Hey guys, Welcome back to Knifehog.com! Addison here and today I'll be reviewing a knife that is perfect for you military personnel: the CRKT M16 tactical folding knife.
Designed by Kit Carson, the CRKT M16 tactical folder is definitely the knife of choice among many active duty military personnel on duty overseas. This folder has an overall length of 9 ¼" with a closed length of 5.37", which makes this a little too big to be an EDC but is considerably portable to carry around on your belt or on the outside of a pack. The blade of this knife is about 4" long and is made of AUS 8 stainless steel. This means that the blade is strong enough to cut through things like hard plastic and even make deeps cuts into stone walls. This knife has a tanto style blade with a slim plain edge that could be used to open letters and a triple-point serrated edge for cutting thick rope, cords and clothing. The blade of this knife also features a non-reflective bead-blast finish. The knife's handle has a desert camo pattern finish with glass filled nylon scales that blend in perfectly with sand and dirt. The handle is fitted with liner locks for a secure fit for the blade when it is closed and houses a very durable pommel, which is exceptionally powerful in tactical or combat situations. A 4 position carry pocket clip is included on the handle as well. Just like other Kit Carson designed tactical folders, the M16 features the AutoLAWKS safety mechanism, which automatically turns the folder into a fixed blade when it is opened and locked. This knife includes two flippers on either side of the blade, which results in a true hilt when the blade is open, and the dual ambidextrous thumb studs with checkered surfaces provide instant access in any circumstance while you are out in the field.
Although this is a folding knife, the CRKT M16 is the perfect tactical military knife that can handle tough jobs like a fixed blade knife. This knife's durable blade and artfully designed handle make it the perfect tactical knife to manage a range of heavy duty tasks. The blade can easily be deployed with either of the two flippers on the blade as well as the thumb studs. The AutoLAWKS safety system also helps turn this seemingly simple folder into a hard core fixed blade knife. The only drawbacks of this knife are that the pocket clip, although advertised as a full 4 position clip, should not really be used as a tip-down carry as the blade has been known to come open in pant pockets when carried this way. Also, the scales on this blade are a bit smooth but you can still keep a solid grip on it due to the Carson flippers and round cut outs on the handle.
We here a Knifehog give this knife 3.5 out of 5 stars.

I picked this knife up about a year or so ago. Absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE it. Yes, it's a big knife, but I haven't had an problems carrying it as an EDC. I have literally carried it every day since I bought it. It came in super sharp, and I keep a razor like edge on it w/ the Spyderco Tri-Angle Sharpmaker.
I haven't found anything I couldn't cut through including rope, plastic drink bottles, aluminum cans, wire, it's also great at chopping through wood. Like Addison said, do NOT carry it tip down, although you could, and use that as a fast open since the pommel catches on your pocket... The blade WILL come open in your pocket, and you WILL, at the very least, put holes in your pocket, if not your thigh. I am right handed, but carry it in my left pocket due to it's size. It is uncomfortable if you put it in the pocket with anything else, wallet or phone... so if you have your pockets full all the time, this may not be the knife for you.
I would give this a 4/5 stars, but that is just my personal opinion. the only reason I don't give it 5/5 is because of it's size. Although CRKT does offer smaller versions that are similar in appearance to this.
I did have the pocket clip screws start to come loose on me and it was a quick fix with a little thread lock. Haven't had any issues with it since then.
And a personal story to share, I have an 8 yr old daughter, and we own a few goats. We had the goats tied off on a fence to some 3/8 inch rope, about 20 foot. My daughter went to walk past the goat, and somehow got tangled up in the rope, it wrapped around both her legs. when she screamed it scared the goat, and it tried to run, pulling the rope tight. I was about 10' feet away when this all happened, and without even realizing what I did, I pulled this knife out, and opened it and sliced the rope with one quick motion, like it was butter and I had a light saber. Other than a small red mark around her leg, serious injury was avoided, and I'm very happy with being an owner of this fine blade.

No, not a salesman, just a guy who loves his knife. I'm looking at a Benchmade next.
Great knife. I will defiantly buy one.
You are absolutely right Adam Hall. That is a bit of a problem with this knife and I guess we accidentally cited the wrong carry position in which this occurs. Thank you for the correction.
CRKT stands for "Columbia River Knife and Tool", but we here at Knifehog tend to refer to the name as "Cricket" instead of pronouncing the acronym letter by letter.
Not tip down tip up is when it could open.
Hmmm Cricket..
"Cricket" Are you fucking serious...
Right! Say it right or dot say it all. C-R-K-T.
Cricket? 😂😂😂
It's "c r k t" not cricket
Christian Boehm You are correct, it is pronounced C R K T and not "cricket". If you take a look at some of our newer CRKT knife reviews you'll notice that we've begun to pronounce it as such. Thank you for your comment.
