      You should've seen them racing balls-to-the-wall for the win back in the late 70s like I did at Daytona 24! Practically bulletproof & uncatchable, & those that managed to get close rarely lasted half the race.
      I was only 10 or 11 at the time, & watching Ongais pilot that Interscope #0 in the lead 'round the oval at night is still burnt on the brain. So unbelievably fast & yet surprisingly quiet, with his shifts discernable by the flame lighting the track behind him(this was way before they lit the track & put that unneeded dumb chicane in). To a kid it was like a spaceship straight out of the Jetsons!
      Their addictive speed, noises, & flames spitting out like angry dragons hooked me on sports car racing for life & still brings a smile! I could never tire of the glorious 935, even just idling its unique whirling sound of massive hp waiting to be turned loose is so addicting. Speaks volumes for these pretty girls that I practically grew up in the track at Daytona & nothing else compares.

    In my opinion, Porsche has always set the bench mark by which all other race cars are designed, manufactured and tested. I've been to Le Man quite a few times back in the 1970's. I remember all too well how dominant the 935's were. That sound. The look. That amazing grip. No, these Porsches were in a league of their own. All that was required was a driver with grit, guts and a devil may care attitude. I can attest to how loud they are. I was fortunate to stand on several different corners as the 935 slowed just enough. Within mere feet, this car will blow your eardrums if you're not properly protected.
    I have many beautiful pictures of the 935's in the paddock area. I paid allot for a pass to see the goings on. I saw mechanics using women's nylons cleaning engine parts. I saw things only a true gear head would appreciate. It was enough to bring tears to my eyes to see these Porsches. I also was able to see the 917 on display along with so many other cars was previous races gone by. Its hard to comprehend the enormous cost of all those cars in one tiny area. I estimated it to be near several millions of dollars or greater. For me, the Gulf 917 was the show stopper.
    Today's race cars at Le Man are very beautiful, but the technology has all but killed that "grit". I'll take a 935 Martini Turbo against anything running at Le Man today. It might not be the fastest and it might not take first place, but it owns that track! Technology has all but ruined it for me. I understand though, why so much emphasis is placed on it. However, I grew up in an era where racing was all man and machine. You built it. You raced it. It was that simple. Even Formula 1 is too much about technology and perfection. I grew up on the likes of the Ferrari 312. Niki Lauda was always my most favorite driver. Followed by James Hunt. Man those men could bring tears to my eyes they were so damn great at racing. Today......pfffft.
    The 935 is a true legend. Nothing will ever follow it. Watch these videos. I was there when these raced head to head with all manner of race cars. They chewed them up, spit them out. They were that dominant. I was also fortunate to get a ride in one. That was the highlight of my last time at Le Man. God I love that track, that race, the people and yes, those amazing Porsches.
    Thank you Ferdinand🇩🇪

This is why then long-tailed 917 variants were developed for Lemans. Buckets of turbo lag... but when it comes on

    • @Rottensteam
      @Rottensteam 7 лет назад

      SolamenteVees It's not so bad, at least in race trim. The anti-lag system does a pretty good job at eliminating lag. Turbo lag was usually only a big issue when they upped the boost for qualifying runs.

      SolamenteVees when it comes on, BOOM!! Flames erupt from the exhaust, and you warp through space and time on the hardest VTEC hit ever.

    I've been lucky enough to build a few of these Porsches in Australia, the kremer kit was awesome but Moby dick will always be that "special one" for me. All the money I'd build one for myself.

    can anyone explain to me why there are coming flames out of the exhaust every time the driver isnt pressing the gas pedal? and is there a point (probably yes) why exactly the engineers want this to happen?

    • @CharlieBennici
      @CharlieBennici 7 лет назад

      Alex Namenlos It might be excess fuel getting into the exhaust since the turbo isn't cramming any extra air. The engine is running rich when it happens. That's what I've heard over the years.

    • @iemotorsport9954
      @iemotorsport9954 7 лет назад +3

      Anti lag system. Basically spark is cut during gear changes to keep the gases flowing and the turbo spinning which dumps excess fuel into the hot exhaust :)
