- More than 300,000 people are diagnosed with Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses every year. Taking precautions against tick bites is essential for minimizing your chances of infection. The Appalachian Trail Conservancy has partnered with Insect Shield, tick researcher Karl Ford, and Lyme disease survivor/awareness advocate Logan McCulloch to bring you this video highlighting effective tick bite prevention.
If you are interested in treating your own clothes/gear with repellent or purchasing pretreated clothing, head to InsectShield.com and use promo code “ATC” for a discount on your first purchase. In addition, 10% of all sales through this link (www.insectshie...) will be donated back to the ATC.
Thank you never thought about the logs I sat on, on the AT.
Got Lyme disease in PA while thru hiking this last summer and it was *not* fun! Worth taking preventative measures.
I sprayed my boot tops, sock tops, and lower pant legs with deet and also used my trekking poles like ski poles on a slolem course to push back taller brush and branches before I passed through. I understand that ticks like to throw themselves off of the brush to get to moving targets, I figure that if the first thing they have a chance to grab for is a aluminum trekking pole they will whiff and fall to the ground...just a theory of mine. The important thing is to always be aware of your surroundings and to know the symptoms of Lyme so that you can act quickly if infected.
How about telling/showing what a tick does when it bites you?
Good suggestion! National Geographic has an in-depth breakdown of the tick-bite process here: phenomena.nationalgeographic.com/2013/10/30/heres-what-happens-when-a-tick-bites-you/
Thank you
HI !
AT TRACTOR SUPPLY STORES I'VE SEEN PERMETHRIN X 10 IN BOTTLES & IS USED FOR LIVESTOCK & FARM ANIMALS / ETC. BUT IT DOESN'T SAY HOW MUCH PER GALLON FOR CLOTHING, HIKING EQUIPMENT, ETC! DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW MUCH TO USE PER GALLON? WOULD BE VERY HELPFUL & A LOT CHEAPER TOO! MY NEPHEW WAS HIKING IN PATAPCO PARK, MARYLAND! IN TWO SEPARATE TIMES HE PULLED OFF AROUND 200 OR JUST IN ONE DAY! HE CALLED ME UP I TOLD HIM TO TAKE HIS CLOTHES OF OUTSIDE PUT EVERYTHING IN A GARBAGE BAG, HAVE HIS MOM OR WIFE TO CHECK VERY CAREFULLY. USE SCOTCH TAPE IF THEY'RE LOOSE & TAKE THE TAPE & HIMSELF TO HIS DOCTOR TO GET CHECKED THOROUGHLY. MAYBE GET THE TICKS TEST TOO IF THEY CAN OR WILL ? SORRY SO WINDED BUT IT SEEMS TO BE GETTING BAD AROUND HERE? THANK YOU! GOD BLESS YOU ALL ALWAYS! BE SAFE! HAVE FUN! SMILE! ENJOYED!
