Best walk-through and explanation of the game I've seen so far. All the other videos over complicate and over explain everything. Most videos explaining how to play are not any less confusing or daunting than reading the rule book. This was simple and easy and now I have a grasp on not only how to play but how to teach it to others simply and easily so we can get to playing.

Yeah, I saw a couple of reviews and kept away from the game for long, simply for it being one type of game that needs a player crowd willing to invest on a longer term into it and a teacher who is quite apt in both rules and teaching said rules to the people in an engaging and comprehensible way. But when all these boxes are checked it ought to flow quite nicely - at least when starting from the 2nd generation game session onward. Apart from these negatives I like it quite the bit for what it is, though! 😇Also, thank you for the playthrough, it was very pleasant and motivating to watch!

His designs are absolutely brilliant, but I dislike the endgame of both Root and Oath. It feels unearned: multiple players get close and then effectively a vote is taken on who will be stopped and who will be allowed to win. If you *really* want to win, it seems to me that too much meta-analysis is needed.
Pax Pamir 2E felt better in this regard; even if a player is beaten in their obvious objective by other players working together, they can often still make some very clever plays, create chaos on the board, and emerge with an advantage over everyone else (or the attempt backfires horribly and they get completely wiped out). Either way, it feels more rewarding to me.
Maybe it's all in this one too and just I haven't played enough, I don't know.

Cole has a GDC talk titled "King Me: A Defense of Kingmaking in Board Game Design". He's definitely aware of it, but I think Oath handles it better than Root due to the lack of victory points and that it seems like an inherently more thematic and political game than Root (although my copy of Oath is still in shrink wrap, so I may not know what I'm talking about). I do think it depends on the group you're playing with though, closer friends are going to have more fun with that vote than strangers.

Oof I find TTS can be so tough to watch sometimes. The, overactive, camera swooping everywhere just as you’re looking at/reading something is frustrating .
I think the best way to do it is to setup saved camera positions with ctrl+number key the use shift+number key to cycle through them as needed - i.e one for each player board, a top down overview, a zoomed view of dice rolling area.. and then keep it as smooth/static as possible with the default being the top down overview shot.
We can see everyone’s cursors and it makes it feel more natural as if you’re looking at the game on the table.

That’s how it is with every complex board game. You have to play one rough and slow game first to teach all the players, and then the second game is when you actually start playing. Thankfully, Oath is a game that changes and adapts with each playthrough, so the first game will barely scratch the surface of what the game offers.

Hm, after watching it, I cant shake the feeling that they got lost in designing game mechanics as such, removed from anything relevant to progressing a game. Much of this feels complicated for complication's sake (or for the sake of being different from what others have done before) not because it adds something interesting or relevant to the gaming experience. At times it felt downright random like "and here is another mechanic" .... I get the feeling that they shouldve asked themselves more often "do we really need this for a good game, or is it just so it feels more complex?". As it stands it feels downright "unstructured".
Watching the different people react to the explanations I got the feeling that they just zoomed out after a veritable onslaught of information they couldnt possibly be asked to keep track of. This very much feels like a game you have to completely relearn from the ground up after shelving it for a few months, which I consider bad design.

Oath is actually a brilliant game. The reason things seem random and unnecessary is because you’re looking at each mechanic independently.
