2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV: Is The Sequel To The Bolt Any Good?

  • Earlier this week, we gave you a walk-around of the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV - and from the comments some of you made, you'd be forgiven for thinking we didn't like it at all.
As one of the most affordable EVs on sale in North America, we think it's a car aimed less at early adopters and EV fans - and more at regular car buyers wanting to have a competent, practical car with enough gadgets to keep everyone happy.
If you're looking for the same pep as the original Bolt EV though? You may find things aren't quite as you'd hoped.
But Is the Bolt EUV as good an EV as the original Bolt EV?
As we quickly discovered, it all depends on what you want in a car, what your approach to used cars versus buying new is - and what your expectations are for a car built on what is now pretty old EV tech.

My wife and I bought a 2022 EUV a few months ago and we're obsessed with it. Granted, we were coming from a ~15 year old honda civic and haven't been inside of any other electric car, so we find the simplest things very exciting, like carplay, heated seats, having a rear camera, etc lol. I can see why reviewers who have a lot of experience with other higher end EVs wouldn't be as psyched about it, but for our purposes it's excellent 👍

I agree the seats are stiff. They are noticibly stiffer than the 2012 Honda Civic that my '22 Bolt EUV replaced. One thing I can say however, is that on 7 hour road trips the soft Civic seats would leave me with back pain on the same 7 hour trips. The stiffer Bolt seats have never given me back pain. I like soft seats, but my back does not handle soft seats well on long trips. Everybody is a little different though so there's that. Granted a fluffy after market seat cover could make them softer too. The seats I have are the LT1 fabric seats. We have a '22 Bolt EV with vinyl or leather seats, I forget. Those feel softer than the fabric seats. Though I guess this is aĺl subjective and it is better to sit in the car at a dealership and see for yourself.

For our first EV this is a great choice and it serves the purpose as a commuter that can charge at the work place if necessary, but mainly at home with far less cost than the 2008 Matrix it replaced. If I want something a little faster, a little more plush, maybe the Blazer or the Equinox planned will be at a price we can afford.

I disagree on the shifter. The 'toggle' design the first generation Bolt and some other GM products used was panned by people test driving or owning them.
I don't understand why you both find the layout of the buttons 'wrong.' They are the standard PRND(L) layout that automatic transmissions have used for decades. The reason the Reverse and Drive buttons are different is for safety purposes. You can't just randomly 'push' the button and do damage to the motor. You can randomly push Neutral because that won't cause damage. That is also why the Park button is offset so it is unlikely to be hit by accident. I do agree that the linear buttons is a waste of space though; a simply dial would be better.

    • @lw02
      @lw02 Год назад

I'll have to agree with Nikki and Kate on this one, I don't know why so many reviewers panned the original shifter. I found it very quick and intuitive to use similar to cars with manual transmissions, reverse was forward and to the left and 1st (or drive) you would pull back. Parking and driving you would not need to look at the shifter whereas now when I shift I have to look down at it. Also when activating/deactivating Sport Mode, Traction Control or Lane Keeping Assist I have to look to make sure I am not inadvertently hitting the shifter buttons instead.

Thank you so much for this review, Kate and Nikki! To me it was the perfect rundown of various elements ranging from door chimes to charging curves, acceleration to wheelbase, so many bits in between, and how the whole package compares to the existing Bolt. Your points and counterpoints were spot on with crucial context that others often neglect. Sadly, this really does strike me as a strange sort of temporary, half effort bridge offering from GM while we wait for the upcoming Blazer and Equinox EVs. Please keep up the good work!

Your disappointment is clear. But this is an EV that offers decent mileage , good at home charging, reasonable comfort and safety. You made the point that for for certain drivers that is what they want. At $32,000 for the higher trim and assuming Chevrolet does have the federal rebate next year, the car would be about $20,000 in New Jersey. It would be hard to find a gas car to compete , let alone an EV.

    • @toyotaprius79
      @toyotaprius79 Год назад +2

Yes but it's in the arms race and competition of the market, going neck in neck but at what direction?
GM leaves a lot wanting for what looks like a lack of attention to detail and coordination with original Bolt drivers. GM leaves a lot wanting about EVs for many past reasons.

The thing I don't like about the original bolt is that it doesn't offer adaptive cruise control on any level. That adaptive cruise control without having to have super cruise is a game changer on the highway and you can use it on the street. The new EV premium has adaptive cruise control. That makes a difference for me! I believe you talked about adding the COMMA 2 driving system to solve that problem

Talking about the small cup holders brings up one of my biggest pet peeves about the EUV. I've owned an EUV since late August and numerous times I've dropped something in the gap between the driver's seat and the center console. There is about an inch between the driver's seat and the center console at their closest point and about 3/4 of an inch between the passenger seat and the console. There is also more than ample room between the front seats and the doors for operating the seat controls.
Because of this, I definitely feel that either the center console should have been a bit wider or the narrower that average front seats should have been a bit wider. The obvious answer to why they aren't is GM didn't want to make new parts for either of those vs. reuse the parts from the EV; and using seats from something like the Equinox would have been too wide. I get it on the seats, there are 2 of them per car and it is a somewhat expensive part. But for all the talk they did about the EUV not sharing any sheet metal with the EV, it shouldn't have been too costly to come up with an injection mold to facilitate a slightly larger center console if they had any genuine sales aspirations for the EUV.

  • @QMaverick1
    @QMaverick1 Год назад +2

We bought a Bolt EV instead of the EUV (2LT) because the extra expense of the EUV didn't seem worth it. I wanted the punchier EV and the better efficiency (because it's lighter).
We got a buyback on our OG 2018 Bolt, bought a Mach-E 4X with the buyback money . . . then we sold our 2017 Volt LT for more than we bought it, and used THAT money to buy a 2022 Bolt EV :-)
Overall, I do think the '22 Bolt EV is a little nicer than the '18 Bolt EV we had. The interior feels nicer, and the infotainment system is, overall, better. I hate the cupholders in both generations.

Now THIS was a fair video on the merits and drawbacks of the modern Bolt EUV. I am kind of convinced that the 2023 is a minor tweaked version of the 2022 so my 2023 should not vary too much from your comments. I am not that conscious of the chimes because my previous vehicles had annoying beeps or pings. The chimes are nice if used sparingly. The seats are not completely comfortable for a big guy like myself (370lbs) but adequate for long journeys. The steering wheel is kinda close to my pooch but the squared off bottom of the wheel helps. The ride is solid which I like. It give me the feel of quality and escape from the environment. Road noise is minimal other than the tires. The two things I don't care for in my 2023 are the pull switches and the tiny glove box. I really hate the tiny glove box. I believe a shift handle would have been better than the switches. Losing the shift handle removes the "familiarity of the feel" I had. I accidentally pulled up on the emergency brake once rather than drive. NOT smart. Overall I am pleased with my new Bolt EUV and thank you for following up on the previous video.

We bought a ‘22 EUV this past June. We love it.
It is an exceptional value for the money. The Equinox EV will be $10k+ more expensive, the Blazer even more than that.
The Bolt EUV has great range and features for the price. We had a mid trim 2015 Camry that we replaced with our mid trim EUV, and the EUV exceeds the Camry in nearly every regard.
My friend has a higher trim level ICE civic, and our EUV is better in every aspect except MAYBE handling.
The fast charging sucks… but this is a commuter car. We charge exclusively at home. My wife drives it an hour each way to/from work and likes the seats.
We save $200-$300 a month on fuel costs, which is the equivalent of an ICE car at a $10k-$15k lower price… what are you buying for under $20k that comes close?
This is not a luxury car, but it’s a tremendous value in its class. I’m quite surprised by the generally meh review in the video.

LOL - that is why they don’t bring EU vehicles to the US.
Crash and EPA testing are really expensive in the US. Even though they have similar standards in the EU. So manufacturers don’t have the market to justify the cost.
They had an episode on this a while back, I am surprised they didn’t plug the video after making the comment.

Thanks for the video; you've made some great points. The seats and overall size of the EUV are a better match for me; the original Bolt's seats are not my cup of tea.
I've read that all these sound settings can be modified, or at least turned down, in the infotainment center.
My Lt euv is going to be built mid-January '23, and I'll be using it for my commuter and charging at home, and I think it'll be perfect for that task -- I don't want super cruise or a sunroof. I did a lot of research on the lower-priced EVs, and to me the Bolt is the best deal (the air-cooled battery in the Leaf made it a no go for me). I had a '23 bolt ev on order, but found out that the EV no longer has the drive-motor cooling loop that the previous bolt had, but the euv has retained this feature; this made me change my order to an euv.
In sept I sold my '19 awd Prius for more than I paid for it new, and ordered the euv right away. I've been driving my '04 jetta tdi wagon --- with completely worn out suspension -- since then, so I expect the Bolt will feel like it has fabulous suspension :)

I ordered a 2023 Bolt EUV Premier, no Sun and Sound and… no Super Cruise. I actually wanted the Super Cruise but was told GM wasn’t allowing that as an option at the moment. Not sure why not (chip issue maybe?) but, couldn’t get it. Didn’t want the sun roof because it’s cool but just another system that can go wrong (I’ve seen it have issues in other videos.) Plus being in Michigan keeping heat in the car in February is crucial so, one less heat loss point. Maybe that is wrong thinking but it saved me money. My final coat was $30590, thanks to my father-in-law’s GM retiree employee discount (got the blue color too, which is an extra $395.) Haven’t heard an updated timeframe yet (ordered it on Oct. 24th) so 4-6 months is still the estimate. Should get whatever federal tax credit it qualifies for at least ($3750 seems likely.)

This seems like a very fair review to me. It's true that back in our day we used to be impressed if a family car did 0-60 mph in less than 10 seconds... but those were different times. These days, traffic is more dense and every car accelerates more quickly, so to have a car that aims to reproduce a legacy driving feel is going to mean lacklustre sales.

It's a very good thing the GM did not abandum the Bolt after all the problems they had. This is the type of EV the general public needs, an EV to go to work and run general errands. The general public can't handle a 400 to 1000 horsepower car. Good thing I'm not part of the "General Public", so I NEED a Tesla Plaid or a Mustang Mach e Performance. :)

I do love you all and this channel. I am a sponsor on RUclips, and I want you to understand my great disappointment with the first and now this review. The concepts of "as good" and "better" are very subjective, and while I will admit GM is horrible at "badging" it's products (Volt, Bolt, Bolt EUV) and the battery fire fiasco was challenging, would you PLEASE give this car a fair shake? Let's start out with an opening of assumptions about the cars future. While the possibility of it being phased out is real, it is just as possible that it will continue to sell, even for less, particularly if they can configure it to have ultium batteries (with faster DC charging) because it's size, and potential affordability would make it particularly marketable IN a recession. American motors did that with the Nash Rambler, which they phased out in 1956 with the larger mid sized Ramblers, and brought back in the recession of 1958 as the Rambler American. No corporation owns the future, or a crystal ball to predict it, so your speculation on the future of this car is tedious.
Next, while the EUV is not as quick as the Bolt (I've had both), in "Sport mode" it is a bit faster (accelerator response) and for my use, as "responsive" as my Bolt, so I'm wondering if you even TRIED it in Sport mode? Then the tedious complaints about the chimes, virtually ALL of which can be turned off in the settings menu. The buttons work just fine, once you learn them, they can. be used without looking. Again, I remember pushbutton automatic transmissions. I found the original shift paddle in my Bolt difficult because the side button to get it out of Park was difficult to feel and push with my neuropathy. The pushbutton shift is very "clear" push to stop, pull to go, very simple, and I don't need to look at the buttons. SUBJECTIVE judgements !!
Thanks for saying complimentary things about Super Cruise, and the general existence of the car. I would have appreciated some more praises for the comfort, much more roomy back seat leg room, the upgraded infotainment system, thicker padding in the seats (firm or not) and the general upgrades to a more "luxury car" feel for the car.
At 73, it's my 7th EV, the first "NEW" car I've purchased in 40 years. Read that please, 40 years, I bought this car because it does everything a car is supposed to do exceptionally well, at a price point that is good, and GREAT for an EV. Yes, the DC fast charging is not as fast as 150KWH, but that costs a lot more money. And the 52KWH will charge at 45+KWH for most of the cycle IF the charger is rated at 150 and in a good mood. The time to charge lets me stretch my legs, eat something, walk my dog, etc. I would like faster charging (who wouldn't?) but not enough to pay an extra 10K for a car I only fast charge a dozen times a year.
While I appreciate the usual mix of objective info and subjective thoughts, I think you were unfair to this car. You criticized it for not being what you wanted it to be, and mostly ignored what it is, an excellent value. AND, it's NOT a successor. They are still selling the regular Bolt. This car didn't REPLACE the Bolt. It's an additional option. You're the one's that created this "better" paradigm. And I am disappointed that you cast it in this light, and basically trashed this car for simply being an alternative to the original Bolt. Y'all can do better, and I'm sorry you didn't.

Reducing the peak power is fine if it comes along with greater practical range.
On the thing being cheap looking: The materials and robot time for a cheap looking design cost just about exactly the same as would be the case for a good looking design. Stuff that doesn't line up is just evidence of bad design.
On modes: Cars should not have modes. They should be able to understand from your actions on the steering wheel and the pedals what you want it to do. If you slam down on the "go pedal" it should get moving as fast as it can manage. If you ease it part way down it should go smoothly and gain speed.

In the US market this is the best bang for the buck. I would stick with the regular Bolt EV instead of the EUV for slightly better range. None of the vehicles offered are particularly efficient. I am not interested in the tech toys. Good reliable and fun transportation will do just fine. The entire market for EV's keeps going in the more and more complicated tech direction and higher cost. They are not very efficient at all. It is all very disappointing. The positive note here with the Bolt is the cost came down. If you are out pricing used EV's they are being priced as high at this new car. That seriously becomes the bottom line at this moment. I have also seen several reports that GM actually slowed down the charging on this car for the DCFC. That is really a shame, but they are still using the older battery chemistry here so that is probably a self preservation effort. I guess I am looking at it like the glass is half full. GM decreased the price of an EV in a very high inflation market. That will be enough to make this a good seller. I prefer smaller, lighter, more efficient so the Equinox and Blazer do not interest me. If the I3 wasn't so riddled with gremlins I would consider a used I3, but can't say I am willing to risk it. Luckily I am about 2 years out from needing to buy a car so hopefully something good happens or like you said people start dumping the Bolt for the new hotness and I can buy one of these cheap. If inflation and supply chain continues to put pressure on the vehicle market I don't look to see prices dropping too much if any at all.

Came here to learn something... I learned that these 2 have terrible insights and opinions on the Chevy Bolt/EUV.
I've driven a 2019 Bolt since I bought it in late 2018 and I just got a 2023 EUV. You are convinced that GM deliberately made the vehicle slower to somehow appeal to gas drivers. That's just a ridiculous idea. They had the Bolt ev platform and made it a little larger and thus heavier. Of course it will be a bit slower... and with that you are only talking a half second in the 0-60 times. Physics.
Apple carplay has worked for me 100% of the time. Sorry that you have an Android.
Screen in EUV a bit snappier and sharper but functionality is exactly the same as the 2019.
You can turn all the audio alerts/chimes down or off in settings. It's called options, RTFM.
Look down in the door pocket... an enormous water bottle will fit there. Yet you somehow missed that.
The button debate is just bizarre. They removed a giant stalk that was essentially a large button and made the console sleek and user friendly. I guess ymmv.
99.999% of people who have driven both greatly prefer the EUV seats... you don't. Ok.

I disagree that "dumbing down" or "de-tuning" the EVs is "not necessarily a bad thing." It is a bad thing because it perpetuates the FUD that driving an EV (or just EVs in general) are boring and are for tree-huggers who do not care about the car culture and just want to kill the car driving experience.
It doesn't help that nearly every car reviewer on RUclips does the same thing: Floor the accelerator at stand still for that all-important acceleration test. I honestly never in my life ever floored the accelerator when the car is at stand still - the car simply would not behave well. So the car reviewers already came in with certain biases/expectations. Now adding on to the fact that power delivery tuning on an electrical motor is so much easier than an ICE. So what you'd get is biases plus de-tuning of power delivery all making EVs arguably less exciting to drive and the experience that much artificial....

One thing to add to this discussion is that GM was a very early competitor in the EV game when they were selling the EV 1 back in 1996. Those who had them loved them, and yet had the rug and literally the car pulled out from under them. GM is kind of making up for their mistake by snatching the EV 1 away from customers, and with current Bolt sales they have far surpassed the 1,117 EV’s they sold back then. In October Chevy recorded 14,709, they are on to something, especially in this price range.

Honestly, the 2023 Chevy Bolt is so much better than the 2022 Bolt EUV for what both of the cars offer, and you can currently get it for about 6k cheaper. If they keep the 2023 Chevy Bolt price as is come 1 Jan, 2023... it will be the absolute best bang for buck EV on the entire market. Granted, you still have to deal with the unacceptably slow DC fast charging speed.
As you mentioned however, the depreciation on the 2022 Bolt EUV will likely be very bad. However, with the $4500 used car credit, it might actually be EASIER to sell a used 2023 Chevy Bolt compared to the 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV in the used car market, even with the $30K-38K Equinox EV's flooding the market in 2024. From what I can tell, car-wise, the main difference between the 2023 Chevy Bolt and the 2024 Chevy Equinox EV will be the size, 50ish extra miles and the upgraded DC charging. You could skip those and buy a used 2023 Chevy Bolt for probably less than $20K, which isn't as big of a loss in value as trying to sell a 2022 Bolt EUV would be.

Gee, Gm is making an EV that appeals to a broader audience that actual everyday people want, they have a lot of nerve. They should be catering to the whims of auto reviewers who are stuck on charging speeds and range.
No it's an EV, it's different than an ICE, you get to charge everyday and have 250 miles range - everyday. You can't do that with a gas car, it's a different dynamic. How about reviewers actually waking up to that fact?
It's the cheapest EV you can buy in the US so let's compare it to an MG from a different country with a different economy and system, that'll work!

Cheaper than other EVs, but GM has lost my trust. For decades they have had quality issues. Then the poorly executed Bolt recall just turned me off to GM. It will take a decade of good results to get me to consider them again.
I am mildly optimistic that in 2024 we will have many options on the 35,000 dollars and under price point.

Unfortunately except for GM and Nissan everybody else is aiming more upmarket.

Ford is working on an electric Puma, replacement for the Fiesta. They will bring it to the USA when hell freezes over, though, because "Americans only buy SUVs and trucks."

th e chevy bolt has exactly the same problem as the nissan leaf; both were refreshed by total idiots who totally ignored the only flaw that mattered - the fact that their level 3 charging was no faster than their level 2 charging. total failure foe chevy and nissan.
in this day and age that is an unpardonable sin.

I am quite disappointed that the Equinox EV is going to be FWD - any bespoke EV should be RWD or AWD. There is no excuse for an Ultium platform EV to be a front wheel drive - period.
