Made a gaff this year. Didn't use any tape. Just used Kevlar cord and wrapped it tight. Then used a 2 part loctite epoxy. Saturated it in two coats and the thing is indestructible.

13:00 Please put a cork or a safety cover over the point so you don't impale yourself like what almost happened here: 13:00

I was thinking the same thing. No way I would work on any custom gaff without protecting the end with a cork or other type of protection.

If you pour boiling water on the paracord it will shrink and be extremely tight.

Joe, nice work my dude. Gotta say, with all your pulling around the hook, I was pretty sure at some point you’d impale yourself. But hey, you got through it unscathed. Well done 👍

Cool bro. I love seen many people try this. I just wanted a really nice one. I heard of a small company that makes them by hand down here n Florida called Zeke gaff , their gaffs are supper strong.

I've learned from decades of training apprentices, that the reason demonstrations go wrong... just about every time... is that you aren't focused -- only -- on the task. You've added an audience which splits your attention in half, then you're also focused on describing what you are doing, which splits your attention, again. On top of "all that" --- you are also assessing (and critiquing) how well you articulate the lesson, while also assessing how well your student is comprehending the lesson. IT ISN'T MURPHY'S LAW! It's just the division of attention when multi-tasking. So, give yourself a break. You multi-task real gooood....!

we tie it off on the rail of the boat "long range" and we use the to pull the line tight around the hook,, soo we let out a shit load of slack tie it off and roll it up on it. Hope That helps with the tighting thing cuz that looks ruff. peaceasy happy gaffin!!!

Take the length of cord you are going to pull back through the wraps and use bowstring wax burnished in with your finger tips or a piece of leather on it before starting to force it back through the wraps. I think you will find it much easier and safer to pull back through.

Great video on making the gaff, next video should be on making that badass decaf folgers Fern planter JK. Great video, you really need to get outta the house and back on the water. You ever do any sheephead or flounder videos up your way.

thats actually a really good idea. i might go back to all the gaffs ive done and do that over the wrap. thanks for the idea... well now that i think about it, it may weaken it over time bc it wont dry as fast. i still want to try it with one just to see how itll do

Joe,. I recently found your channel and have really been enjoying seeing you fishing our local waters. we are currently revamping our boat and hope to be ready to go by April or so for the dolphin run. Do you know anywhere in Jacksonville to source that bamboo? We want to make a couple gaffs ourselves.

Wrap with really heavy braided fishing line, then coat with several coats of epoxy. That way the end doesn't look so bulbous and ugly.
