You guys are using much too much carbide. Use less but also put it in a waterbowl, is much more effective. The amount of carbide you pour onto the ground is enough to fill the ton ten times with an explosive acetylene/ air mixture. Also it looks like it you had produced too much acetylene this way and oxigen waspressed out to an insufficient amount- that is why deep yellow flame appeared. With less acetylene and more oxigen the explosion is much more powerful, but with less flames
I just wanted to write the same. When putting the carbide into a waterbowl, it is possible to calculate and use the exactly needed amount of carbide for the volume of the barrel.
cicindela sylvicola - The ratio of solids or liquids vaporize into gas is about 1:1000. so they would have needed only one little block. The lowest explosive mixture is already 2.3 volume percent Ethine (Acetylene) to air. Over 82% Vol, it is not explosive any more and just burns off. Best result is with 38% Vol of Ethine, which is 190 liters in a 500 l barrel. So 190 liters equals to 190.000 ml divided by 1000 (gas -solid- ratio) is 190 cubic centimeters , which is a cube with sides 5,7 cm long. So roughly calculated they would have used a chunk as big as a baseball for best results. -- but I forgot if the ratio is on air or oxigen. If the calculation is on air, oxigen rougly only makes 21% of the air, the amount of needed cabide would be even less. Like I said- all is really very roughly calculated. If anybody feels like, can calculate the perfect amount of needed carbide 😃✌️
@@paulpaulsen7777 and @Cicindela sylvicola: I'd almost say you must be from the Netherlands, where carbide shooting is an art, with that indepth knowledge. Guess you both, like me, are in for a scientifically optimized sequel of this video!
Best carbide video I have ever seen, and glad you're putting safety first. Did you know carbide rocketing is an art in the Netherlands around new year? They use traditional milk cans mainly, but also the occasional barrel. Usually they put safety last and accidents do happen.
When kids we found an old WW2 tank barrel in a junk yard so we made a welded breech-plug and filled it with carbide. We drilled a hole for an igniter and could fire beer bottles filled with concrete (wrapped in rags for a crude sabot). They would go like 800 meters. Was insane.
If anyone's in the states and looking to buy calcium carbide, know you can actually find it for sale online. The only caveat is the shipping requirements. Carbide can only be legally shipped using a very specific (and slow, can take up to 6 weeks to travel coast to coast) ground based usps service, and you have to be sure the quantity you order is within the legal limit and properly declare what's in the shipping box.
Reaction for anyone interested: CaC2 (Note how Carbon is NOT in a +IV or -IV but instead a -I oxidation state ---> very unstable) CaC2 + 2 H2O ---> Ca(OH)2 + C2H2 Calciumhydroxide is a base, therefore the solution will react basic: Ca(OH)2 + H2O ---> 2OH- + Ca2+ + H2O (H2O is twice in this equation because it does react with the Calcium hydroxide in order to free the ionic bond between Ca ions and Hydroxide ions.) For good measure, complete burning of C2H2: 2 C2H2 + 5 O2 ---> 4 CO2 + 2 H2O
Justin Koenig Hey man you.. you just gotta go away cuz real expertise is never shown in RUclips Comments. Just a bunch of armchair experts that are too stupid to understand that they are stupid. So yeah.. just go back to the obviously more worldly background from wence you came! 😂😂
A friend of mine was working on a sysmic survey crew. One day he bet them he could put a 5 gl. Bucket over the drill hole , sit on it , and when they blew the charge it would only lift him up 3 or 4 ft. When they detonated the dynamite he blacked out from the G-force ! Going up . And when he came to he was above the tree tops coming down . he broke both ankles and dislocated his shoulder . we still call him THE ROCKETEER !
Love how much free space you have around you to do all of that cool stuff! I remember me, brothers, and friends doing all kinds of crazy things but here in eastern Ohio we use to have a lot of space around us but as farms had to close down and their land was sold off, more and more development is preventing us from doing what you guys are. ...awww the good ol' days and so enjoy them while they last because it's guaranteed they won't last for long according to how quickly things are being developed
One set of my grandparents were from the soft coal country in Southern Illinois. being poor they didn’t have money for 4th of July fireworks. But they did have carbide for the miners lamps. The thing to do was to put a piece of carbide in a plate with some water. Then put an upside down bucket on top with one side propped up on a rock, so they could throw a match in. The tricky part was not getting hit by the bucket because you were so close.
You remind me of the boys in the next door farm. They also make a lot of noise but its all good because it is the sound of kids having good clean fun. I loved the dog too.
We used to do this when I was a teenager but we filled the barrel with loose hay for the gas to ignite at a slower rate and act more like a propellant than an explosive. Then it was a matter of running as fast as possible to avoid the cops.
I wonder, if you dig a small hole the width of the barrel, and set it down maybe a foot if it would act like the barrel of a gun to contain the energy, and give the barrel a larger impulse and go higher. A lot of the gas escapes out of the sides as soon as the barrel lifts up a little bit and isn't as efficient.
So I've watched all of your videos does that mean I can now be in your space program? Perhaps a fixing wings to the side of the barrel and giving it a pointed nose would help you get into space yeah?
In Malaysia, we use this carbide and blow it like a canon during Ramadhan Month and Eid eve. We built that canon by using thick bamboo, metal pipe, concrete pipe
It is calcium carbide, not carbide. Very big difference. They also neglect to mention the fact it produces acetylene gas, very low flash point, highly reactive.
I just bought some of this stuff to get rid of the moles, you don't light it though the gas is supposed to kill them, mind you, I think I might try and light it and blow the fookers up.
And I though *I* was old! :) ... I had a tiny generator that worked from friction of the bicycle wheel and a small lantern bulb light ... we found it on a trashed bike in the Town Dump, and all it needed was a new bulb.
Hey guys!!! I invite you watch our new cool experiment in original with ENGLISH SUBTITLES on our main channel: ruclips.net/video/puY9XM041S8/видео.html
I freaking love how there is a delay you see the acetylene gas light and then there's that brief second which is always a b**** and you realize this may have been a bad idea and then that 9g push hits you and you're just along for the ride baby
My ouncle played with this thing too, but he cut off the bottom of a fire exstinguisher, put in the carbide, than waited until it filled with gas and than fired it so it flew down the street.
Very cool video. Rig the corroborator of a lawnmower engine so that it can work at any angle. Then weld two chained iron balls onto the blades of its blades. Start it via remote control in a tear down building.
Sink the barrel into a perfectly fitting hole, so that the propulsion is not lost sideways. This way, much more of the force will go into propelling the barrel up. Hopefully much higher.
Did that once with three sticks of old dynamite with a very heavy old barrel. The barrel split and flew 50 yards and the top went up almost out of sight. We were lucky not to get cleaved longway with the top, as we didn't see the first one fly.
If you were to have the 55 gal drum placed into a slightly smaller cylindrical container open end up, with the carbide and water in tbe bottom of that, you would harness multiples of tbe blast energy which translates to far higher altitudes if not considerably quieter reports, as that which was escaping immediately out from under the drum is now being converted to mechanical energy. a trade off.
Without a doubt me and all my friends from work laughed so hard at this video we have people coming down the stairs to see what was going on it's a good video and fun to watch period always a day brightener
If you have a airtight seal at bottom around lip of barrel like a plastic bag with a small amount of water in it it will go much higher, you are getting pressure leakage from there and if you crush the carbide into a powder it will react faster
I used to do this on the black oil-dirt topped road in front of my country home near Kilgore, TX. Except mine was a smaller version: a soup can upside down on top of a cherry bomb. Not as powerful, but the can would go about 30-40 feet in the air. It was fairly loud, too. Fun!
They are making acetylene gas. This used to be a common thing in the United States; Cities would have large concrete tanks and calcium carbide would mixed with water and the resulting gas would flow through pipes to homes. More than one house was blown up by stoves powered this way, so it was abandoned....
From wikipedia: "Calcium carbide is sometimes used as source of acetylene gas, which is a ripening agent similar to ethylene.[20] However, this is illegal in some countries as, in the production of acetylene from calcium carbide, contamination often leads to trace production of phosphine and arsine" So if you want to live longer, better not to inhale those fumes...
