  • Against Me! frontwoman Laura Jane Grace chats with APTV Nashville correspondent Philip Obenschain about her new AOL documentary series, True Trans.
“It’s more of a vehicle to give other people a voice and a platform,” Grace says of the show. “I’m obviously a part of it, but the band being on tour is just the setting for it.”
Grace further dives into the climate of trans acceptance in the world today and some of the misconceptions people have.
Against Me!’s new album, Transgender Dysphoria Blues, is out now.

I really rspect people who don't come out because they have concerns about negative consequences.
I really also respect Laura Jane Grace for coming out because I'm really hopeful that her speaking about being trans will educate people so that society, in general, becomes accepting and the potential negative consequences eventually vanish.
It's far easier, I think, for me, as a bisexual woman, to be out without a care for what anyone thinks. But I hope that eventually the same could be said for the person who is transexual.
I really do believe that, in the case of a celebrity musician or actor, if their fans love them, then the fans need to understand that the person they love is standing right in front of them regardless of whether the fans didn't know the person was trans or not....i mean all the reasons the fans love the person are real and still exist after a person comes out and so there should be no difference in love for that person.
There would be little to no discrimination if people thought independently and followed their own internal instincts rather than blindly following some religion that tells them what to believe.

I have never heard of Laura Jane Grace or Against Me until 2 days ago. I am a straight woman who has always been accepting of the the LGBT community. It seems that Against Me has a lot of fans, but I am really curious. After Laura came out as Trans, did she loose or gain fans?

I was shocked when I heard about the sex change, Tom Gabel was probably the last musician I would picture becoming a woman, He has hinted in the past about gender dysphoria on songs like "searching for a former clarity" and "the ocean" but in my opinion his struggle was part of the appeal to Against Me, I think some of that has been lost on the newer albums. Maybe the sex change was all for publicity? As a longtime fan I dont feel bad saying I'd rather have Tom than Laura.

I was sort of shocked but it didn't really matter since it you realise that she'd always been that way and that it didn't really change much. Against Me! as a band was still Against Me! post revelation and the only thing that had changed was that Tom Gabel was now known as Laura Jane Grace.
Sure, it inspired an album (which was a pretty good album) and all that but no one liked them because of gender of the members, they simply liked the music. This might sound overly critical but if someone stopped being a fan as a result of Laura coming out as trans then that person is kind of a moron.
I think Against Me! probably gained fans since awareness of trans people was raised (since Laura sort of became front and centre for trans in a genre that is generally male dominated) thus attracting people in general, regardless of them being trans or not, and people either connected to the music on an emotional level or they listened to it and didn't like it.

Ever since Laura came out, THATS ALL the publicity has been about concerning the band. Now every time something gets brought up about this band, Laura's gender comes into the front an center focus. Why doesn't it have to get blown into such a huge deal?Just keep writing good music. What about the music, did everyone forget its a band, not "Laura Jane's gender transition show." If you want to use that as a platform, awesome but it feels like the band did a 180 and the focus is off the music.

+Kustom Hooligans I defo understand what you're saying, for a time i was like but no ones talking about the music anymore, i mean come on this is some of the best fucking music i've heard in forever! But what she's saying about having that platform that thousands and thousands and thousands don't. It feels like the media is going trans crazy right now, but imagine being a kid who's terrified to come out and suddenly its not a dirty word anymore suddenly it's punk or glamorous or any of the things trans stars are showing it can be. To people not particularly effected it can seem like it's taking over, but to the ones in the dark that suddenly see lights all around it makes such a huge difference. I can't wait for the day where it really isn't a big deal! And though to you or me it's not a big deal to the rest of the world unfortunatly it is, and like Laura said, the more and more its out there the less it's sensationalised and the more normal it will become, although i hate that word normal.

+Kyo Jane I never thought of it that way I've been pissin and moaning missing tom and the way things were. selfish as one can be. it ain't my cup of tea but if it keeps some poor fathers child from blowing their brains out than I say amen.... heaven forbid and I hope not but it could be my son one day who is saved by this story.... doubtful but not impossible.

    • @kustomhooligans

+JJ Weaver I definitely agree with you. Musicians write about what they know, feel and have experienced. I write about the things dear to me, or things that have hurt me, ect., I don't want anyone to feel like they can't be themselves, or feel that its so bad that you don't have a way out. I've had two of my best friends in the world commit suicide and one left a note saying he didn't want a funeral, so we had a memorial and there was no closure and it's painful to this day and I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy. It just bugged me that when he came out, the entire focus of the band changed to transgender issues instead of a wider spectrum of ideals and issues, that's what I was commenting on.

Taking hormones as a trans woman doesn't get rid of the Adam's apple, so her voice stays the same unless she decides to purposefully change it. When a trans guy goes on testosterone, though, his voice naturally gets deeper.
