her wearing a wig actually makes sense. Showing that perhaps since she hates herself so much, she tries to become and live as another person. Also gives a simile to the fairy creatures; who also transform themselves but literally achieve it, and want to become something else.

Don't turn your back to the glass: They can't see your face, thus they cannot mimic you.
Don't go near the burrows: Death? They lived down there, so going in kept you out of the light. You'd die.
Opening the door after sunset: Same as above. You are out of the light, thus you will die.
The rules were there to keep them "safe". Mina broke the rules because she was at a point in her life where she didn't care or was very brave, but she was extremely curious as well and wanted to know what the hell was going on. She wanted to leave too, so she broke the rules to figure it out. If she hadn't broken them, they would all be there still and they would have never found the hatch to the bunker below. I really enjoyed it. The ending when Madeline was in the house before the one character came home was surprising. I knew something was up with Madeline and I assumed she was one of them. I figured she was there to give them rules, so they would stay and the Watchers could observe them until the end. I thought she was in on it the whole time. Super fun movie in my opinion. Good to see Dakota Fanning back on screen.

The rules weren't pointless at all. The rules were put in place by the halfling to keep the people safe so she could escape eventually. The watchers didn't like the halfling cause she was different so she also needed to be protected from the full watchers, so the rules were to keep the humans alive, and to keep them away from getting killed from the watchers in the holes. Don't open the door is pretty self explanitory, and face the mirror is to keep the watchers satisfied to study them. So the rules were simple and made sense and the not going to far into the woods obviously made sense cause the professor had it mapped out. So I'm not sure what you mean at all by they were pointless. That is actually kind of a dumb statement. The rules aren't just there to be if you break them you get punished, the rules are there to keep the people safe. When she went in the whole she almost got taken but she was in the light enough. When they were locked outside they were able to hide and get back in, but had the watchers found them they would have both been killed. So it's not like instant death, but again every time the rules were broken you were shown why the rules were made, and then when you find out she's a halfling at the end the rules actually make more sense, that she created the fules and she knows what they are and how to stay somewhat safe, until they figure out a way out.

They sound like a group of angels that are literally called 'watchers' as well. According to the Book of Enoch, there were angels called "Watcher" angels that were told by God to keep watch over humanity. They did so for a small while, taking care of them, keeping them out of trouble and even living in harmony with them. But than the Watcher angels started to lust after humans, they accepted forms of worship from humanity and gave them the tools to make war. God destroyed both humanity and the watcher angels and their offspring called "Nephilim" with a great flood.

I just knew one of them was gonna be the changeling. My first suspect was the old lady after she told her first time meeting one and taking her form and she knew just what they wanted them to do. And also the scene where she explained about changlings mating with humans (Though there were some scenes to throw you off) And the second, the protagonist after recalling how she liked to change her appearance to meet guys in bars and her fondness for the caged bird (like how the watcher liked watching the humans and maybe she didn't know she was changling). Some parts were really stupid though, i would have found the bunker within hours out of boredom. And who and how the hell even built that bunker, and where were the changlings when they were building it? The old lady even said she went there by choice so why didn't they even think of questioning her after they found the bunker? The glass didn't even make sense as they seemed to easily crack it when they tried so how did the professor even manage to study them from inside that? And also like you said, how did that bird became a gps?
Maybe it's just me but I just couldn't ignore those missing details and mixing in fantasy with the horror was so weird. Visually stunning though and the irony of the watchers and the ones being watched was funny but

So would the changlings also kill Madeline because she was a halfling? That’s why she had to follow the same rules with the others until they could help her find a way out of the forest? But at the end of the movie she’s flies, so couldn’t she have just flown away during the day? Or did she need to steal Nina’s identify so she could have a life? The other bit I didn’t get was why did Madeline tell them that the changelings looked like her, she didn’t have to tell them that hmm

Madeline said somewhere that she was an outcast to the rest of the changlings because she was a halfling (but didn’t know it yet) so it’s possible they would have killed her.
Or she was just blending in and it was her human side that wanted to stay and protect the people there, as the montage shows at the end that she was loving and protective.
At the end, she only got wings when she embraced her loving and caring side. The original fae were like that, and lost them when they were forced underground and developed bitterness towards humans. so when she let go of hatred for humans etc, she got wings like the ancient fae had.

Well mads said in the movie he stayed by their sides to observe them much closer and better. (And just wanted to protect them as much as possible from her kind by giving them the rules she made, stalling her kind to not kill the humans and her while blending in with the humans.)
The wing reveal scene, she got her wings because of her change of heart? Not 100% sure she'll be a good person now. But the ending seems like she's still watching over mina. I'M VERY CURIOUS IF THE WOUND MARK has something to do with both of them. Like a blood bond or curse mark where she can always track her anywhere...

  • @honeycherries6803
    @honeycherries6803 4 месяца назад +2

I think since they are changelings, the reason why they should never show their backs is so that they can never copy them completely.
In our local mythology that is similar to this, they would make their victims get lost in the woods and they would assume their place amongst your family. The missing person then would either turn into one of the trees or was already slaughtered by the doppelganger. To counter this, it is said that you should always wear your shirt inside out to prevent them from copying you completely so you can safely leave the forest
and i feel like it is somewhat the same in this movie except they chose the 'not showing your back' since it might been based on a different mythology

Idk why but the rules made sense. 1. Don’t turn you back which mean because the watchers couldn’t replicate or study the human properly if your back was turned, it’s like a painter is painting they can’t paint who you are if your back is turned. 2. Don’t go near the burrows the fairies want to get to know u and replicate you, but they don’t want you to know where they live and what they look like or how they are in prison or secrets . 3.dont open the door. I’m thinking is because there nature was to kill if they killed every human that came through the forest they would get nowhere. But idk that what I got from it.staying in the light reminds me of vampire they can’t adapt to it. Maybe it burns them or weakens them.

How did they stay all clean looking, with perfect hairdos? I didn't see a washer and dryer in the Coop. They lived in there for a year and no one moved the rug? It took them that long to realize that they were above a bunker?
The movie made no sense, the dialogue only existed for exposition. Dakota is the only decent actress in the movie, but the script gave her no depth.
    M. Night's nepo daughter didn't have to make her first movie in the same genre as her father, but she did. That leads me to wonder if dad did more than just produce. And that is a real problem. There are directors who have to work for years in the industry before getting their first directorial gig. Quentin Tarantino comes to mind. i think the caged bird was like the girl, but without causing accidents. When she had the car accident that killed her mother, she was wearing yellow dress and mimicking like the bird. The bird was used the way the mice are used in a sinking ship.. or like the bird in Noah's arc to find the land of freedom.. instinctively they know how to survive. The birds also know when to fly and leave from a place and where to travel. The story connected nicely the fairies legends, with the angels and demons myths and the shapeshifter creatures. i think the watchers are mentioned in the book of Enoch as Nephilim. The angels also lost their wings and fell in love with human and got banished by god and human, because the fallen angels tried to enslave human and wanted to be worshiped like gods. The movie is pretty smart actually. but those who don't know about apocrypha books they will not understand it. Burying them in the underground world, worked like hell or hades or like Tartarus titan's punishment..

"The Watchers" is the debut feature of Ishana Night Shyamalan, daughter of director M. Night Shyamalan who is one of the film's producers. Ishana herself wrote the script based on the novel of the same name by A. M. Shine, achieving an interesting story that revolves around folk horror and a dark fairy tale, in addition to doing a great job as a director. The cast gives good performances, Dakota Fanning performs a magnificent role, Georgina Campbell plays a tender role with mastery and Olwen Fouéré demonstrates once again her histrionic ability and her Scream Queen skills. The cinematography work is top-notch, managing to capture a gloomy atmosphere in the filming locations. The soundtrack composed of traditional Irish bagpipes is effective for the story. "The Watchers" is a great film that plays with horror and fantasy.

I thought that it was gonna turn out that Mina, Ciara, and Daniel were actually in a psych ward and that their traumas were making them crazy and hallucinate a forest. I thought that the “Professor” was the psych ward creator watching their progress in rehabilitation. I knew Madeline was different cause she knew way too much, I didn’t think she would be a halfling, but more a doctor keeping them from going crazy in the ward. My theory was very off but interesting.
Edit: I also thought this because Mina saw her sister when they were children in the same outfit as when her mom died. I thought that she was hallucinating because the watchers had never seen her sister especially as a young child so I didn’t think the watchers would know how to become her.

Since ciara is alone, her husband no longer with her. If shes a changeling, wouldnt she want to change into Lucy as Mina's estranged sister to not be lonely anymore?

The movie worked best at the beginning when the main character found herself trapped together with others in the forest and we didn't know the reason, though the basic premise was far from new and remined me of the Maze Runner and also the numerous "evil forest" movies. But then the movie tried to over-explain things at the end, and as you said the stories about the faeries and the numerous "rules" were never made clear. I never really understood how the humans managed to "banish" the faeries in the woods since those changelings and even half-lings seemed so powerful (they could change into any human and can even fly). Overall, this seemed to be bits and bits of different movies or genres mixed together. There were too many side-plots and subplots that were inconsequential or never followed up. As just one example, what was the point of Dakota's twin sister (who suddenly appeared at the end) and their backstory of their mother's death? It was not a bad movie, but nothing to get excited about either.

come on, they are not fairies but the WATCHER ANGELS! They call them fairies in the film, but there are many parts in the film that clearly refer to angels.
of course Hollywood doesn't like it when the plot revolves around angels and God's existence.
    (SPOILER)
for example, these creatures corrupted humanity, but it is always said that they only made people strong...
they mated with human women and fathered giants.
GOD instructed his archangels to punish the WATCHERs of heaven very severely by crushing them forever deep in the earth under rocks and stones and no longer being able to see the light.
twist the truth a little and it works...
there is supposed to be a book about this film. if the book describes the plot of the film like this, the author has based it on the story of the WATCHERs and changed a few things

Americans can relate to breaking the rules immediately. So that part makes sense to us lol. Maybe if your from a place that makes the rules for most of the last 1,000 years you see things differently

i think it was a great movie tbh one of the best thrillers of 2024 it's the story behind it that makes it great

Thought it was great up until they lost me at fairies. Would’ve been better if they just kept it as random monsters or something other than fairies. Corny

I loved it. Strangely, Mina needed that nightmarish episode in order to forgive herself and move on.

This movie was decent but my god that last part ruined it for me. Like the movie went hey audience if dont know still lets explain it all over and drag this out so you get it.
It had 2 good areas to cut and leave questions. 1 should cut after the escape with maybe a hint she was one of them. 2 end when fannings character saw and image of her.
