I had to use the 55mm as my only lens for a wedding last year. I was worried but those turned out to be some of my favorite photos. I was really surprised and impressed by it
The issue is that at 1.8 you're not going to be able to show how sharp the lenses are if the focal plane is so thin. I would do a follow up but I returned the 50mm 1.8. 😅 Maybe I'll do that in the future! Thank you for watching.
@@JackWoodhams Correct but that is usually where high quality lenses show their most dramatic benefit over cheaper alternatives (wide open sharpness for the area of image that is in focus). A lot of lenses sharpen up as you stop down (until you hit effects of dafraction). Thanks for the video!
@@ChringyTechTalk well the 55mm has some pretty terrible CA at 1.8. so maybe I'll cover that in the future. Lots of videos planned anyway and glad you enjoyed this one 🤘
Thanks, great samples and details! From your video I'd say that Zeiss 55mm is way-way better in everything; it has to be chosen always (except the weight, sometimes you need an extra lens that weights nothing). P.S. I came to see how Zeiss 55mm behaves in portraits and to choose between it and Samyang 75mm, so I'm not 100% your client :)
Great videos! I’m enjoying your content around the A7III - I just recently bought one and it has been great. By any chance, do you have any recommendations on “wide lenses”? I’m still confused about the “crop” around APSC lenses - but I have been seeing a lot of people buying TAMRON ones for the A7III
Thank you so much, I'll be sharing some more soon! So if you haven't subscribed please do 🙏 If you use an APSC lens, you'll get vignetting around the edges and need to use APSC mode. A good wide angle for the A7III is this: amzn.to/3Z6N3Xo
Using this lens for street photography where you have to capture the moments the Zeiss 55mm continue focus never fails and about the 1.8 sharpness it's again the 55mm Zeiss the winner been even today one of the sharpest lens wide open ever made...
The quality is pretty similar. The point is if you were just planning to post on Instagram I doubt anyone would be able to tell the difference given both lenses are sharp.
Did the results of this video surprise you?

nah, had a fe50mm 1.8 for 4 years, its sharpness at f1.8 is not that good with 55mm.
@@TRI-xe3xw the 55mm is definitely better for a variety of reasons.

I do love the 55mm, it's my go-to lens! Was very surprised by these results though. The autofocus on the 50mm 1.8 is the biggest deal-breaker for me!
@@JackWoodhams I've never had a chance to mess with the sony but I never thought the image quality would that similar
@@tbeiber09 shocked me as well!
I would expect them to be more similar at f/5.6. You should show them both wide open at f/1.8 and also bokeh results. That would be interesting!

I only have the Sony 50mm f/1.8 and its great in my opinion. Great value too.
100% the results here show just how good it is!
Hello Jack, does your 50mm have its firmware updated? Thank you
I dont have the lens anymore so can't check. But if was bought this year so assume so.
@@JackWoodhams thank you!

There is literally nothing close about them 😆
