    Hi Rishi - yes, there are other ways. You could plot the graph, use the quadratic formula or the 'difference of 2 squares.' The style of question might help - perhaps if it says to 2 decimal places, it could be a quadratic formula.
    With y = 2x-3.
    - it's a straight line graph (not x squared)
    - it crosses the y axis at -3 (when x = 0)
    - it's a positive gradient (as +2x)
    From here use a grid with different values of x (-4 to 4?) to work out y values.
    Hope this helps and good luck ! S

    I'm dyslexic and you're the only maths teacher I can actually understand and get things right. The only thing I'm confused with is when you said 2x had to go on the 1st section of the cross and then the other x went on the 3rd. Why didn't the x go on the 2nd section?? Thank you so so much by the way and please keep making videos! :)

    I've heard that this method isnt allowed anymore due to a change in the marking sceme where we have to use the quadractic formula to solve this :/

    • @3minutemaths
      @3minutemaths  8 лет назад

      +Caleb Khaw - Hi - all the methods are allowed and you can certainly use trial and error, cross method, quadratic formula or completing the square. The things to be careful of are:
      - if the question says "significant figures" it'll definitely be quadratic formula
      - completing the square usually says something like a + rootb
      - try cross method or trial and error but, if you don't feel confident, go straight to quadratic - it'll be easier to do
      All best with your studies S :-)

    My maths hwk features two factorising questions, one that this method helped me complete very easily, and one that has gotten me exceptionally confused.
    It says x^2 - x - 56 = 0 , and is a solving question, but the text advises that i factorise first, please help.

    • @3minutemaths
      @3minutemaths  9 лет назад

      Hi Fam Conroy you'll need to factorise first:
      x^2 - x - 56 = 0
      becomes
      (x - 8)(x + 7) = 0
      so x = 8 and -7
      Hope this helps :-)

    • @3minutemaths

      Hi Ahmed... unfortunately this wouldn't work as when I multiply the first term 2xsquared by x I get 2xcubed. Then mutiplying 2xsquared by -1 and so on.
      The end result would be 2xcubed - 2xsquared - 6x + 6

      +Tomás Casimiro - Hi ... this is called the "difference of two squares." It just means that, as 4 and 9 are both "square" numbers you can factorise to:
      4xsquared - 9
      = (2x + 3)(2x - 3)
      Same with:
      25xsquared - 49
