Yoo, thanks for hosting and creating this awesome video, but at 1:38:17 or so the audio loops from the beginning of the interview and we lose the end of the interview. Is there any way you still have this footage and can re-edit? The Legend deserves it :)
When I was a kid I fell in love with Talking Heads’ “Speaking in Tongues”. Twenty years later, I realized that Bernie Worrell is the foundation of that love.
I had a beautiful moment with Bernie years ago at a festival. He was grinning ear to ear after I got off stage with Zigaboo. He said “man you sho is funky” couldn’t tell me shit for months
very few songs in my lifetime (and I'm 60) have left me with my mouth hitting the floor, "A joyful Process" is one of them; heard it in '72, I was 12 yrs old...mesmerizing funk in it's purest form, a classic, rare funk instrumental masterpiece.
Bernie, is the real deal. I grew up on P'Funk. Now I see his classic roots and what he actually did to create the funk. Most of us would be afraid to jump out as he did. But he opened my door to funking without rules!! RIP, Luv you Bro! Your inspiration lives on through me and many, many more who will follow. Once you feel the funk, it's in your soul for life. It can not be taught! The real deal is in your soul!!!
Unbelievable. Chills almost the entire time he was playing the Hammond, AND I felt like crying. So beautiful. What a legend. Thank you for gracing the Earth with your presence, man. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Bernie listening to Maxine Brown and the memories that come rushing directly to him get me every single time. Thank you for letting us into a glimpse of that happiness you both shared. It’s overwhelming for me to be able to see that Bernie and I absolutely love you for it champ !
I’ve watched at least a dozen of these lectures and this is hands down my favorite. He has such great research and clips of Bernie’s pre-P-Funk days. Thanks Red Bull
The Man is A True Genius !!!.....By Far The Greatest And Most Advanced, And Most Brilliant of All of The P. Funk Artist !!...I Have Always Been So Moved and Impressed by The Scholarly Knowledge And Reverence And Great Esteem The British People , And Other European Audiences Have Always Had For African American Musicians !!!...It is Amazing how so many Great , ( And Even Lesser Known African American Artist !! )....Are Not Only Known, But Even Reverenced As Superstars in Europe !!!....
When he says he talks through the keys, he isnt kidding. Holy shit. What happens when he sits down at that organ is just magic. I've seen a lot of musicians communicate through music, but that man has a full on conversation with stories, anecdotes, jokes etc. WOW! i definitely see the Borge influence too :) so obvious once he mentioned him.
Some musicians play by feel only. You cant rehearse em or get them to repeat a phrase because the moment has passed. As an engineer, you just press record and watch the magic!
He broke it down "everything is related." Breaking the "white" stigma of "Black" entertainers. Whew this man is heavy; he didn't tell the interviewer what he wanted to here by announcing "White Jesus" wasn't and isn't the inspiration behind American "Black" music...he made the clear "right off the bat." No one dictates how he should think or defines him.
Interesting moment when the interviewer played "Knee Deep". Bernie did not perform on Knee Deep contrary to popular belief. The mastermind of Knee deep is Junie Morrison, the man who gave us Funky Worm, Aqua Boogie, One Nation under a groove, Colour me Funky, May we bang you and countless other classics. Not taking away anything from the greatness of Bernie. But Junie does not get his credit like he deserves sadly... RIP
Rise in ultra power Our great brother the late grand 👑Bernie worrell I had the pleasure of meeting him in London when he toured with mtume Beautiful humble brother 💥👏🏾💥 His music spoke volumes 🎧🎹🎤
My brother was the 1st person I knew who had the album Mothership Connection. Woke me up in the morning with it. Very loud. Very Nice. He bought all of their music including funkedelic. So I was in music school then. Most of my taste for music came from him. Mr worrell I stole as much as his style as I could. He gave those groups their signature sound. I had forgotten he has passed. So I'm going to stop and say the Khaddish for him and Mr. Joe Sample.
I grew up near Plainfield, NJ in the 60's. Plainfield was a hot bed for musical talent during that era. I saw the Parliment ( I wanta Testify ) and The Funkadelic ( What Is Soul ) both out of Plainfield. Another fantastic musical family out of Plainfield was the Boyce family. They were great. They had an entire musical show composed of a few different acts like ( The Fondelic Dancers ), all the musicians were great.
@5:11- Amazing stuff. As a sound engineer... I've done live gigs where the sound system was clearly generating feedback & none of the other 40+ people in the room could hear it.
When the interviewer plays Flashlight, the audience really got into it LOL look at the reaction..the funk was on them 🔦..Bernie Worrell such a treasure in Funk Music 🎵🎵🎵
To be fair to the guy, these “music academy” interviews are always at least a little awkward. The whole “college lecture with a special guest” format forces a weird structure on it, with the breaks of the whole room of students silently listening to entire songs, calmly respectively so barely applauding when they end, and all that. It’s kind of a pretentious way to do an interview & a poor choice in this era that more & more favors free-form conversations (which Bernie no doubt would have appreciated)
Well, the awkwardness was listening to THE WHOLE SONG! You have to respect the artist especially when a song is 40 years old and the artist probably played it a 1000 to 5000 times! It looked like he was introducing Bernie to the song! He should've turned it down and talked over it, and maybe ask questions on ow he came up with the bridge-chorus-ending and ect.....
Right. Well, he made a mistake, and Bernie may have noticed but didn't correct him because he is kind and generous, he let that slide. Polite man Bernie!
all I can say! is !! Dayummm! LOL! THIS is around the time with the Billy preston thing! check out outer space by Billy Preston! that keyboard, synth ! off the chain!!

Such an amazing and humble genius in that man. He really changed the world.

I agree between Bernie and Joe Sample, they both communicated heavily through their keyboard playing. ♫
you can't put him in ANY category, and he had a gift for music.
Bernie knows so much, he's quiet. Too genius to express himself to none geniuses. Damn
Camera in tight on Flashlight. He was still ripping through it. Amazing
you absolute legend- lovely guy.I saw him in 2005 live in Byron Bay Australia. And he pronounces Chopin the correct way-Choppin' .

Interviewer should have volunteered to allow someone else to interview Bernie, he has not a clue or feel for it.....
I think he done a pretty good job he was genuinely intrigued by him...this is the effect of the bop 🔫
I agree, the interviewer made this very awkward.

Mr. Interviewer, when you're interviewing a famous guest, the least you can do is pronounce the person's name correctly.
