Exploring the idea of using my truck which is setup for winter camping as a bug out vehicle, in a realistic mock bug out scenario. Natural disasters such as fire, flooding, earthquakes, tsunamis and the like happen often all around the us and the world. Natural disasters often cause people to have to evacuate there homes, and take shelter either at family, friends, hotels or Red Cross shelters. What I want to know is would my winter car camping setup with my Cascadia Vehicle tent (CVT) work as a bug out setup in one of these types of scenarios.

Takes a big man to show his Ford being rescued by a Nissan. LOL
Lol, I have no dignity left. Thanks for the comment, I think, lol.
Jason
Beggars cant be choosers lol besides ice and deep ditches dont discriminate on which vehicles to make it stuck
Doing drills like this is an essential part of being prepared for when the REAL THING happens. Make it a fun time with friends & family-AND it lets you patch any "Holes" in your plans that might unexpectedly crop up. I've only been aware of both of your channels for a short time, but am greatly enjoying them both!
Thanks Bruce I am glad your enjoying both channels. I don't spend a lot of time on these subjects on my channel but I still believe its good run a drill like this every now and then. Thanks for watching and the comment.
Jason
I was one of the many people who had to evacuate in that Oroville CA deal. But luckily I was prepared with go bags and on the list to be notified via txt in any emergency event in my area. So I was out in a few min and out of harms way with no delay. Many friends of mine told me they were in traffic for up to 5 hours and some on empty in their vehicles With absolutely no fuel at any gas stations.
Always be prepared....
Thank you so much commenting, hopefully other people will read your comment and see how important it is to have some kit with you and ready for whatever may come up.
Jason
I had a few friends that lived up in kelly ridge when this happened. They said I could go there but I didn't think driving towards the dam when It was suppose to burst was a good idea. I found out about the dam possibly bursting a hour later cause I was asleep. So I drove through Oroville. No stop lights and ppl were on top of all the buildings.
Kudos to you for actually testing your plan. One thing I have found useful to use before each cross-country RV trip is a checklist as a way of making sure all the basic stuff gets stowed onboard before leaving home. You could draft a checklist for your bugout vehicle, too.
Loved the shot of Casey and Daisy relaxing by the fire...
you brought up a very good point about trying to discern a true survival "bug out" situation and going camping, like you said, normally if your camping and forget to pack the marshmallows you can run to the store, but you won't find them in the woods if there is no store to go to, so you made a good point and that is to know what your carrying and how to use it.
I am glad you enjoyed the video. In this scenario services would still be available, but having everything in good working order and knowing exactly how to use everything will help ease the stress of the situation. Thanks for the comment.
Jason
I have carried a car bag since the late 70's when I lived in Wyo. for several months out of the yr it is mandatory to carry survival supplies in your vehicle there so it just stuc with me to always have 72-96 hrs of supplies in my vehicle at all times
My grandfather always had one in vehicles. Including old aspirin tins in case the vehicle got a headache 😉
You guys are having way to much fun. Good food, good grog, good company around a camp fire. Thanks for sharing, it makes we want to go camping.👍
It always is a good time out when I am with Casey, I am glad you enjoyed the video and I hope find some time to get out.
Jason
Great "almost" mock bug out. Like you said disasters can happen from time to time. Good thing your truck was prepared with tow straps and the hardware to use them and link them with CW's SUV. Being prepared made that just a hiccup in the day. Great night of "inconvenient camping" as well.
Thanks
Nate
I will be completely honest with you we did not have all the proper linkages which is something I need to rectify, and Casey's rig did not have any anchor points in the back, so it was a completely jury rigged. The funny thing about it is, no body came by me the entire time I was stuck which was like an hour, but right after Casey pulled me out a guy came buy with a deuce and a half. Thanks for watching
Jason
Great set up, always better with two vehicles, or more. And a winch is an awesome piece of kit
just love it when you and Case are together....makes for great TV lol ive watched both of your guys videos and appreciate the time you have taken to remind us all that being prepared is a good thing, that it can save our lives and make a difficult scenario more comfortable. Thanks Jason, always a pleasure to watch
Thank you I am really glad you enjoyed the video. This was great drill for me to go through, I definitely feel like I will revisit this a couple times a year.
Jason
Kat Te Whetu ffffffffffn for. H
what a way to start the trip, bogged to the chassis! Haha. great video, love the heater in the tent, there's been a few times I've wished for that! And nice camera work too 👌
I figured you of all people can appreciate being bogged, Alex. To be honest until I started watching your channel and Ronny's I did not carry recovery gear in the truck. The heater is really nice, it makes it a lot nicer climbing into a toasty warm tent. Thanks for commenting. I look forward to seeing more videos from you.
Jason
I was well lubricated with beer on a camping trip when I reportedly proclaimed "every camping trip is a dress rehearsal for the next one." You guys just proved that point. In reverse, an evacuation/bug-out is simply a forced camping g trip, and therefore practice in handling awkward circumstances is needed. And you did that as well with the ditch extraction.
A good six string acoustic is another fine thing to take along with you. The music you chose for this episode is witness to that. Well done, again.
I was blessed to be born and raised in the great state of Texas. I live in Austin and own land in a couple of places here. My heart and soul are in the very soil of Texas, but it is always nice to see the incredible beauty of so many other states. I do hope you take the time to thank God, however you perceive him to be, for the beautiful country we all enjoy
I definitely do feel very blessed to live in the area I live. Thanks for the great comment.
Jason
Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for watching.
Jason
In my 1999 Ford Expedition, I had the very same thing happen, in Colorado, in a ditch. I put her into 4 wheel low, put rocks in front and behind the wheels......she climbed out in 5 seconds flat. I didn't need anyone to help me. My Expedition is now, 21 years old....still going strong!
i like that you showed your mishaps. makes the video better to watch and give us more to think about, scenario wise.
I am glad you enjoyed it, of course we always would like to do everything perfect but mistakes are how we learn. Another great thing about showing mistakes in videos it shows me who all the perfect people are;), lol.
Jason
Good stuff. Good tip to restock immediately. You won't have time or resources in an emergency.
Add a temporary tidedown to the pole next to the heater so you can keep it stay-up without fear of it falling down during the night. I used the ziptide for it most of the time. I love you two channels and lifestyle. I wish that I can meet you guys someday when I move out of SoCal.
Some great insights, thanks Jason! Natural disasters are overlooked when in comes to survival. Everyone should have a 72 hour kit that works for them. Items and tools that you are familiar with. Don't wait until the disaster to learn people!
I totally agree, I think the survival community should put more focus on natural disasters. Thanks for watching and leaving a good comment.
Jason
I really like that pullover
Thanks, I made this one, but you can find one similar if you Google search Lester River Boreal Shirt
Jason
Primal Outdoors Thank you Jason
Just found your channel for the first time… And this is my first video. I appreciate levelheaded non-fear mongering type channels like this seems to be. Your set up seems pretty realistic and solid. Good stuff but I found it.
Thank you, I don't get into fear mongering, I do believe it is a good idea to have level of preparation, and for the most part I focus on the more realistic events that actually happen quite regularly to folks, instead of the end of world scenario's. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Jason
Beautiful scenery,nice set up👍
Thank you Kenneth.
Jason
Very, very well done. I felt like I was actually camping out with you guys. Excellent tip for the immediate resupply of items. Thank you for taking the time to educate us.
saved this to Camp Cookin'.
you've got good wisdom
Thank you very much I am glad you enjoyed it.
Jason
That truck top tent is awesome!!
Sweet set up
Another marvellous example of video. production your constant determination to improve everything that you do is most admirable.
Thanks Paul, I really appreciate the compliment, I am just trying to make the best videos I can.
Jason
Omg I love that tent!
Great video , thanks for sharing.
Thank you I appreciate you watching.
Jason
Primal Outdoors You should include footage of wrestling the muddy dogs up into the tent!
That will be another video :)
Another very nice vid. Thanks, Jim
This video is awesome I watched it 10 times
Loved that ditch pull scene! Thanks for recording that. 👍🏽
I am glad you enjoyed it, thank you so much for the comment.
Jason
Enjoyed watching good ideas came out of watching. thanks for taking the time to share.
Awesome, we all would have different needs and requirements in event of a natural disaster but I am glad my video sparks ideas for you. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Jason
You guys are having way too much fun in this disaster scenario... lol... Nice job Jason. Looks like your ready for whatever you need. atb Bill...
We did have a good time, but it was good drill as well. Thanks for watching, Bill.
Jason
I think videos like these are important in light of current events. We may all be bugging out in the not too distant future.
good info thanks for sharing
Thank you I am glad you enjoyed it.
Jason
good stuff. nothing like returning to the roots of human kind and our ancestors
Drop worshippers is the best. One of the many things I miss of South Africa.
Great video guys, one tip, when you have access to that much wood, makes Siberian fire, brilliant in everyday from heat direction, minimal feeding, cooking on coals, intensifying heat or lesseningvand extinguishing, has it all man.
Atb form England
Those are wicked!!! Awesome
Another excellent video!
Thanks I am really glad you enjoyed it.
Jason
Good post guys!
Thank you I am glad you liked it.
Jason
Those buddy heaters are great and you definitely don’t have to be too concerned about CO2. My wife and I use ours camping and I leave the thing running for hours. I set it off in corner of the tent on a pop up table to keep elevated off floor and I leave a window flap semi unzipped just to be safe. Have never had any problems with it and they really do heat the hell outta the place. I was in shorts and a sweatshirt in low 30 degree weather and I was hot and had to lower the temp
Man that is some beautiful country
I enjoy the collaborative videos you and Casey produce.
great video guys
Thank you
Jason
LOL....yall cleaned that ditch out!!
I love the dogs
So I see firebugs make great steak knives as well;-) Great stuff. Best equipped bug out I have seen. If I ever have to bug out I want to be with you guy's, LOL.
The firebug is definitely seeing its share of use, pretty much the only knife I use know. We would love to have you along William, having an amazing knife maker along would definitely have its advantages. Thanks for watching.
Jason
Droewors! Representing South Africa...🙌
Love the video and the advice you give... keep it up!!!!
Very interesting thank you.👍🏻🇦🇺
Heater, the pilot light alone can be a good source of heat, you can type the heater to the overhead as an anti tilt looks like you have the frame to do it.
Yes, the pilot light alone does put out a fair amount of heat. I agree there are ways to affix the heater to the tent frame, and it would be a good precaution.
Jason
Thank you
Went sandy came up the east coast about 100 miles off shore we hunkered down here. Just after Sandy passed by it turn do west strait in to northern New Jersey and NYC. We were at my brother's home 15 miles west of Dover Delaware ready to head west for western MD. Me and my daughter her 2 brothers and my x wife. Luckily it stay out at sea till it pass. Dennis
Awesome video. Subbed!!!
Thank you I really appreciate the support.
Jason
I Like trips like that I always find something to tweak and change for the next trip out..
Going through this type of drill lets you see things that you might want to tweak that you may not have thought about on a typical camp trip. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Jason
Great Vidio. love the footage in the tent, a man and his dog
i just thought of this in like 10 seconds so it may be flawed.
it may help your heater's security if you tied a string or thin rope from one of the upper bars of the tent to the grab handle of the heater just long enough for it to move where you want it but tight enough to where it can't fall over. Or maybe make a carabeaner on each end of rope or paracord, that'd be easier for quick up and down motion and make the length consistent.
That is idea that I have thought of and may try, but I am concerned the paracord will melt from the heat, a lot of the heat goes directly up that is why I can boil water over it. Like I said I may try it but I will be closely monitoring the heat on paracord if I do. Thanks for the suggestion I really do appreciate it.
Jason
ah, that makes sense. definitely no problem. we help each other figure stuff out. I hope you figure something out.
If you ever get stuck in a ditch like you did, dig out a a section of the ditch bank, next to the road. Keep the wheels turned towards the road. That Ford will climb right out. Usually works like a charm.
That sounds like a very workable idea, I will try that next time. My only concern in this situation is the ground was frozen I would probably need to have heavier duty digging tools to get through the permafrost, but definitely still worth a try.
Jason
I see you had a shovel, you don't carry a pick, as well? I found the smallest full size pick, I could find...and cut the handle down, by a third....it doesn't take up much room. CYA. HOOAH!
yankeewatchdog Or you can build a fire on the ground, let it burn out, then dig where the fire was. It should be thawed. You only need a few square feet.
hi Jason! first time watching your video and it was so awesome made. I have been following Casey for few years and another fella Todd at Central Oregon which is still working on of his buyout truck. I wish that I live close enough with your gentlemen so hangout with. Great video and I just sub on your video and can't wait to see more of it! Thanks for sharing, Dino
I am glad you enjoyed the video, Todd and Casey are great guys and I enjoy getting out with them. I really do appreciate you subbing and I hope you continue to enjoy the channel.
Jason
Great info! Thks
Great adventure!!! Looks looks like you guys had an awesome time!! Pretty nice carrying your home on your back... Glad to see you out doing something a little different!!!
Todd
I am really enjoying the setup, it is pretty handy having all my gear ready to go at a moments notice, for fun times and bad times. It was fun to run this drill and though you won't see much of this type of content on my channel I am sure I will revisit this again in the future. Thanks for watching, Todd.
Jason
Your old truck cap for sale? That was a nice one with the side access.Actually kidding but I just took mine off to haul gravel and topsoil and miss having the overnight necessities in there.I do not dare leave it in the back as the damn Heroin addicts are in need of control around here.Unfortunately clean needles free food and cell phones passes as control here.Great video.
There are times I miss the truck cap as well, and theft is my biggest concern with my gear the way it is. I do like how easy everything is to get to compared having to crawl into truck cap. Good and bad to everything. Its my eventual goal to trade this truck off and get a van, but it has to have 4 wheel drive and that is going to be costly.
Jason
I have Cheap Home depot Knee pads for load unload when taking the wife and dogs.Wifes pushing for a camping trailer. It has caused a bit of a fight as I will have nothing to to do with campgrounds.I am pushing for a four wheel van myself.I am thinking of building my own.
very well done,
practice makes perfect
Thank You
Jason
nice video good deal
Thank you I am glad you liked it.
Jason
This was an interesting video.
Thanks for giving me some ideas
Thanks you for watching, I am glad you found the video useful.
Jason
Almost thought he wasn’t going to be able to pull you out, nice job.
Excellent vid!
Thank you I am glad you enjoyed it.
Jason
Thank you.
Great video and good points about the need to re-stage your kit after each trip. Would have liked to see your staging of gear, and mention of medical supplies a little more. Keep up the good work, and thank you.
I appreciate your videos. If you take the back roads often enough, eventually you will get stuck or you will be helping someone else get unstuck. Having the recovery strap was smart. At the very least, I would put a hitch pin on your receiver hitch (perhaps you have one in your tool/gear box) which can be used as an anchor point for the recovery strap if you have to pull someone else out. A clevis shackle would be even better.
Nice video excellent music too! ✌🏽️😎 Thanks for sharing.
I am glad you enjoyed it, thanks for the comment.
Jason
Great video
I can watch your videos all day long. Great content.
BUG OUT BAG TIME=GREAT VIDEO
Glad you enjoyed it.
Jason
That truck top shelter looks like a nice piece of gear. I've seen some that look pretty flimsy--but the one you have looks solid from what I can see.
The CVT tents are pretty well built, and that night the wind blew hard. Thanks for watching.
Jason
Great test of your equipment brother. Good thing you bought that recovery strap! It's always good to be ready for anything. The hardest part is cleaning and restocking right after a trip.
Yeah, that recovery strap has been a good purchase, lol. I typically don't restock right after my trips and often think I will clean up a piece of gear before I head out again, but this trip taught me the importance of getting it done right away. Thanks for watching, congrats on the new house.
Jason
Primal Outdoors Thanks Jason. We're gonna have a little party after we move. You're definitely invited if you want to come!
When you have a date let me know
Primal Outdoors Will do!
Great scenario and recovery. Subscribed
Thank you for the support and I am glad you enjoyed the video.
Jason
I'm live in Arkansas .. Pendleton is my favorite !!!
Awesome now I know if I ever end up in Arkansas I can still get my favorite whisky. Thanks for the comment.
Jason
This is a Good Idea to do to prepare for the Unexpected👍 I want to get a 16'-20' trailer that I can have ready to with all the thing we will need. I've got it all boxed up now and ready to put in the trailer. I just need to get it and to build some racks for my totes to stack up in it.
you know what to say to you hope and faith
That is all we can have in bad situation.
You guts sure have it nailed down Jason !great video as always !
atb john
I appreciate the confidence John but I would say I had loosely nailed down but the exercise definitely will help me sure things up.
Jason
you had a new sub at steak and pendleton....and that badass truck tent haha
Thanks James I really appreciate the support.
Jason
Thanks for sharing.👍God bless.
Cool video! I was just cruising different videos. Dialing in my truck now. Anyways, came across this video and saw that your based in Central Oregon which is where I live as well (west of bend). Just subbed so I can follow your adventures. I just bought the decked truck bed storage. Got a canopy recently from craigslist. Sort of dialing in a bugout/stealth camping rig haha. Cant wait to hit up some camping and fishing this spring!
That is awesome, I am slowly working details on my rig as well. I am definitely looking forward to some warmer dryer weather.
Jason
Hey big guy thanks for the viage please show the dogs in the tent just a little more thanks
Great Video! What's the green sweater you're using? Is it made out of wool? Thanks again for the great video!
I made this sweater and it is wool. You can find a similar sweater if you Google search Lester River Boreal shirt.
Jason
Good video!! From scappoose here
love your videos! keep them coming!
sub!
Thank you, great name by the way.
Jason
we have a bug out plan, but have never practiced it ... thinking we should get on it!
Your floppy-eared dog is so chill! :P
Great video. I keep saying I'm gonna make a bug out bag. I gotta get my shit in gear
Dog is like, "Can I eat that?" Lol.
Enjoy your videos. Question: With the wind howling outside do you wear earplugs while sleeping. I would imagine that you do your best to park with the trees as a break but does it get really loud? I think the idea with the heater and water pot hanging is a great one.
I didn't have ear plugs but that would have been a good idea, because it was super loud that evening. Because of the wet snow and we kept getting stuck we didn't set our rigs as well as we would have liked so the wind was really pounding us. Making the coffee with the heater is great I am very happy with how that works out for me. It also conserves on fuel since your going to be running the heater anyhow. Thanks for the great comment.
Jason
Nice video
Nothing like bringing man's best friend outdoors, to bad CVT couldn't make a doggie ramp ( I need to call Mr Culpepper). Casey isn't allowed in Canada after his comments about eating them (dogs) so he should have lots of extra food Incase you have to head north one's day.
Lol, I know he always eyeing my dogs as possible food source. I love having my dogs out with me the make every adventure that much more enjoyable. Thanks for the great comment.
Jason
Cool setup you have. I have been considering something like this for my truck too. I like the low profile of the tent behind the cab. Curious how hard it is to get your dogs in the tent. That was the main reason I went with the in bed truck tent before. (And the price..)
I am really liking this setup, but getting the dogs in an out is the one main challenge. With the tent at this height its not too bad for me to get them in and out.
Jason
