껌둥이(ggamdoongee) on its own is actually not a bad word. ~둥이 is something that has a characteristics of cuteness. For example if you said 껌둥이 puppy, its just means a cute black puppy. But if you say that to a person, now it becomes a racial slur.
@@Tricksngiggles not everyone in Korea thinks how we do. We think of it has a word you should definitely not say. They think of it as whore or bitch u shouldn’t say it but if someone ask u what it is ur gonna say it
Yes but, he was trying to explain what the word means in English. The direct equivalent to the n word, he wasn’t trying to be offensive but trying to explain
For those blasting that guy for just straight up saying the N word - the average Korean won’t have the concept of the wording “the N word” because that’ term (eg the F word, the C word, etc.) is purely English. There’s no alternative. Yes, he is aware that it’s a bad word, but his understanding or connection to it is not the same as those who come from English speaking or non-Asian cultures. Most know now that the N word is really bad, but that’s only if they’re quite up with current/American culture, which you can’t expect EVERYONE in a non-American/Western country to be. So stop blasting him. He was just trying to explain the best way he knew how in a VERY different context to America in a homogeneous culture.
To asians, the n word holds no value as yes there exists a word but racism towards black people is rare as black people are rare, literally noone would call em that except for some boomers or smth
I actually appreciated that man for being direct and saying it. I prefer a person to be truthful to me than beating around the bush or try to spin the obvious negative word into a positive because you don't feel comfortable saying it.
@@jjan2383 He doesn't. Its the same thing with The asian slur in America. Most actual asians do not even know the word exist. Some who know doesn't even know the historical context. In fact, There was one time a blog/video of a asian person reading racist things toward asian Americans. The asian person didn't deem it as racist. Meanwhile, the American next to her was calling out that it was racist. Its not that asian ppl can choose.. its the fact they literally don't know.. Asians should not be held at the same standard in knowledge as asian Americans.
Even positive stereotypes are racist. It's called "benevolent racism". Like to assume a black guy's a good basketball player, or a black girl knows how to dance or "talk cool". Like... no, I'm not dancing for you, I don't like that rapper, and I'm not speaking in "ebonics" with you.
Thanks, I just learned a new concept! Never know that is called “benevolent racism” but I am aware of this type of stereotype. For Asian people will think about things like “good at math” “get A+” or “eat rice” - these are not negative (ok maybe “good at studying” has a hidden meaning of this person is not good at socializing and less attractive)
Junshu Liu id like to say although they sound positive they come from negative meanings. When you generalize or fetishsize a race, you dehumanize them. With the stereotype of asians being smart, it disregards the actual hard work people put in to get where they are.
I agree, but most Koreans find this concept alien. We take positive stereotype as compliment(Koreans are good at math), or if a stereotype is something shared by Koreans too we find it non-offensive(i.e Koreans are workaholics). Not saying this is right, but when a Korean blurts out an uncomfortable statement based on stereotype, it's more out of ignorance than to offend.
@@sson9792 actually He was scared to say it because the word 흑 (black) in korean is derogatory when it comes to skin color. not the same as english where black is just a normal word. that’s why he was hesitant
As I'm beginning to learn Korean, this video will prove to come in handy of I ever come across an unpleasant local in my future visit. I'm not confrontational but I think it's very important to know about these terms so that you don't blindly take it as a compliment or pet name.
Jigaboo John there are countries who have way badder racist words or acts towards black people. I’m pretty sure Koreans took it over from American movies or rap.
As a korean, I'm pretty sure that if you visit my country, Almost every koreans doesn't say to you "n word". Every country has a racist word and every country has a mad person. Just ignore that person. Korean hates that person too.
Jigaboo John I don’t recall her saying anything about what you are implying... her point was that all countries have their own terms and racist slurs, not just Korea...
Jigaboo John so you’re saying we have the right to insult Asians or anyone if they’re out of their country...ridiculous. My point was that we could literally Insult every American if we did like you said(white or black), cause yes negro is insulting it was used during slavery. And also what I meant about “white people came to do the same damn thing in Africa” I meant that they came to impose rules in a country that isn’t their own.. so yes we can and finally have the right to do that too, but in a polite way.
I see some people calling out the korean guy who said nigger. Yeah obviously it isn't okay but I think in this context it isn't horrible because she did ask for a meaning and I'm sure he was just trying to be honest by saying the word which would give her the meaning at best. Except we use Nuna for everyone, not just black people. Nuna is not the same as sis, because it is an honorific, aka a form of respect. It’s been used since ancient times in Korea. In fact, it is seen as very disrespectful if you don’t call a girl who is older than you Nuna or Eonnie. The term “Black Nuna” however can be seen as disrespect, just like she explained in the video. I have never used it, and always correct my other Korean mates when they use it. The word Nuna, however has nothing to do with cultural appropriation and has a total different meaning and use than sistah.

As a Asian myself, I was taught that black skin are for poor people or bad people. They said it’s look ugly. Almost every Asian people want to change their skin tones. So, People will say to them like “ You skin look so white and pretty, You must be rich...etc”. I’ve had enough experience bc I have brown skin. My friends or even some of my family always wanted me use whitening products. I sometimes got called “ n-word” in my country language. I think racism in Asian are still high.
@@joaotanekosy not taught at all. It’s base on you experience every days life. When Chinese people came to live in my country very long time ago and some of them have white skinned. And we wanted to look like them cuz they are rich and I would say pretty. And of course Hollywood movies.
On old times in Western countries it was the same, rich people had clearer skin because they stay inside, while poor people worked in the field so they had darker skin tones. Nowadays is more common for average people to have clear skin tones as people work inside factories or buildings and reach people go to the beach to tan, so concept has been reversed.
@@GUTS2000s That's some kind of insight thinking. As Chinese, I'd say in East Asia, discrimination against balck people are not high. Basicly people historically prefer lighter skin color bcz tanned means outside working and lower social class. At least Chinese people in general have a basicly POSITIVE view of black people for Hollywood movies and NBA. So a well mannered African American person probably feels very good when being in China if he is not poor. But being poor in develping countries is no good. In China people only care about two things: Family and money. So real African people may get more obvious discrimation against for being African (being poor). And another thing is American street culture, lets say Outgoing, in East Asia this kind of behavior would look being a ponk or a dangrous person, people will react to be stay away from such people. But in general Americans won't really learn Asian reginal cultures and being respectful, so it's like a common thing. And I once met a real African guy, he was a christan and was really well behavior and looked gentleman, he probably had a nice time when in China. This works also for Japan and South Korea. And Japanese are more shy and quite.
I'm Asian, too. Almost all of them want to change their skin? You and the people around you may, but me and the people around me don't. I've never complained about my skin color.
This is how it should be portrayed in the media. Instead they put us against each other, playing oppression olympics. We are all inherently different and must accept one another in this big planet.

@@Tricksngiggles not giving excuses but he might have known that the korean term was a slur or offensive term but not the n word.
To asians, the n word holds no value as yes there exists a word but racism towards black people is rare as black people are rare, literally noone would call em that except for some boomers or smth
this explanation is so wishy washy. first ur saying he doesn’t see it the same way as us then u say he knows it’s wrong
@@jjan2383 or maybe your reading comprehension skills are a bit wishy washy…
Periodt
Thanks, I just learned a new concept! Never know that is called “benevolent racism” but I am aware of this type of stereotype. For Asian people will think about things like “good at math” “get A+” or “eat rice” - these are not negative (ok maybe “good at studying” has a hidden meaning of this person is not good at socializing and less attractive)
Junshu Liu id like to say although they sound positive they come from negative meanings. When you generalize or fetishsize a race, you dehumanize them. With the stereotype of asians being smart, it disregards the actual hard work people put in to get where they are.
jiwon hong makes sense
I agree, but most Koreans find this concept alien. We take positive stereotype as compliment(Koreans are good at math), or if a stereotype is something shared by Koreans too we find it non-offensive(i.e Koreans are workaholics). Not saying this is right, but when a Korean blurts out an uncomfortable statement based on stereotype, it's more out of ignorance than to offend.

It's just a word that means something else in Korean, but sounds like the N word to English speakers.

I think racism in Asian are still high.
why they taught that?

My mom is black and she really likes korean culture, language, cusine and etc. And whenever she talks about her wish to visit Korea I get worried about anyone treating her badly. I always say "If you want to go, I'll go with you" just so I can stand up for her or anything.
Omg yass gurl that's the same for me but its the other way around I want to go to korea
Ive been to Korea with my 2 black sisters, im black myself. I've gotten some dirty looks but that happens in my own country too. I haven't experienced any blatant racism or anything, so from experience I think its okay to go. My sisters have been twice before and have never experienced racism over there. Tell me if you want to know more about my experience! I'll send you my insta or something!

@@SAKJ6853 thats just disgusting. Please dont ever get "used to it" people need to be taught not to be racist ❤
@@cheezkake6334 we all get dirty looks. I wear crazy ass clothes with lots of colors, I get dirty looks all the time. Sometimes humans just stare at people that look different.

This was so interesting to watch. She’s so brave for doing that, I could literally never do that. And she’s sooooooo gorgeous
정말 맞는 말씀이네요. 앞으로는 절대 사용하지 않겠습니다.
it gives me so much hope to see koreans recognizing racism towards black people and acknowledging that it is wrong. the younger generation is more tolerant to foreigners and i trust that they will play a role in ending racial discrimination in korea. just seeing how upset some of the people were, really touched my heart. :')
that group of two guys and a girl, you can see on their faces how it's hard for them to explain or tell what these words mean bcos they know it might hurt her... one of the guy even said sorry when he wasn't the one who even said that word and the guy in gray was about to fight "who the f***".... these kind of people still exist
As a person of colour this video brought me to tears as well with the group on the two boys and two girls. So sweet and it gives me hope ❤️
When she asked "Do you have the same term for white people?"
This sentence rose thousands of thoughts and questions.
Certainly, derogatory words for white people in Korea have nothing to do with skin color.
in fact....
korean say white girl(when viewed as a sexual object)
as "white horse or white pony"
then it's mean... sexual motion like horse riding
of course, this is something wrong.
but it is not only discrimination black people
they were botta find that person ad throw hands. respect.

@@Janiiya HUUHHH you're such an angry person its actually sort of embarrassing
Josie wow... Are you okay? Where exactly do you get angry from what I wrote... clearly you have some unresolved issues, maybe take some classes on internet etiquette?
Again, you’re excused.

Most East Asians can't speak English that well as their own mother tongue is mostly used used higher education and everything like that, unlike South East and South Asian countries where English is literally NEEDED.

btssuganim_ learn what..
He really want to educate Korean. Appreciate
I don’t think you truly realize (i know u do🙌🏿)how important these social experiments and videos are. It brings the world together. Millions of people literally watch your videos. This helps me in my classes. I honestly thought SK knew nothing about racism so i was always passive and gave 2nd chances. This changed my entire perception. I felt discouraged from learning korean because I didnt think i’d have a positive life in that language. But I am learning that its based on the individual just like in any country. This was heartwarming. We as humans have a lot to learn, me as well. We also need to learn/teach with our hearts. Which is what this video does.
So much love to you, Donna ❤️ The group with the two guys and the girl were so goodhearted.
the 3 people that were so surprised made me cry, they were so adorable 😭💙
She’s so pretty and im impressed she knows Korean, I’ve been studying Korean for 2 years to visit but no success :/
