Absolutely astounding piece & player. I love the guitar too. We need more world class guitarists to adopt extended range guitar. Even just 3 extra basses make an enormous difference. More from Petra please.
35K of these views have probably been mine. This is an astounding performance from start to finish, and I suspect I'll never tire of it. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Playing Weiss's compositions on the guitar usually resembles watching Nolan's Imax moovies on an old and worn out B&W TV, but not this time :-) Finally someone who understands counterpoint and phrases beautifully and logically shapes dynamics; rare thing 😀 🙏
This must be be the saddest piece in the whole classical guitar repertoire. This performance is incomparably great, aided by the 9-string guitar. Bravissima!
Beautifully played ! It's interesting to note that Petra plays the Chaconne from JS Bach on same instrument ; both pieces speaking all about death, and the connection in between Weiss and Bach being obviously very strong. On a particular passage, I wonder what it the symbolic meaning of these repeated notes ? not a "bourdon" but something more dramatic... Death knocking at the door ? In the second part of Bach's Chaconne, in D major, after a very tender passage in arpeggios, we hear something similar ; bass notes repeated, reintroducing tension leading toward the third movement. JS Bach was not lute player, he composed the partitas for the lute on a very weird instrument called "lautenwerk" with a keyboard (i.e. with usage of 10 fingers !!!! when we lutenists and guitarist have only 4 to produce notes ;-))... and Bach was very respectful of the talent of SL Weiss. Weiss is very underrated because he composed music only for the baroque lute. Thank You Petra !
Weiss is one of my favorite composers simply because he is a melodious composer and that's what i like to listen to. besides, i really enjoy Petra Polackova's performance. She touches my heart so easily. Thanks for uploading.
Wonderful performace Petra . When I first played this piece I was enthralled by Weiss`s skill in composition. Thank you for inspiring me to play it again.
This was my first piece I learned when I got my 7 string classical! Awesome performance, beautiful guitar and especially beautiful tone. This is no doubt my favorite interpretation and performance of this piece. Keep up the superb work!
Here, she has to have the best tone I've heard in some 45 years of listening to guitar music. Most notable is the pure crescendo she achieves, made without sacrificing or changing the timbre of the basic notes. Usually such crescendo is more of a characteristic of a flesh attack rather than nails, nails all to often disintegrate into a cliched "naily" upper-partial laden sound as the volume is pushed. From watching how her hand works I'm concluding she is using short nails and a right-side of the fingertip/nail attack, a la Presti but without the hand and wrist contortions. Perhaps more akin to lute technique. Polackova's right hand approach is quite different to the approach I and thousands of others have inherited via the Aguado Arcas Tarrega Segovia tradition. I love the result.
Key is Bm. There's a transcription by Frederick Noad in that key. (in his book The Baroque guitar) Asides from the lower bass notes, there are some different voicings for the chords as far as I can tell. Quite curious which transcription was used here. Probably end up annotating the Noad transcription otherwise.
Jan Antonín Losy, Count of Losinthal (German: Johann Anton Losy von Losinthal ); also known as Comte d'Logy ( Losi or Lozi ), (c. 1650 [1] - 22 August 1721 [2]) was a Bohemian aristocrat, Baroque lute player and composer from Prague. His lute works combine the French style brisé with a more Italian cantabile style. - Wikipedia

Just wow. Words are not sufficient to describe the power of this performance. It is transcendent. Such depth. And beauty.
That guitar holds the balance so well between a lute sound and a classical guitar sound.

Beautiful lady playing beautiful music. What more can one want?
I love this piece and this performance!!! One question: what key are you playing it in? Whose transcription are you playing? Ok two questions :).

Hello to you, can you please share more about your guitar ? What type is it , and how many strings ?
Thanks for your endearing music.
this is memorial to count LOsy von LOsinthal . one of S.l.Weiss finest pieces.

Being caressed, while waiting for that 9th string.
marvellous please do you know the guitar maker?
What kind of string are they?
pure gold 😀
Tuned at about A=430
Jimi Hendrix approves
i swear that on occasion she uses her chin to damp the lowest string.
I thought you were joking😂
