  • An Evening at Pops concert featuring conductor (and composer) John Williams and the Boston Pops Orchestra with special guest, pianist André Watts, broadcast on the Public Broadcasting System June 18, 1988. It begins with a wonderful piece of archival footage originally broadcast in 1963 in which conductor Leonard Bernstein introduces a 16-year-old Watts to a national audience for the first time during a Young People's Concert recorded Jan. 12, 1963 that aired on the CBS television network three days later on Jan. 15. This episode of Evening of Pops from 1988 marked the premiere of the 19th season of the concert series which ran on PBS from 1970 to 2005. At the end of the video, I have included a press photo for the concert that shows Watts with opera singer Frederica von Stade who was also featured that evening (a video of her performance can also be seen on this RUclips channel).

I met him once long ago. His obviously stupendous playing is a mere by-product of his giant humanity
