      I think in the context of his choppy english he thought they were not Japanese and therefore could speak english for some reason.

      To a Japanese speaker that may sound fine. But too people who speak English English natively it sounds like a Japanese guy speaking poor English.
      To the Japanese audience, it may sound fine. Which I guess is good enough for the studio.

      I've actually heard of instances where Japanese people try speaking English with tourists but have trouble understanding them. But then the tourist would try speaking English with a Japanese accent and they can understand it much easier. 😆

      Waste of time and money when you have a limited budget and time to produce the anime. Anime studios are on a tight schedule and tourists generally don't have the right to earn money while in Japan if they don't have the right kind of visa. (theoretically)

      ​@@robbyducey Depends on which country you are from. Australia and Japan have a working holiday agreement going that lets applicants work in each other's country for a year. America and a lot of other countries don't have any agreement like that, so immigrants have to apply for a work visa like everyone else.

The joke from the series is that she has been living in Japan for some years and she forgot how to speak english, so when the foreign sees her he assumes she is a foreign too and naturally she speaks english.

      I'm mixed race Japanese. Gotta agree with HiddenRealm. The joke in this scene is the fact that she has blonde hair and blue eyes. That even explains why the foreigner says "oh, you're not Japanese!" In the mind of a Japanese person, he would only assume that because she has blonde hair and blue eyes.

      The "You're welcome" sounded awkward, but was clearly enunciated. The biggest tell was pronouncing 'cute' as if it were two syllables. No native English speaker would do that.

      As a foreigner in Japan, Japanese people literally think it's pronounced "o mai ga!" even though they could easily say "o mai goddo!" which is much closer.

      I think it’s because most English speakers in Japan are tourists… though Americans are also stubborn and a lot of us would try to find the Johoku Library on our own without having to ask for directions
      Another thing is that broadly Westerners tend to be more outgoing and willing to strike up a conversation with a stranger on the street, and this plays into Japanese social anxieties

    i went to japan for a month last december. literally everyone i spoke to from middle schoolers to hotel workers and...other places that i don't care to mention at least spoke a little english. No lolicon i just asked some middle schoolers for directions. they at least knew enough to comunicate, although i did try my hardest to speak nihongo at every possible moment.

Using US data plans in japan costs a lot of money. even with asking directions at every point possible, I still had a $400 phone bill after coming back. I do acknowldge that the girls were cute, but that is completely besides the point. I did do some...things i'm not proud of while there, but I'd never lay a hand on someone underage.

      @@Quitobito do i really have to explain? fine. when i was in tokyo i met a girl in akihabara. It sounds like the most cliche thing ever but we were both at a manga store and reached for the same manga and our hands touched. We had a late lunch at a cafe together, and hung out the rest of the day. She gave me her number and for the remaining six days I was there she showed me places that were still open even during the new years. We went to hatsumode (a shinto new years ceremony) together and after the 108th bell rang she kissed me. On the last day i was in Tokyo, we went to a love hotel and...did the deed. That's what i'm not proud of, that i gave my first time to a girl I'll likely never see again.

    Ah, Strawberry Marshmallow, I remember this. Has a superlative English dub featuring actual child voice actors for the young characters, although the Encore OVAs didn't get the same treatment for some reason... come to think of it, I don't think I've ever watched said OVAs even as of late.
    Perhaps I'll try a rewatch with the original Japanese then... oh, and the idea of foreign young 'uns being so acclimatized to their new home country that they forgot their mother tongue isn't farfetched either. Had two close acquaintances back in the day who spoke Filipino fluently... and yet only remembered some slivers of English and had to relearn it by scratch when they came along to my hometown from days long past, and this is despite them being born British, of all things.

      i didnt watch this anime, but just for the context it seems that girl is called anna and she's 11 year old that came from UK 5 years before the story, therefore she moved when she was 6, kids likely to forget their prior language in that early age.

      @@ElliotKeaton I hate that mindset. If you're child is 5, and you want them to learn Japanese. Litterally do nothing. They're young enough to learn it on their own. If you speak your own language with your child, the child will speak 2 languages. It's a win-win
