Hi John, first thanks for all your great tutorials. About tethered shooting in Lightroom with EOS R6/R5 you no longer need your workaround (great idea btw). In the latest version of LRC 10.2 (d.d. march 17) Adobe fixed the bug and now you can directly shoot with Live view into Lightroom Classic.
That is good to know. Good thing I got it out on the 6th! For what it's worth, I often used this method with the 5DIV, because LR tethering was unreliable and someone else suggested that LR reads all of the images on your card before it connects, which is why it often took an eternity.

I've just ordered one because a client has asked me to be able to preview the images while we shoot, but now that I've ordered it, that thought has come to my mind. Is it for speed?
A wired connection is exponentially faster for raw files and its more stable. Maybe you could get by tethering jpegs wirelessly but I have had wireless tethering just outright fail in environments where there are a lot of people using their phones.
after i take a picture Lightroom says that the file can't be imported , file insuported or damaged is there in work around i guess lightroom doesn't accept CR3 format

What I would love to know is how to prevent Lightroom from reading the card in camera while attempting to connect ready for tethering. Of course I could remove the card but having in there makes it work as a backup of all shots taken.
Oh interesting, I am not having this issue when using this workflow. There must be a setting somewhere in LR. Can you just hit cancel when the import dialog pops up?
@@JohnGress Pardon me, the issue doesn’t apply to this method as it’s not exactly “tethered” to lightroom. Any Canon cams that are directly tethered, lightroom still spend minimally a minute to read all the files in card before it could establish a connection although it’s a Small problem if you’re constantly connected in studio.
Great tutorial. What is the exact cable that you use with you eos r5? It looks mighty. I am running eos r5 with the macbook air M1 chip with 2 x usb-c. Any suggestions what would be the best cable solution for that combo? I am into fashion and portrait studio photography so nothing too wild but I need enough moving room. Thanks a lot.
Nowadays and without any issues at all would you use this method in order to do it straight from LR ? I mean, is there any advantage to use EOS utility?
I have stopped using LR, but this could be a way to let you write to the card and the computer if that is something LR doesn't support. Otherwise I don't think it would be much of an advantage.
John, I've reviewed your vid at least a dozen times after being on the phone with Adobe technicians trying to figure out why new MBP with M1 chipset (Monterey 12.0.1) running LrC (version 11.0) wouldn't detect my camera (Canon 5D Mark IV). Getting the computer to detect the camera is simply too much to have to deal with. I've boiled this issue down to Canon not wanting photographers to use other software; it seems for some reason the EOS Utility s/w is preventing a direct connect to LrC. It's time to forget tethering to LrC and move to Capture One. I did finally get the images to display, but only after going back to my old Mac running LrC 9.0, and even then after images came into LrC, I couldn't figure out how to get them to continuously populate the software as I was shooting. Enough of this stuff.....it has already sucking up too much of my creative energy!!
Sorry to hear that. C1 and LRC wont reliably connect to the camera if Eos Utility is running. I beleive there is a setting in EOS utility to force it not to launch when you connect the camera.
Hi John, Not sure what I'm doing wrong, but Lightroom isn't getting the images, but the computer is??? I have made sure that "Create a subfolder" was not checked.
I actually shoot with Fujifilm and tether pro plugin directly inside lightroom. I am going to switch to canon (agian) and i have a question. Using the standart tether option direcly inside lightroom uou can automatically apply setting to new pictures from previous capture. That's quite useful. Using the watch folder, newly imported pictures can use the setting from previous capture or are imported and rendered with default settings? Thanks
I used this watch folder solution because Lightroom couldn't connect to the new cameras. I beleive that since I posted the video, Lightroom was updated and now works natively with the R5 /R6.
Hi John. Your friend from across the pond. A great video once again! I can see its uses for those still using LR Classic and Canon. I understand that LR now has a live view mode but still not the control of the camera, like using the EOS utility in conjunction. I must admit, I have not used LR at all for the last three years or so, since switching to Capture One. I use Capture One for my tethered shoots as I am a product photographer and I find LR's colour profile not as good either. I also have much more control over my camera with Capture One. Too add, Capture One pilot allows me a remote trigger wireless, as oppose to using a couple of pocket wizards, if I need to be next to the set for some peculiar reason. Keep safe fella and looking forward to your next upload.
Thanks mate! I switched to C1 about 6 months ago when I got the R5 and Lightroom didn't support it for tethering, obviously, and the camera matching color profiles are still missing.
Thanks John. Interestingly enough, LR recognizes my R5 in LR for tethering - at least when it is connected over USB-C (like your setup, but using EOS Utility). Bu I can use your tutorial to only send JPGs to the computer, since in LR there's no "either or"-choice available, it would transmit RAW & JPG (so it takes even longer)... and if I want to tether "wirelessly", where LR definitely doesn't recognize the cam, EOS utility comes in handy. But then... 30 seconds/image to transmit is no option for me to use the wireless transmitting option *lol*.
When I made the video LR and the camera wouldn’t talk and I think it too several months for them to add this functionality. I just wirelessly tethered medium low jpegs with the cameras wifi and a C1 hot folder and they tethered a in 1 second or less. But then you can’t really do much with the jpegs.
This is the only workaround that I found to tether my canon rp. Anyone tethers wirelessly via WiFi ? I want to try but I’m worried about the battery life
I am glad it worked. I tried wirelessly tethering with the camera broadcasting the signal once, while teaching 50 people, and it was a disaster! 2019 5DIV
John! Can it be true?? I ordered a thethering cable for my R6 and was prepared to do your step by step instruction, but for kicks I decided to double check Adobe's tether support list and I now see the R5 and R6! Do my eyes deceive me??? lol
@@JohnGress I'm still waiting for delivery of my tether cable but I tried it with a basic usb-c to usb-c cable and it worked great. It was a bit slow but I'm guessing that might be the cable.
John, with the latest LR, I believe one doesn't need (for tethering) the EOS Utility. Or do I still? Or do I need it if I want to transfer RAW files over to my laptop whilst tethering? My main goal is to tether but have the RAW files on my laptop to edit right away. Thank you
@@JohnGress Thank you. Out of interest, I'm only able to import via tethering JPG and not the RAW directly into LRCC via tehtering. Is your approach a workaround to get RAW directly into LR via tethering. Thank you again, this is huge.
*VERSION! Maybe see if the camera is writing different file types to different discs and the one you have selected for playback in the camera is the jpg disc. If so switch to the RAW disc or write jpg and RAW to the same disc.
I was trying it this way about a week ago and its just WAY to slow. IT takes about 30-45 seconds to write a full sized RAW from my R5 to my SSD, that is WAY too long between shots.
Hi John, I tried Tethering my R5 straight to Lightroom at the weekend and it worked a treat! , the trouble I was having with the work around was my laptop (Windows) would get backed up when shooting multiple shots so would take an age to display the last shot (very frustrating), I just tried the tethering option in Lightroom and bingo, much much faster. :) , i guess the R5 and R6 are now supported :) Keep up the great content. Cheers
Thanks! I think they updated it 10 days after I posted this. However I use to use this workaround with the 5DIV because the connection was so unreliable.
UPDATE: As of December 2022, LTC Version 12.1, you can now natively tether without Canon software on Apple Silicon machines, a much needed welcome for Mac users!
Simple but annoying workaround. It pains me sometimes how slow Adobe can be to make updates. They'll say they're waiting on code or something else from Canon yet C1 drops the functionality seemingly at the snap of a finger. I've been holding on with Adobe by what seems like a thread these days, but that thread is snapping one strand at a time lol.
I hear all of that Anthony! I used LR for maybe 8 years but the R5 color profiles fiasco was the last straw. Tethering in LR was always a crap shoot for me, you never knew if an update was going to mess you up. On the other hand C1 will only write to the computer, so I do the same workaround sometimes if I need an instant in camera backup.
As of Jan 2024, it appears that "Start Tethered Capture" from LRC does actually work. At least, it has worked once so far for me, over USB-C. But who knows what evil lurks ahead?
I waited for 9 months for adobe to get with the program before giving up and buying Capture One. Turns out Capture One is a way better program for studio work and Adobe was muddying up all my colors. Ever notice how images on the back of your newer canon camera look great but then are all washed out and lifeless when you bring them into Lightroom? It doesn't need to be that way. Adobe dropped the ball really bad with Canon and we all need to be letting them know so that they can start caring about it a bit. I think they've gotten a bit too comfortable on top and need a wake up call.
I didn’t even wait a month and I switched to C1. But before making the leap, I made a video about the very color problem you mentioned. ruclips.net/video/Rew0fNWie-E/видео.html

Any Canon cams that are directly tethered, lightroom still spend minimally a minute to read all the files in card before it could establish a connection although it’s a Small problem if you’re constantly connected in studio.
That must have been the issue I was having and why I HATED tethering in LIghtroom.

@@JohnGress Highly appreciated. Thank you.
Nowadays and without any issues at all would you use this method in order to do it straight from LR ? I mean, is there any advantage to use EOS utility?
I have stopped using LR, but this could be a way to let you write to the card and the computer if that is something LR doesn't support. Otherwise I don't think it would be much of an advantage.
thanks for your time! capture one now?@@JohnGress
I have been using it since 2020. Here's a video covering some of it's latest features ruclips.net/video/LE-XwyTwxL4/видео.html
It works for me but veeery veeery slow.... any tips?
Maybe LR auto Import is disabled?
@@JohnGress No that was on. Will turn it all off an start again ... fingers crossed.
@@JohnGress thanks, yes.
But actually i need some advanced functions (overlay, to say one) only available in canon tethering app
That is also likely in Capture One.
This video solves my problem!
Great to hear!
What makes the photos show up fast in lightroom mine takea about 5 seconds to show up
An older computer or a a usb2 cable could be the problem. Maybe a you don’t have enough ram or processing power? 🤷🏼♂️
@@JohnGress thank u alot i love ur voice
@@agrassiphotography8275 Thank you! Best of luck!
Whu u use two cables the 20" and the 15'
Because there is now way that tripping over the cable can result in breaking the camera.
Thank you so much!!!!
You're welcome! Apparently the software works now.
Do my eyes deceive me??? lol
Oh well that's good! Maybe they just added it. LMK if it works. I used this workaround with my 5DIV because LR tethering was so unreliable.
Thank you
Hi Geoff. I think the latest. Erosion supports tethering. But this is still a good method if all else fails.
@@JohnGress OMGOSH. I LOVE YOU. Well not love love but you know what I mean. Thank you John, it worked.
Ha! I’m glad that you got it sorted out! Now that we’re talking about it, I think it happened to me at some point.
Great video. The random sign off messages are why I stay until the end lol
Thanks! Call your mom and wear your mask too!
@@JohnGress exactly!
Well THIS was amazing..... thank you!!!
Thank you so much! Apparently LrC tethering works now.
Ty for this but they brag on the R5 wireless speed. Why can’t I wireless tether
YW. I think you'll be hard pressed to move a RAW file with wireless anywhere near as fast as a wire. .
Cristal and clear ✨✨✨
Thanks! I hope it was helpful.
Thanks! And you sound like the guy from Fstoppers by the way.
You're welcome. Sometimes I am the guy on fstoppers.
Did you know that you can choose the same folder in LR as watch folder and destination? I usually use a YYYY-MM--DD. You mileage my vary though :)
Good to know. Thanks!
@@JohnGress avec plaisir!
Thank you for the video!
My pleasure!
Where do you get EOS utility
From canons support webpage for your camera. Look under software.
Is the process the same today?
LRC should work now with the R5.
@@JohnGress I’m going to plug it in and see how it goes tonight. I also have an R6ii
Is there a way to do this wirelessly in 2023?
Yes. It’s the same software, but wireless is still very slow compared to a wired connection unless you’re tethering smaller jpegs.
@@JohnGress Thank you John. I guess I know what I'll be doing the rest of the day. :)
I was trying it this way about a week ago and its just WAY to slow. IT takes about 30-45 seconds to write a full sized RAW from my R5 to my SSD, that is WAY too long between shots.
Oh no, Is this with a USB - C cable? For me it only takes less than 5 seconds.
@@JohnGress Yes, I was using the one that came with the R5.
UPDATE: As of December 2022, LTC Version 12.1, you can now natively tether without Canon software on Apple Silicon machines, a much needed welcome for Mac users!
thank you so mutch
You're welcome!
@@JohnGress It is so crasy. After more than two Years. It is still the only Way to shoot tetherd with my R5 and LRC. Thank you again.
Thank You🙏i did’it
Boy they could have made that easier.
Yeah, like it could just work in the first place.
Thank you so much. How in Hell did you figure that out?
You’re welcome 🙏🏼Maybe it was when I had wirelessly tether 🤷🏼♂️
As of Jan 2024, it appears that "Start Tethered Capture" from LRC does actually work. At least, it has worked once so far for me, over USB-C. But who knows what evil lurks ahead?
So it was working. And then my camera went to sleep. And now after an hour of messing around I cannot for the life of me get it to work again.
You might have too many images on your card(s) in the camera. Try removing them.
@@JohnGress worked when I removed them. I’ll try to clear them and try again. Thanks so much
I waited for 9 months for adobe to get with the program before giving up and buying Capture One.

This may help - lightroomkillertips.com/shooting-tethered-lightroom/ - "In Tethered Capture Settings” window. At the top, you can name your session (totally optional).
At the top, in the Sessions section, you can name the Folder that will be created to store your tethered images. If you want to create a subfolder, click the ‘Segment Photos by Shots’ checkbox below it.
In the Naming Section, you can give your files a more descriptive name than the default _DSC09584.CR2 name your camera will probably give it. I generally choose “Custom name - Sequence’ so I can type in a name, and then it will auto-number the files for me as I shoot (I named mine “Pink Roses” and in the ‘Start Number” field I just started with number 1, so my images will be named ‘Pink Roses-1.CR2, Pink Roses-2.CR2, and so on). In the ‘Destination’ section, you can choose where that folder you named at the top will be saved (on your computer, or hopefully your external hard drive), and you can also have your tethered images import directly into an existing collection (see Monday’s post from this week).
In the ‘Information’ Section, you can add your Copyright or other metadata (if you’ve already created Metadata templates. Here I’m adding my copyright info to the images as they’re captured). There’s also a field below for adding top level keywords (any keywords you enter here will be applied to all your tethered images from this shoot)."
