Yeah, it is definately reminicient of turn-based games like CIV, but it's apparently not turn-based and is real-time. However, not the classic standard of RTS that we all know and love. It's interesting, tho. I do hope it gains a good audience.
This kindof game fits the Dune universe much better in my opinion. Dune doesn't have that kind of warfaare and as a dunomaniac it was always a bad representation of dune.
The game comes not from Funcom themselves, but from a dev responsible for Northgard, a quite good survival economy strategy game in real-time, with nods to things like Settlers and Cultures. I think they are able to pull this off.
It most certainly will not be an RTS. It is a strategy and it will be happening in real-time, but it is absolutely not a Real-Time Strategy. It’s just real-time with pause grand strategy game with 4X elements. God, I wish developers stopped slapping RTS on anything happening in real-time. It’s a goddamn grift is what it is. They are already getting flamed on forums and discussions for naming themselves an RTS without being neither a proper RTS nor a WestWood Dune RTS. Rightfully so, might I add. Edit: That being said, I still look forward to this game because I always thought Dune was prime material for a Grand Strategy or 4X game. I'm interested in what they'll have to offer. Edit 2: Found this posted on Steam forums, explains the situation comprehensively. This RTS thing was a marketing misstep, clearly. Judging by the reception - a substantial one. And of course its an early acces game.... because this is now the trend. Dont get me wrong i like this type of games: Crusader Kings III Civ 5 or 6, Gladius or Total War: Warhammer and etc. But if someone tells you: Dune RTS this is not the picture what come your mind. I mean why not make a BASE BUILDING RTS? DUNE II was who invent this thing. If they just want a cash grab this still make sense: come on do a dune rts because they just buy anyway because nostalgia. But no. WHY isn't ANYONE MAKE A DUNE BASE BUILDER RTS ?????
I hope the game goes beyond just Arrakis. I want to play politics in the Landsraad. Go an conquer/manage other planets in the universe. If you want to make a grand epic strategy game in Dune, you have to go beyond just Arrakis.
Herbert’s Estate, holders of the Dune IP, are notoriously against the old WestWood RTS for some reason, so I don’t think classic RTS will be happening, or even Dune 2000 remaster.
Unfortunately, the gameplay video is nothing like Westwood's Dune series, it's far too slow, the only modern Dune game we have is a Dune 2000 clone that is coming up called Barkhan, provided if it can survive a C&D from the Dune owners.
Turn-based strategies IS my thing, however, these screenshots do not really look inspiring. An Age of Wonders knock-off, mayhaps? It can be fun enough, although I'd venture that the fans of AoW have had enough of it by now, since all Triumph did since the 90s was streamlining and reducing amount of content. I doubt there can be enough of sufficiently different factions in Dune-verse though; sure, there are a lot of great houses, but can they be as different as separate races in, say, Planetfall? Endless Space? Possible in theory, but a lot of work. Besides, there are preciously little biom variety on a desert world: unless there will be other worlds playable, the game can go stale really quick. Also, small-scale battles on small battlefields aren't too good for replayability either. We'll see, I guess. My estimation for this game so far - it'll be akin to Slitherine Software games - not widely known, even if good (which isn't always the case). It looks too niche.
My bet is that, if you want a taste of what this game will be like, you should check out Shiro's previous "real time 4X" game Northgard, which I haven't played but I have heard good things about.
I have aspergers. Language and communication, particularly unscripted, are very much my weaknesses. I quite enjoy streaming as an attempt to get better at those things, but it definitely doesn't come naturally at all.
I think RTS live on just in the grand strategy/4x branch. I mean PDX main title still doing fine. But the base building RTS are really can be called near extinction by this point. The Big Corp who still made Base building RTS that I remember are Relic/sega which COH3 aren't really good by now compared to COH2 tho.

If the gameplay will be anything like Stellaris then I will really enjoy this game. Im a huge fan for Real time 4X games.
RTS is a defined term it means REAL TIME STRATEGY. A round based civ-like clone is NOT RTS.... miss me with that.
Round based? Isn’t it advertised as real-time, never mind the RTS misnomer. You can even see pause on UI screenshots.
This kindof game fits the Dune universe much better in my opinion. Dune doesn't have that kind of warfaare and as a dunomaniac it was always a bad representation of dune.
0:16 Oh no. I didnt release that. Welp, there goes my excitement.
2:18 Big sadge. Confirmed my fears.
...extra cheese
Funcom? Some 4x style of game? I don't know. Not positive about it.
The game comes not from Funcom themselves, but from a dev responsible for Northgard, a quite good survival economy strategy game in real-time, with nods to things like Settlers and Cultures. I think they are able to pull this off.
It's a 4x game, not rts though?
"In the english description so different from the german one?
because in the german description it's not labeled as RTS with 4X mechanics.
It's labeled as 4X in realtime with a bit of grand strategy mechanics."
Yeah they dont know what means RTS???? LOL And where is the BASE BUILDING RTS GAME? The studios afraid of it or what?
@@daminguez check some other of my replies in this comment section. Basic gist is that Herbert’s Estate, holders of Dune IP, are hostile towards old WestWood Dune RTS games and want them buried and forgotten.
@@everythingsgonnabealright8888 What a shame. The game what invent the base building rts.... But Herbert Estate agreed for bringing back an old crappy tabletop game.... lol.
@@daminguez maybe that’s a sign of things changing inside the Estate. Maybe that treatment of those venerable RTS isn’t adamant or universal. We can only hope.
If it is real-time, it's not too far off. Games like Stellaris and Sins of a Solar Empire both fall under "4XRTS" sort of thing
it's NOT an rts then if its 4x
yes, you can have 4x with VERY short turns, and in real time, it has been done sucessfully, but this is usually not a great combination.
@@ollllj it has been done in real-time Grand Strategy titles, but not exactly in RTS games.
EXACTLY! WTH? A game is RTS or 4x. I mean all of the 4x game is turn based so wtf? Or is a Total War style game? The big map is turn based but the fight is real time? But in the pictures is giant units go near little haxagon cities. Its very confusing. But i hope.... Oh and in the steam store page the tags: Rts, 4x, SINGLE PLAYER... oh so we dont get multiplayer?
@@daminguez there were 4X real-time titles… Stellaris, Polaris Sector are two off the top of my mind.
@@daminguez nope, it can easily be both.
It's looking like Rise of nations or Rise of legends
Absolutely not, in any way.
I'm not sure how a 4x game falls under RTS...
4X are cool
4X kind of makes me taking a few steps away from it unfortunately.
I hope the game goes beyond just Arrakis. I want to play politics in the Landsraad. Go an conquer/manage other planets in the universe. If you want to make a grand epic strategy game in Dune, you have to go beyond just Arrakis.
Comment for statistics
4X ...*yawn*
Lame why is it so hard to just make a damn traditional rts!
Herbert’s Estate, holders of the Dune IP, are notoriously against the old WestWood RTS for some reason, so I don’t think classic RTS will be happening, or even Dune 2000 remaster.
Traditional RTS have been on the back burner in general for a while, outside AoE or SC2, perhaps.
@@everythingsgonnabealright8888 still I can think of a few prequel books from the Herbert estate that would make really cool RTS's
@@thejusticetvshow9965 Prequel books are generally in very low regard within the hardcore Dune community.
@@everythingsgonnabealright8888 Just cuz it's part of that community smokes crack doesn't mean I do!
Ожидаем новую игру не rts
Unfortunately, the gameplay video is nothing like Westwood's Dune series, it's far too slow, the only modern Dune game we have is a Dune 2000 clone that is coming up called Barkhan, provided if it can survive a C&D from the Dune owners.
Please play Northgard to get your ass out of whatever you are in now
Turn-based strategies IS my thing, however, these screenshots do not really look inspiring.
It’s real time.
My bet is that, if you want a taste of what this game will be like, you should check out Shiro's previous "real time 4X" game Northgard, which I haven't played but I have heard good things about.
No thanks I will pass on this
Taskbar on the left side?
You heathen.
XD takes up less screen space. Most websites are vertically oriented with loads of empty space to the left and right, but scroll quite far vertically.
dunc xD
Civ isn't a great analogy as it is turn based, stellaris is a better comparison
Agreed. This Civ comparison is creating all kinds of misunderstandings.
What a shame if it plays like a 4x..
Disagree, Dune universe is perfect for 4X and Grand Strategy genres.
Oh God is jus gonna be a fancier C&C Rivals. The hex has me worried.
hex is the way to go. there where civilization2 variants, that used hex tiles WAY before cov5, and it was better for using hex tiles.
@@ollllj he’s talking about using hexes in real-time. Not about hexes vs squares.
@@ollllj It's not an RTS.
@@Armstrong84 yes, you are correct. But it is real-time grand strategy with 4X elements. Please check game page and Steam tags.
Thanks for the info, I am not a Civ fan at all. CIV is not a REAL TIME Strategy, its turned based... super sad
Nobody is arguing that CIV is real time. Stellaris is real time.
@@affugter I'm arguing that it is not. Just like how if this game is turned based and you have to END. A turn, then it's not real time
@@LucidLegend1984 why even talk about turned based? The screenshots have a pause and play symbol. It is likely going to play out as Stellaris.
@@affugter well that's better. My understanding is that Civ was END TURN based
@@LucidLegend1984 it is. This game is not.
Failcom
Nope thank you...
So not RTS but 4X... Disappointing.
Shame, innit.
Oh no it looks like a cheap cellphone game :( How are these graphics worse than Emperor
What do you think of the new dune show? And why is it garbage?
Wow this dude babbles a lot
I have aspergers. Language and communication, particularly unscripted, are very much my weaknesses. I quite enjoy streaming as an attempt to get better at those things, but it definitely doesn't come naturally at all.
Wow. Now I feel terrible. Sorry brother. Keep it up.
feels like RTS is dying.... I can't recall anything great after Starcraft 2.... it's just sad
Turn based Civ style 4X is not an RTS. Fix your title
It’s not his fault, they clearly advertise themselves as an RTS. Which is a fucking grift, but what can we do.
As described by the publisher/developer, "Dune: Spice Wars is a real-time strategy game with 4X elements", so it would be the 4X subset of the RTS genre, just not a traditional RTS. It's being marketed as a 4X RTS so it makes sense to refer to it as that in the title.
@@NoStringsPrd Its still confusing... :(
I’ve seen you editing the comment. You’re still wrong and it’s not turn based, it’s real-time.
@@NoStringsPrd I'll believe that when I see it.
