Really great RougaReview! I remember speculation in the early 2010s about B&M's ability to transform stand-ups into sitdowns, with a lot of push back given due to the train's different heartline. It was a big deal seeing the concept turn into reality, and then watching further stand-ups receive conversions. I have fond memories of Mantis with it being my first stand-up, but I think it's a perfectly fun coaster with the floorless trains, so I don't really miss it all that much.
This ride is so underrated. It’s pretty intense, for me not nearly as rough as people make it out to be, and has one of the coolest inversions with the inclined loops. Seriously, a good ride for Cedar Point
I tried the method you mentioned concerning the B&M stands up and Mantis was still much rougher than Riddler's Revenge. With CP having a dive coaster, IF the coaster still has a lot of life left in it yet, this would make a great coaster for Michigan's Adventure or some other neglected park.
As someone who loves standups (Via your method), mantis looked excellent. I haven't been to cedar point yet, but I wish that when parks converted their standup coasters to floorless coasters, they would keep one train a standup train and one train a floorless train. Therefore, guests are able to choose their riding position and experience. i rode patriot this year at california's great america, and while it was a fun, smooth ride, i found it to be a bit bland in the sitting position. i feel like as a standup coaster i would enjoy it a lot more, but i can understand why parks choose to convert them. My favorite B&M period is green lantern (just want to note this, i havent done any of the gigas and the only hypers ive ridden are nitro, candymonium and apollo's chariot) because of the absolutely bonkers positive g-force (positives are my favorite force period, excluding sensations like pure speed, whip, stuff like that). I even prefer lantern over riddlers revenge as green lantern sustains the forces a lot more in the valleys, and additionally has more intense inversions. sorry for this little comment turned essay, i just really love stand up coasters.
It would be a top rated ride at 90% of amusement parks. But it's literally across the path from a perennial contender for Best Steel Coaster, so it's going to be quite underwhelming in that park.

I definitely preferred it as Mantis. I rode it over the years, pre Rougarou, and it was better. While I'm not a fan of the old B&M over the shoulder restraints, i still feel the overall experience was better as a stand up.
Fortunate to say that my very first visit to CP was Mantis opening year and it was mind blowing. I remember how powerful it was and it never lost that over the years. My first rougaru ride was in 2018 and I don't think I've been back on it since. Don't feel the need to
I’m one of those weird people who really likes stand up coasters. I get why the GP doesn’t but I am sad when one goes or gets converted. Mantis was a great ride - I haven’t ridden Rougarou but I suspect the layout isn’t as good as it was designed as a stand up. I’m glad they kept it going instead of scrapping it, but I’d like to see them retrofit the old stand ups with the new Pipeline style trains. The only issue is that those trains are designed around negative G’s where the old stand ups were all about the positives.
I actually have only been to Cedar Point once and it was years ago back when this was still Mantis, and I actually really liked this coaster & found it super underrated! The only other standup I have ridden was Iron Wolf at Six Flags Great America and that was AWFUL so this ride was a masterpiece in comparison lol
@@CanobieCoaster It’s not even the new trains. Every floorless I’ve been on is shaky. I think the center of gravity is too high for the wheel base and it leads to shifting on directional changes.
I find this coaster underrated. In the front I got 2 airtime pops and I find it smooth. My aunt rode it as mantis and when she rode it with me as rougarou the headbanging was terrible for her. She had a knot in her head, and it's a running joke between us lol. I'm guessing she preferred mantis because she's not a guy and doesn't have the same groin pain that us men get haha
Rougarou is one of my least favorite B&Ms I've ridden. It has a great first half, but everything after the corkscrew isn't memorable for me. Rougarou would be a top tier coaster at most other parks, but at Cedar Point, it's overshadowed by most the other major coasters there. I don't know if I would've liked it more back when it was Mantis, but even then I could've had similar thoughts. I just have higher standards for B&M because they're my favorite manufacturer.
I rode it a couple weeks ago and had the same thought- the first half was really good and the second half was pretty uncomfortable. The setting is underrated as a big portion of it is over water.
Mantis is my most ridden coaster and a top 10 coaster for me. If you can't do a calf raise, then the restraint isn't in the right position. The first drop, twist after the inclined loop, twist into the midcourse, drop off the midcourse, and one of the twists in the twister section all gave airtime. To keep one's ears off of the restraint is a goal to be achieved during each ride on B&M loopers
I rode Rougarou once a year after it opened. I banged my ears so hard on the headrest going through the corkscrew/flatspin I got off the ride with my ears ringing, which has never happened to me before. I vowed to never ride it again. As Mantis it was a once a year ride for me. Standing up didn't really bother me much. I agree this coaster won't have the longevity in the park as other coasters. I can see it gone in the next 10 years.
I do prefer it as Rougarou. I didn't get many rides on it as Mantis as I would tend to avoid it for how uncomfortable it was and for other rides in the park. But now I will do it at least once per visit, partly because of the short line, but it is also a decent coaster that is overshadowed at Cedar Point. At most other parks, it would be a top-tier coaster, but it's kind of lost in the mix at CP. I would say it's days are numbered but there is still the Snake River Falls plot and the island to expand to that will save this for a while still
I rode mantis a bunch, and only once as Rougarou, and they're honestly about the same overall "rating" to me but for different reasons. I thought the ride worked better as a standup, as the dead turns you describe were much less so while standing which made it seem more like a complete ride. It is however an improvement in smoothness despite it still being one of the rougher floorless models. I put both at a 5/10 because in either iteration I'm really not much of a classic looper guy and never have been, but it's not exactly a bad ride either. I've skipped it every time after riding it once because there's just a ton of far superior rides at CP lol
My dream would be for this to get sent to Michigan's Adventure someday. It'd instantly become the #2 ride in the park, and you could even keep the water setting if you wanted to.
Rougarou beat me up as much as Mantis did. Now, if Cedar point put comfort collars or vest restraints on this ride, it would be a great ride. If this ride does get removed in the future, I could see it being relocated to another park that could use it.
The first drop and loop are great. I rode this back in 2019 and the later half beat me up. I don’t know if it was just having bad day, but I wasn’t interested in a re-ride.
I liked Mantis more, but I'm saying that from only one ride on Mantis in 2014. I didn't know the technique, but I was still quite comfortable riding it. And I was more susceptible to headbanging then, but Mantis didn't give me any. Rougarou can if I'm not very careful, so it does seem worse for headbanging. After my first visit, I had Mantis ranked ahead of Magnum, which I got a very bad ride on.
I think I liked it more as Mantis. I never really had a discomfort issue on stand-ups and the second half has much better forces with a higher heartline, or center of gravity.
This ride was so insanely rough when I rode it back in 2018. It was super uncomfortable but to be fair the entire train was legit empty so that probably made it a lot worse
Oh, you never rode this as Mantis? I never had issues with it but that was years back. I found Riddler's a lot more vibration and headache inducing. Maybe it got worse as the years went on. I didn't mind it as Rougarou other than a couple head bangs, but better restraints would have solved that. It's a shame, same with Firebird.
This is a dark horse coaster in this park, could be top three almost anywhere else but due to the quality and quantity at CP it gets overlooked. I always thought if it were replaced it would surely be moved rather than scrapped.
I liked the Mantis color scheme much more and the Mantis name is memorable. The R-something color scheme is bland and most times I don't even remember what it's name is much less how to pronounce it. I'm indifferent to the replacement of the stand up trains with the floorless trains but I would expect a reduction in thrills. The.second half is certainly designed to be ridden standing up. Standing up on a coaster is intimidating by itself, so it doesn't have to go that fast. And, if it does lots of "topsy turvy" maneuvers, standing up would amplify the effect. And one other thing: the loop... is a very large loop. 😉
Maybe I'm off the mark here, but you have less strength and stability in your neck when you stick your head forward, making it more likely to bounce your head around. Unless your neck is just weak in general and you don't have stability in the normal sitting position?
Unrelated? The reason that people stick their head forward is because it gets your head away from the restraints. Stability and strength don't have much to do with it when you're traveling at speed and getting jostled around.
@@itsme123669 I don't stick my head forward. I also don't bang my head around. Everyone that I see sticking their head forward bangs their head around. There has to be some correlation.
I wish they would put B&Ms new vest restraints on this thing. It could be a great coaster if it wasn't banging my head on the damn shoulder restraints.
I think the long term for this ride isn't going to last too much longer. I think either a B&M flyer, a 4th Dimension coaster, or a GCI/Gravity Group wooden coaster would be an ideal replacement!
Hot take. Are 4D coasters and flyers still being built even? Not sure that the plot is big enough for a CP sized woodie. I think an RMC Raptor would be amazing in that footprint.
Rougarou is good. Actually, let me rephrase. Rougarou is great! I love how intense the first half is. The first drop gives good airtime, the loops are all awesome. And the inclined loop is fantastic. Sadly rougarou pretty much sucks after the mcbr since it's noticeably shakier and kind of boring.
I don’t think you would have liked Mantis more honestly. Even with the technique your described, the post-trim section was even more dull standing up in my opinion. Mantis was extra terrible compared to other stand ups and had gnarly rattle too. It was wildly uncomfortable in every way. Rougarou gets way too much hate. It’s a very pleasant ride all around, and butter smooth imo.
I have had the displeasure of experiencing this multiple times this season. I LOVE the layout but I cannot stand the trains with the old B&M restraints. It is headbang city on basically all the elements no matter where you sit. If they gave this vest restraints or just a regular sit down train with lap bars this could be an easy top 5 looper in the park.
@@CanobieCoaster I have really big ears so even leaning forwards the restraints bash my cartilage unfortunately. On the plus side, the crew on Rougarou consistently has fantastic operations, often running three trains even on weekdays.
Since cedar point doesn’t have much space, I can see this and raptor get removed in the next 10 to 15 years Edit I wrote this comment before the end of the video
@CanobieCoaster i think most of those B&M inverts are probably safe. I rode great bear at hersheypark this year and it had the longest line in the park.
I wish B&M could have come up with a 3-wide vest restraint standup train instead. Oddly though, I've come to like Firebird whereas Apocalypse just rubbed in the loss of KD Shockwave.
Even if many found it uncomfortable, at least Mantis's forces were unique in Ohio. As Rougarou, it's just an awkward B&M middle child that has neither the power of Raptor nor the grace of Gatekeeper.
Mantis was painful but still kind of neat. Rougaru does little to nothing for me and is way too head bangy. None of the B&M loopers do it for me (Dominator, Scream, etc.) The only one that's kinda cool is Kraken.
Couldn't agree more with every single point you made in your video. I know people saying it's not rough but like you said thag second half into the corkscrew you just get headbanging and that's not really enjoyable
IMHO yes, it is better now. However, it's just not that special at Cedar Point. At a lesser park it could be one of the best rides, but at Cedar Point it's like 10th.
That parks convert stand-up coasters to floorless ones is understandable. But it's kind of a shame that stand-ups are becoming a dying breed at this point.
Banshee/Mantis/Rougaru is rubbish beyond the 3rd inversion. It’s as if Stengel(?)/B&M finished up the experience with a spaghetti bowl of head thrashing just because. It should have been demolished not refurbished and therefore replaced with Valravn on the same site.
I really hope it's either this, Mine Ride, or Corkscrew that goes. I'm being Rougaru will be the first of those three because Mine Ride fills a family niche and Corkscrew takes up like no space. An RMC Raptor would be perfect in Rougaru's plot.
They had lots of constraints to deal with, and one of those is the width of the track. The vest style restraints are wider and there's no way they could fit 4 abreast. CP probably didn't want to take a big step back in capacity.
@@itsme123669 Interesting, thanks. I would have just left it the way it was then. I got zero headbanging when it was Mantis. That said, I can't stand (ahem), stand up coasters, and I guess they knew that many others felt the same way. Even Riddler's Revenge made me ill after one ride cause it was vibrating my head the whole time. I honestly nearly puked that day and didn't ride it again (was a back row ride). Of course after half an hour I did Tatsu a few times LOL (that one is amazing in the back row, the very last one).
I rode it when it was Mantis. Worse coaster at the park for me---uncomfortable, head-banging, rough. I had a headache for an hour afterwards. I hated it, and I told the management that it ruined my afternoon there. Good riddance.
@@CanobieCoaster I have not. However, since you suggest that some of the ride is bangy enough to have to keep your head forward, I probably won't want to. People have different tolerances for roughness. I have very little. But I always appreciate your analyses and critique.
As a stand-up it had that gimmick going for it. I remember it being pretty fun, but also left me feeling a little queasy after the second half. As a floorless, it runs faster as the trims on the first drop are disabled... so it's forces for the first half are pretty good. I think I prefer it as a floorless, and I rather like it. I much prefer it to the 2 newer B&Ms... Gatekeeper and Valravn. Personally, Gatekeeper is amongst the lowest tier of Cedar Point coasters. It provides great scenery, but the ride experience is lacking severely.

I prefer to do that since my neck is thinner than my head, so when I'm shifted side-to-side, I have more clearance with the restraint.
I wish they would put B&Ms new vest restraints on this thing. It could be a great coaster if it wasn't banging my head on the damn shoulder restraints.
I wouldn't mind seeing those on older B&M loopers.
I think the long term for this ride isn't going to last too much longer. I think either a B&M flyer, a 4th Dimension coaster, or a GCI/Gravity Group wooden coaster would be an ideal replacement!
W
Hot take. Are 4D coasters and flyers still being built even? Not sure that the plot is big enough for a CP sized woodie. I think an RMC Raptor would be amazing in that footprint.
@@itsme123669 Maybe a Vekoma flyer if Siren's Curse does well for them.
Those would likely be upgrades.
@@CanobieCoaster Maybe for Cedar Point's next major coaster!
Since they changed it to a floor less not only is it more comfortable, but also almost never has a line so can be rode multiple times a day
Nice!
For me.. yes it was better as a stand up. Much more novel, less lines, equal amount of headbanging 😅... least IMO of course
I really wish I could have tried it as a stand up.
The corkscrew and s-hill are good at the end, but most of it is meh.
Stand up was ok...but like the floorless better. Not as a headbanger. This is a good coaster to give variety
That's fair.
@@CanobieCoaster I did love stand up..should use vest like valraven or gatekeeper...bring that back with those.
I like Green Lantern, whose layout looks similar. But Rougarou seems more widely liked.
PLEASE review Iron Dragon
I will down the road.
Have you tried leaning forwards? That is my most effective technique with a lot of loopers with OTSRs.
@@CanobieCoaster I have really big ears so even leaning forwards the restraints bash my cartilage unfortunately. On the plus side, the crew on Rougarou consistently has fantastic operations, often running three trains even on weekdays.
Since cedar point doesn’t have much space, I can see this and raptor get removed in the next 10 to 15 years
Edit I wrote this comment before the end of the video
@@IcyEvolution-m9y Raptor ain't going anywhere. I could see Rougarou out by 28/30 tho
I hope Raptor is safe.
@CanobieCoaster i think most of those B&M inverts are probably safe. I rode great bear at hersheypark this year and it had the longest line in the park.
I wish the stand up trains could still run and they could throw one on every now and then.
That would be cool, but I imagine those were scrapped or sent to Carowinds for parts.
I wish B&M could have come up with a 3-wide vest restraint standup train instead. Oddly though, I've come to like Firebird whereas Apocalypse just rubbed in the loss of KD Shockwave.
Why 3 wide?
@@CanobieCoasterI've heard B&M vest restraints require more width so they can't just stick them on their old coasters.
this ride is extremely intense
The inversions are wild.
@@CanobieCoaster especially at night during the halloweekends the ride is literally out of control lol
Even if many found it uncomfortable, at least Mantis's forces were unique in Ohio. As Rougarou, it's just an awkward B&M middle child that has neither the power of Raptor nor the grace of Gatekeeper.
It is more comfortable even if it is less unique.
Mantis was painful but still kind of neat. Rougaru does little to nothing for me and is way too head bangy. None of the B&M loopers do it for me (Dominator, Scream, etc.) The only one that's kinda cool is Kraken.
Their floorless coasters are usually decent.
Couldn't agree more with every single point you made in your video. I know people saying it's not rough but like you said thag second half into the corkscrew you just get headbanging and that's not really enjoyable
I have to ride defensively.
Roguru will go before ANY of their Arrows go, including the mine train.
It's possible an older Arrow could go, but those have lower height limits.
I love this rides layout but unfortunately as someone who's not particularly tall (~5'9) this ride causes a ton of head banging.
Can you lean forward to mitigate that?
IMHO yes, it is better now. However, it's just not that special at Cedar Point. At a lesser park it could be one of the best rides, but at Cedar Point it's like 10th.
I agree.
That parks convert stand-up coasters to floorless ones is understandable. But it's kind of a shame that stand-ups are becoming a dying breed at this point.
I will miss them.
I like the s-hills and corkscrew at the end, but a lot of the turns are meh.
I think B&M made a mistake with their floorless conversions by not using trains with vest restraints. Actually, a BIG mistake.
Vests would help some of their older loopers.
My least favorite coaster before riding night hawk at carowinds. That ride tried to assassinate me
I enjoy both.
I rode it when it was Mantis. Worse coaster at the park for me---uncomfortable, head-banging, rough. I had a headache for an hour afterwards. I hated it, and I told the management that it ruined my afternoon there. Good riddance.
Have you ridden it as Rougarou?
I've never found stand-ups more or less queasy. They can just be uncomfortable if ridden wrong.
This ride's corkscrew damn near gave me a concussion. I'll pass.
I lean forward in the second half to mitigate headbanging.
This ride sucks but at least it’s better than magnum
Hard disagree.
@@itsme123669 that’s fine but you’re wrong at least you can some what enjoy Rougarou magnum is a pile of hot garbage
