necessarily dogass, but due to having only one option in most situations, it feels like there's little room for self expression.
BTW, does community edition let me mute the ring sound effect that happens on every hit?
Kind of? He still has some decent universal moves like horse kick, and even if his sidestep punch is his best tool, you can do a lot of things afterwards. It’s a basic mix, but it’s a mix. I think there is a build without ring sounds actually now.

Wrong. Bean has a triple bomb throw, an aerial bomb throw and a bomb kick. He does not have a grounded single bomb throw.

They were already in the game; they just got nerfs in order to be more appropriate competitively. Right now Metal Is still generally banned. Mech eggman is getting some play, but he’s not super popular. He’s just very jank but without ten frame jab for ten frame 6p he’s not as strong of a chumpcheck.

I run those 2 files once in RPCS3. Now there is a mysterious new folder in C:\RPCS3\dev_hdd0\game called NPUB30927. It sounds an awful lot like what those people are talking about in the community edition instructions.
Perhaps it has something to do with that. Who knows, Sonic the Fighters might not just be 2 files after all.
It’s not very intuitive. If you ask people on the discord they are eager to help, though, and there are now a couple methods to do it.

I think it’s just because his human legs are exposed instead of compressed into his mech. Not sure why or how it caught on but it’s fun to say.
