I am a long haul truck driver, been using one of these for years , for a little more evan cooking roll tin foil up into a long snake, then form it into a circle ,put it up under your tin, or put about a 1/2" of water in the bottom of your oven will help control temp.Last Thanksgiving i evan made a turkey breast for dinner, pork roast /tenderloin also works well. love your channel.
Great review. I tend to only use mine while I am driving. I use two pieces of tin foil, each crunched up into the shape of a hot dog and place them under the pan creating a small gap between the bottom of the oven and the pan. It really helps to eliminate any hot spots that will occur and burn the bottom of things. Thanks for sharing and safe travels my friend. 👍🚐🇺🇸
If you're going to be driving for about 3 hours, throw in chicken quarters (leg attached to thigh) and thinly sliced potatoes and carrots and seasoning. By the time you get where you're sleeping for the night it's ready and didn't use any battery. Meatloaf too.
This oven only heats up to 300 degrees F so naturally it is going to take longer to cook things that suggest higher temps. Overall, I think it worked great. Thanks for the tip. Oh, and to test the cornbread to see if it is done, stick a toothpick or fork in it and if they come out dry, the cornbread is done.
Been nomading for over a year now and have tried everything to try and keep things simple (no cleanup basically). I've had a butane stove and it was good, but all the pots, pans, and cleaning just wasn't practical. Eventually I came to realize that the RoadPro was really the way to go. Sure, you can't cook everything like a stove can,and it takes longer to cook whatever you wish to prepare, but it's simply awesome for when I want a hot meal in any weather and no cleanup when it's finished. I use it on the Jackery 500 and with most meals taking about 45-50 minutes it only drains 18%-22% of the battery if not being charged by panel.
Thanks. I enjoyed your review. What sold me was that you could be cooking other things and have this cooking dessert. I also like the cook while you drive aspect. I'm big on oven baking and roasting, so this might be a goo addition. Feel free to go foodie on me if you feel like it. Cooking in a van will be one of my topics when I start on the road.
I have used the little oven to bake a meatloaf going down the road, also used a small "Reynalds cooking bag" & put pot roast & veges in. I've even put a small frozen lasagna or other frozen meal. It's good to have a hot meal cooked when you get to your location with minimal cleanup. I do sit mine down in the sink as we are going down the road for safety.
Hi I bought one also and it is so slow cooking everything that I don't use it that often but I keep it for emergencies. Thank you for showing it to us. Take care. God bless.
I was thinking of using my toaster oven, which I already use a lot, instead of the stove, as it doens't heat up the kitchen much, requires less energy and cooks faster. I havne't checked the voltage yet.
Thumbs~Up.for another great cooking segment, Brian, and THANKS for making the rest of us hungry for hot cornbread, while watching your vlog:) That little electric "oven" looks fun to use, and I also saw Bob Wells use it to make some delish chocolate chip cookies. Hey Brian I have had a RoadPro LunchBox Oven for over two years myself but have never used it yet. So this inspires me to get it out of my storage into my mini van. Thanks ! Take care. Thumbs up. Shared it also. ENJOY....THE SIMPLE LIFE
You should try putting a couple of little dowels under the tray to lift the baking tin off the bottom and allow the heat to circulate (like a trivet). It will always take longer than the instructions if oven is lower temp and not pre-heated before adding food.
this is tasty cornbread a friend turned me on to.... add finely chopped onion and green pepper to that mix and ohhh you will never go back to plain cornbread again!! Enjoyed the demo.
Used one of these driving cross country in my 2009 VW Sportwagen. Defrosted and heated up wraps I had frozen at home. Did it quickly...loved it. I also lined it with a foil pan to avoid a mess.
I had one years ago to use at work. I had no success with it but I think that's because I did not realize I needed to double the cooking time. Dinner looked good.
I've carried one when I was a owner operator truck driver and would buy the cheapest steak and put it in at noon and by supper time it was just as tender as could be.
Hey Brian,I have one of the RoadPro ovens too and they are really great. I sometimes use a slow cooking Hot Logic Mini in tandem with the RoadPro so as to have a fast cooker and a slow cooker (time synched of course) to make pretty much any kind of meal/dessert. Also, they will both run on the Jackery 500 at the same time which makes cooking inside or outside really awesome. Keep up the great videos Brian, and God Speed......

Oh wow! That corn bread with the chili...yum!! Such a cool little oven! I love when you add those great tips (lining the tin with tin foil)...not everyone does that...they just seem to skip over those important details..totally appreciate the simple ways to save money and try to reuse if possible....Excellent!!
Hey Brian nice vids!! In the summer a cast iron pan with a lid can be a great solar oven as well>Put a pan on the hood of the van or a park bench when in full sun and do some baking outside.
I'm a home health nurse and I have used it while driving. I don't like to leave it alone in the car while I'm in a patient's home, so usually use it while driving. Just make sure it doesn't turn over! Lol Takes 30 min or so to heat up soup or leftover lasagna, spaghetti, chili, etc.
I've seen this item demonstrated before. It seems like a useful tool to be used as an addition to whatever your normal set-up may be for Van cooking. I like it.
Just a tip; pour your can of chili on the bottom of greased pan, then pour your cornbread batter on top. Optional additions; can of creamed corn, shredded cheese, sour cream, green chiles, etc to your cornbread batter. Chili Cornbread Casserole :)
The secret to amazing cornbread is to put a handful of whole kernel corn in the mix. I've heard of people using creme corn (in lieu of the liquid), but I haven't tried that one.
a small pressure cooker is the best, I've made brownies, cakes and cheese cake in a pressure cooker. Nice thing is once the food is about half done you take the PC off the heat and let the pressure naturally cook on it's own for 25 minutes or so. Free heat for cooking. Great electric ones but stove top pressure cookers have been around for 100 years.
Looks yummy. Thanks for the review! I like to throw some taco meat on top of the cornbread batter before I put it in the oven. Delish. Will try it with the RoadPro.
I've heard they get up to about 350F The top of the cooker is not heated so yes, I can take twice as long to cook something. With baked items, they brown on the bottom and not the top, and I guess if one was bothered by that and depending on what you were cooking, once it firms up you could flip it (?). In place of aluminum, you can use those loaf-sized glass baking pans.
You are an angel! Thank you for all of your cooking videos I've watched quite a bit but don't leave a comment...I just like everything even before I watch it bec I know I'll learn something. I'm gonna be so verrrrry prepared for my #minivanlife
Looking online for some real pans(since you cover it with foil anyway) that are a little shorter so you could put rolled up foil under it(as mentioned by others) and small enough that you could get a finger in between the pan and the oven on all sides would help a lot in the cooking department due to better air circulation. And the package directions say put it in a preheated oven. You can't put it in a completely cold oven and expect the cooking times to be anywhere near what was stated. Done with the changes above it should cook in about 15 extra minutes. Oh, and as small as that oven is, Everytime you open it you added a good 5 minutes to the cook time.
Mmmm! Cornbread. That's a handy unit. Now you know you can make a full pack of cornbread in it. It takes 20 minutes in a preheated oven. Still probably uses less power to do as you did using the preheat time to cook. Think I'll make some tonight too. Take care,
You could use that same cornbread batter and fry it up into fritters or hoecakes. It takes about the same time as a pancake and will give a nice crispy texture on the outside.
Take some foil and roll up some 'rods' to raise it above the bottom of unit to avoid burning. A water bath works well too. I love mine. But takes a but of trial and error to get it right. I even added in an adjustable power supply inline with the ciggy adapter. Though haven't dialed it in yet. I've done can ravioli, frozen Mac-N-Cheese etc. while driving. That is where it shines. I have done biscuits, with reasonable results. Plan on trying out using clean sand, kinda like using a water bath, Think it can work well.
Nice review. Looks like it would be great for cooking while you are driving. Maybe winter cooking also or whenever cooking over a camp fire isn't practical or allowed at the time/place. That said, I have a nice stove/oven at home and seldom ever bake cornbread and stuff...lol. So, for me that thing would just collect dust. I could see others that like to cook maybe getting tons of use out of it though.
Your right, most other men couldn't do this complicated kind of cooking. I think it's either they havve problens opening up the packaging or measuring the water properly but they always screw it up. Men are so helpless with out a woman in their life.
@@cherigoodwin5846 No, I don't. I was being a bit over the top sarcastic. The funny thing about sarcasm is there can be a bit of truth in there. Cheers
Just updated my amazon favorites/bookmark to use your new amazon url. I'd forget otherwise lol. Nice video. Look at you all eating chili and cornbread after installing an a/c unit.
you could put a small grate in the bottom.... cut it out of a cookie cooling rack or something to lift the pan off of the bottom by appx a half an inch.... should help with any overcooking on the bottom of your pan. just my two cents
Great video can't wait to see u make next. I know Luis from Rolling Earth Ship was thinking about making bread and this could be a good way in making bread in his van. But I think van jones might steal his bread if he is t watching. Haven't caught up with his videos yet he has a ton.
I've got one had it for a few years it's a great little cooker especially during winter the only down side I find is that you need to have the vehicles Engine running when it's plugged in to the cigarette lighter socket to produce the amps needed about 14 amps I think to power it properly, yes you can run it off an high amp Leisure battery but it soon sucks it dry , I've try'ed looking for a mains 12v transformer that can supply the amps needed for those times your near mains power but can't seem to find one , check out the new Kampa Freedom gas cartridge oven , compact and reasonably priced think I'm going to buy one for this winter
I use mine to cook meatballs in sauce and make some pasta when I stop or meatball sandwiches I also have the road pro crockpot and make beef stew and so on always I have a hot meal at end of trip. And you can get crock pot liners at Walmart by the foil wraps and stuff makes for easy clean up
I stopped using aluminum for cooking or any food preparation or storage. I heard it's very unhealthy, maybe linked to Alzheimer's. Some under arm deodorants too have aluminum chlorhydrate.
D F I just LOVE parchment paper. It doesn't burn, and also oil goes right through aluminum foil so if you are making something greasy and trying to avoid clean up it won't work. But parchment paper works great.
The depth of of your corn bead in the pan makes a big difference in the final results, too shallow a depth of mix can end up with too dry and tough cornbread. Like if you make muffins, you don't make 1/2 inch tall muffins, just saying, sometimes you may need to use a smaller pan or all of the package to get the proper depth of batter. Job well done on the video.
You can use a solar oven when.the sun is.out. only reason to use this oven is if you have several days of rain. 144 watts is surely much lower and you can tie your vehicle battery to inverter for this specific purpose. Or the vehicle while vehicle is running.
im wondering if a person could take tin snips to one of those muffin pans and make muffins by making the pan small enough to fit into the small oven. also i saw the lifting up off the bottom of the oven comment had been addressed so ignore my last post.lol
Very nice. I appreciate you doing this video! Does anyone know approximately how long it would take to heat up a can of chili (can of beans, or soup) in one of these?? I'm not going to cook while I'm driving, but it sounds like I can simply start the engine in my car while I'm parked and plug it in. Thank you for any feedback you can provide!
I think the wiring going to the 12 volt accessory outlet he's using might be a bit deficient for the rate of power draw of this unit. This unit is actually a heavy power draw, requiring a steady 12 amps and as much as peak 15 amps when first plugged in. The problem is the cigarette lighter socket was not designed for that type of heavy current flow in most passenger cars. If the unit isn't able to draw a full and constant 12 amps then the result will be very slow/sluggish warming and perhaps never reaching to top temperature it was designed to. This unit was meant for commercial truck drivers (you find these at almost all truck-stops) since their rigs are equipped with 20+ amp lighter sockets. 99% of passenger cars are only equipped with 10 amp lighter sockets and I'm not talking about the fuse, I'm talking about the gauge of the wire that carries the electricity from the batter to your lighter socket. I've seen in many cars where 16 or even 18 gauge wire was used which just aren't rated to provide a constant 12 amps of power flow and that's even when everything is new and in excellent condition. As cars age, the wiring and connections also degrade and become oxidized are become less and less capable of handling their original amp ratings which in the case of most passenger cars is already less than what this box is meant to draw. The warming box draws between 12 to 15 amps during its heating cycle which it's trying to force through your cars insufficient lighter plug socket wiring, which is both causing fuses to blow and causing heat built up at the plug. The solution for a passenger type car to be able to use this without those issues is to install separate heavy gauge wiring (10 AWG) directly to your car battery along with a separate 15 amp in-line fuse and high quality lighter socket. If that's not something you feel you can do yourself, any automotive electrical shop can do that for you or even just a handyman. Took me about 15 minutes to install my own heavy gauge & fuse connection.
I love the idea of a portable stove, unfortunately I cant order threw your links since i'm Canadian and amazon has already warned me about using the links from these video's. But thank you for the info.
Yea it's a great little cooker hole on to it but yea it sucks power ! But cooks pork, meats, hot dog's, things like this can do 3 mint eggs ! And poched eggs. But keep it best of luck !
You started your timer as soon as you put it in, but the oven and pan weren't hot yet. Next time preheat the oven and pan while you're mixing your batter.
Hey Brian, Would a small toaster oven be a better choice for baking/roasting? It might use more amps/watts, but it would cook the food in half the time vs the RoadPro, so maybe less total energy used...and it would be more versatile than the RP. I enjoy your videos.
I want one now. I'm lucky because I work at a restaurant and get one free meal a day (of my choosing). So I am a bit spoiled. But it would be great to have one when I get back on the road.
I am a long haul truck driver, been using one of these for years , for a little more evan cooking roll tin foil up into a long snake, then form it into a circle ,put it up under your tin, or put about a 1/2" of water in the bottom of your oven will help control temp.Last Thanksgiving i evan made a turkey breast for dinner, pork roast /tenderloin also works well. love your channel.

im wondering if a person could take tin snips to one of those muffin pans and make muffins by making the pan small enough to fit into the small oven. also i saw the lifting up off the bottom of the oven comment had been addressed so ignore my last post.lol
Use nonstick spray so you want need the aluminum pan or foil. The spray cuts the cooking time.
A couple of hot dogs wrapped in biscuits would be good in that if you like them.
Of course it's going to take longer. It's only 144 watts. Still prefer this to using an inverter though.
Now that’s some good eating, nice little gadget you have there 👍🏾
i wonder if you put foil over the top if it would brown the top ? just a thought
preheat is the secret
Hi Brian. I enjoy your videos! I'm curious about your Maine license plate. I'm in Vacationland. Thanks , Carol
I got mine from Jaycar. Absolutely works. But I only use it with a running engine. Awesome for fifty bucks
I love the idea of a portable stove, unfortunately I cant order threw your links since i'm Canadian and amazon has already warned me about using the links from these video's. But thank you for the info.
I've gone through a couple of tjose roadpro ovens. they only get to about 300 degrees. so you do need to adjust your time accordingly
The space between the pan and the inside of the oven created a insulating barrier so it would cook slower. IMO.
Yea it's a great little cooker hole on to it but yea it sucks power ! But cooks pork, meats, hot dog's, things like this can do 3 mint eggs ! And poched eggs. But keep it best of luck !
I've used the road pro a lot in a truck while driving down the road you can make a roast in it but never tried to bake
All recipes call for preheating no matter what oven you use, probably why it took so long but still looks good
That looks great! Thankyou! Take care xxx
good luck Mr 👀😎✌
What temperature does it get to inside? I'm guessing the temp is fixed to a specific degree. e.g. cannot change from 250 degree to 350 degree.
You started your timer as soon as you put it in, but the oven and pan weren't hot yet. Next time preheat the oven and pan while you're mixing your batter.
A little honey butter on that Corn Bread would be great.
ty for your video. glad to see it.
Hey Brian,
Would a small toaster oven be a better choice for baking/roasting? It might use more amps/watts, but it would cook the food in half the time vs the RoadPro, so maybe less total energy used...and it would be more versatile than the RP. I enjoy your videos.
Will still seal if you put the foil directly in the oven and hang out the sides. Cooks a little faster.
Where can I buy Any reusable pans that fit?
as I looked at this, I just eat some Dennison chili and added some Fritos to it, much easier. but thanks for showing the Evan
dude try cornbread and lucks brand pinto beans or blackeyed peas with a little Texas Pete's hot in there soooo good!
Nice!! May have to get one!
I want one now. I'm lucky because I work at a restaurant and get one free meal a day (of my choosing). So I am a bit spoiled. But it would be great to have one when I get back on the road.
+Alfred E Newman good idea
+Alfred E Newman of course I get paid too lol!
