    I have this equation that I would like you to help me with, if possible.
    Parking Station A: charges $3.20 (first hour) and $2.00 (afterwards)
    Parking Station B: charges $6.00 (first hour) and $1.20 (afterwards)
    Calculate the times of parking which would result in the cost being the same at both parking stations.

      6 + 4y = 14
      I need to get y term on one side, and everything else on the other. The 6 needs to move so I subtract 6 from both sides:
      4y = 14 - 6

    Hey I got a question which I need help with working out.
    3u+v=17
    7u+v=29

    • @3minutemaths
      @3minutemaths  9 лет назад +3

      Hi Shoot Fresh Mine as you're working simultaneously you can change the order:
      7u+v=29
      3u+v=17
      Then takeaway the bottom equation:
      4u = 12
      Divide by 4 both sides:
      u = 3
      If you then put u=3 into any of the equations you can work out v, so:
      7(3) + v = 29
      21 + v = 29
      Take 21 from both sides
      v = 8
      I hope this all helps :-)

    im trying understand something quadratic equations no 1 x sqaured minus x minus 56 =0 changed from minus b at start to positive minus minus is a plus comes out right as 8 and minus 7 next question 3x sqaured + 7x minus 13 =0 but with this one if you change the minus at start to plus answers in back of book are different to what it comes up with any advice.

    • @3minutemaths
      @3minutemaths  10 лет назад

      Hi stephen barker .. it's quite difficult to read through this but (I think):
      xsquared - x - 56 = 0 factorises to (x - 8)(x + 7) = 0
      So, x = +8 and x = - 7 ... this is because x - 8 = 0 and x + 7 = 0
      The next one 3xsquared + 7x - 13 = 0, is a little difficult to factorise and you need to use the quadratic formula. Here's a video with this particular question ruclips.net/video/lz5j4T49HJk/видео.html .

      +Simon Deacon here is an example 2x+y=4 and x-y=-1

    • @3minutemaths
      @3minutemaths  8 лет назад

      +Bad News Bullet - Hi ... with these you'd need to add to get rid of the y's (as +y + -y = 0)
      2x + y = 4
      x - y = -1
      (Adding them)
      3x = 3
      Divide by 3
      x = 1
      Put x = 1 back into the first equation:
      2(1) + y = 4
      2 + y = 4
      Minus 2 both sides
      y = 2
      So x = 1, y = 2
      You can also check this by putting into equation 2:
      x - y = -1
      1 - 2 = -1
      I hope that's all OK? Best S :-)

    3p+5q=43
    8p+5q=73

    • @3minutemaths
      @3minutemaths  9 лет назад +5

      Hi Hamza Roblox .. as you're working simultaneously you can put the equations the other way around. So:
      8p+5q=73
      3p+5q=43
      Then take the bottom equation away from the top
      5p=30
      Divide through by 5
      p=6
      Put the value of p back into any of the equations
      8(6)+5q=73
      48+5q=73
      Take 48 from both sides
      5q=25
      Divide through by 5
      q=5
      So, p=6, q=5
      I hope this is OK.

      hey you have to multiply 1 or both equations t make X or Y the same if i multiply equation 2 by 2 i get 2x - 2y = 38 so your equations are 3x+2y= 18 and 4x-2y = 38 ADD to eliminate so 4x + 3x = 7x 2y + minus 2y cancels out and 38 + 18 = 56 so 7x = 56 divide both sides by 7 X = 8 sub back in any equation 3(8)+ 2y = 18 24 + 2y = 18 subtract 24 from both sides 2y = minus 6 divide both sides by 2 Y = minus 3 solutions are X = 8 and Y = minus 3

    Though all of this is true some of it is unnecessary. Keeping equals signs in a vertical line is essential for clear manipulation of decimals but, since x and y are different with no decimal places, it doesn't matter. Also, I chose the 2nd equation since it ends up with smaller numbers to compare viz: 3x + 12y = 42 then subtract 3x + y = 20 to get 11y = 22, much easier to see, in my opinion. Stop asking, "OK?" at the end of each sentence - students think you are asking a question. Well done, though, Simon.

    example: y=x-1 & y=-x+11

      @3minutemaths  9 лет назад

      +Cydney Lozano - Hi -
      y = x - 1
      y = -x + 11
      Because I've got a positive x and a negative x I can add them together to 'cancel them out.'
      2y = 10
      y = 5
      Substitute y = 5 into equation 1
      y = x - 1
      5 = x - 1
      x = 6
      So, x = 6 and y = 5 for both equations.
      Hope this is OK and all best S :-)

    see i have {5x+2y=19 ... 1
    {2x+3y=12 ...2
    but i dont get how you r suppose to multiple this by 3 for the top and then u need to multiple by 2 for the second part

      @yukicross6767 10 лет назад

      why*** you r suppose to multiple this by 3....

    • @3minutemaths
      @3minutemaths  10 лет назад +1

      Hi yukicross6767
      OK, as you said, multiply the top by 3 ... this will give you 6y so:
      15x + 6y = 57
      Multiply the second equation by 2 ... this will also give you 6y, so:
      4x + 6y = 24
      Take one away from the other:
      11x = 33
      These type of questions usually work out OK - if you start to get lots of decimals of odd fractions, it might be a good idea to check your working. If I divide both sides by 11 I get:
      x = 3
      Use x = 3 in either the first or second equation. I'll use the first:
      5x + 2y = 19
      When x = 3
      15 + 2y = 19
      take 15 from both sides:
      2y = 4
      Divide by 2
      y = 2
      I hope this helps and all best with your studies. S :-)

      Hi - I've worked through this (by substituting the x) to get to 3y^2 - 15y - 5 = 0, but it doesn't easily factorise ... can you just check the question? Is it 1 / (x - 3) = y or (1/x) - 3 = y?

    • @3minutemaths
      @3minutemaths  10 лет назад

      Hi HilalFener when you've calculated the value of x, use that value to work out y.
      In this case I used x = 6 and then 'substituted' that in the x + 4y = 14 equation.
      This allowed me to then calculate the value of y as 2.

    How would I do
    4x+3Y=12
    6x+2Y=13

    • @3minutemaths
      @3minutemaths  9 лет назад

      Hi Dafydd Morris
      You need to multiply the equations to make one of the terms the same. In this case I'll multiply the first by 2 and the second by 3... so I can make the y's the same:
      I'm also going to put the 'larger' number equation at the top (6x+2y=13)
      6x+2y=13
      4x+3y=12
      Multiplied becomes:
      18x+6y=39
      8x+6y=24
      Take the bottom away from the top:
      10x = 15
      Divide through by 10
      x = 1.5
      Then use x = 1.5 in any of the equations, to work out y
      6(1.5) + 2y = 13
      9 + 2y = 13
      Take 9 from both sides:
      2y= 4
      y=4
      I hope this helps and all best :-)

    5a-4b=8
    How to do this?????

    • @3minutemaths
      @3minutemaths  5 лет назад

      Hi
      If you take away the 5a's you'll get:
      -3b - - 4b .... this will be 1b as two minus signs make a plus. On the left hand side you now have 1b.
      On the right it's 6 - 8 = -2.
      So b = -2.
      To get 'a' just substitute the value of b back into one of the equations.
      5a - 3b = 6
      5a -3(-2) = 6
      5a + 6 = 6
      5a = 0
      a = 0
      Hope that's OK.
      Best S
