In all my years I've never heard a song where the very last line throws it in a totally different direction.
As explained by Tatiana herself, "This is about going to war with yourself, your bad side and good side, your internal and external self. We always need inner change; a person has to grow. If you don’t grow, life is like walking death. Duél is about me overcoming alcohol abuse, which I was thankfully able to do by myself without any form of rehab. It is about the power of the will, and we all have that. It’s about overcoming your old habits and ultimately I think it is quite a positive song, and a positive ending to the album, because if you believe in yourself you can overcome those bad things. It’s not a violent kind of duel - psychologically maybe there is some kind of violence, but it is really about taking control and becoming a better person.”
Good analysis. I can't recommend the live performances of Spiritbox's Circle With Me featuring Tatiana highly enough too. I think you'll enjoy the girl power on display. :)

The aggressive drumming during the intro, the hypersonic tremolo picking in the early section, the groovy sections in the middle, the wild rhythms - I love it all! Lots of great vocal harmonies throughout, with overlapping vocal parts occasionally diverging from each other in creative ways. I think you were looking for the word "continuous" when you were talking about the tremolo picking - it's so fast that it almost sounds continuous, but it isn't, and the speed creates a sense of excited tension.
The more I hear this song, the more I *love* the outro: I *really* dig the combination of the doomy instrumentals with Tatiana's emotional, soulful vocals. It's just a *superb* album closer. Jinjer should seriously consider a full-on jazz or blues album, heavy or otherwise, or else Tati should consider a side project along those lines. She *must not* deprive the world of a fuller exploration of that side of her vast vocal talent.
Lyrically, I think that your confusion is well-placed, and simply means that you were paying attention - well done! I suspect that the duel in this song works as a metaphor more or less on two levels simultaneously: (1) on the level of a personal inner struggle; and (2) on the the level of the Russian war on Ukraine (or war generally).
The second last verse strongly supports interpretation (2):
Amidst the smoke and cries of pain
A moment of doubt, a chance to reclaim
There's no way to hide, the wounds run deep and wide
The choice to heal or let revenge reside
A duel is supposed to be an honorable *resolution* of a conflict, such that when it's over, there is no more impetus for revenge. The Russian war on Ukraine is *not that at all.*
The last verse better supports interpretation (1):
No painkillers I need
I deserved it all indeed
Though I'm down on my knees
I have battled my old me
The vocals in these last two verses are *stellar!*
"No painkillers I need." You too are feeling those Tati meets Amy Winehouse vibes.
I can't decide if this song is about the war between Ukraine and Russia...the mentions of winter and icy grip seems to line up with that. But it also could be about a Duel within ourselves as you mentioned. Or even about both. It will be interesting to hear what Tatiana has to say about this song.

I think it's purposeful ambiguity. Our external conflicts reflect our internal ones, after all.

The beginning of this song reminds me of early Slipknot songs in a good way
Lol Duel has a similar visualiser video as Kafka but musically and dynamically this is a next level masterpiece. Also both songs have amazing deep introspective lyrics about existential crisis and self-conflict. The jazz swings in jinjer's proggy sections are always heavenly to listen to. Vlad, Eugene and Roman are all going bonkers here throughout the song. Vlad's drumming is the highlight of this track. 😂😂

I believe it’s a fight within oneself. You’re looking at the mirror that’s the stranger. If you noticed they shoot the mirror and when the figure puts the gun to the head, it’s on one side, the video spins and now it’s on the other side same person, two different views. I could be wrong, but that’s the impression I get from the video.
