Noel Cantwell as centre forward? Usually he played full back. Brilliant performance by Bobby. No subs in those days, so Denis Law had to come back on. Substitutes were introduced in the folllowing season, 1965/66, one player repalcement only. John Connelly was only at United for just over 2 seasons, he left early on in the 1966/67 season. He won a Championship medal with Burnley in 1959/60 and one with United, 1964/5 season.
Among other things he was elegant in everything he did. He wasnt a great header of the ball but look at that still photo! His stride was so elegant that it disguised how fast he was. I remember a match vs Wolves when Charlton would have been about 30 and he raced David Wagstaff, then thought of as one of the faster wingers, for a ball for about 40 yards, Charlton beat Wagstaff by a full 5 yards! His ferocious shot is well known but his mastery of long passes is not. Journalists of the 60s rhapsodized about Luis Suarez control of spin but, not to demean another great player, Charlton did all of that. Spin left, right, backspin with either foot, appropriate to the situation.
Thanks for these great videos, Bobby Charlton is one of my favorite players and it's a pleasure to see him.
Sir Bobby Charlton, England's finest!
Finest player I ever saw charlton - complete balance could spread the ball with either foot - Dennis came a close second
