Good watching during quarantine. Thanks for keeping the content coming! Also: While we primarily have Dreyer's around us you can find Edy's at certain stores. From what I've gathered it can sometimes be cheaper around here to order Edy's and have it shipped as opposed to ordering Dreyer's directly from the manufacturer.
I'm on the east coast, and I first heard about Dreyer's on a Food Network show, Unwrapped perhaps. But instead of confusing them with Edy's, I confused them with Breyer's.

I live in San Jose. The Nestle factory is in Oakland. Arrowhead Spring water is in one location there along with Dreyer's/DiGiorno pizza at another location. Haagen-Dazs, which I am eating right now, is also made in the same Dreyers factory. looks like they have an actual storefront/ice cream parlor there.
Maybe try doing a video on a charity retail chain like goodwill or vinnies in Australia. Interesting and unique businesses and very little known about how they operated
It would be a short video though. The reason is pretty simple. Better would be a whole video about name differences in Australia (and to some extent New Zealand) from the rest of the world. There's a different Woolworth's in Australia, not that they have any US competition for the name anymore. New Zealand has a different Bed, Bath and Beyond. There are others too, besides Burger King, I'm just forgetting them.
I have never heard of ether one probably because I used to live in the south (Florida) and when I moved up west I still never heard of any of them until today.
In Hong Kong, they sell it under the name Dreyer's, and I assume that's the name they use in oversea. They use Edy's solely for avoiding confusing in the East Coast, so I think Dreyer's would be a more well known name in the world.
firerocket that is so strange to me because I’ve always seen dreyers and breyers in my stores, wasn’t confused and didn’t pay attention to the fact that their names are similar
It's interesting, since it's Edy's here and I'm not sure I had ever seen or heard of Dreyer's until recently. It would make sense if they were trying to separate it from Dreyer's, since that's what I'm bound to confuse it with.
Actually, in Puerto Rico (in the Caribbean) it is Edy's, so I would believe that same split through the middle of North America goes through overseas as well... IOW, Dreyer's in Asia and Oceania and Edy's in Europe. Wonder how they manage for a country like Brazil if Nestlé sells either brand there. I believe Unilever doesn't sell Breyer's there, as they have other brands into their "Heart" (like Good Humor in US) brand umbrella all over South America...
That's pretty much it. The rebranding of Edy's on the west coast was basically a concession made to Breyer's, who only had an East Coast presence when the Dreyer's direct store delivery fleet started moving the product beyond the Rockies. Then, Breyer's moved their product to the West Coast and suddenly didn't think the brand name similarities would be confusing. Go figure.
So I've lived in Washington for nearly my whole life, where we have Dreyers, and when I was 8/9 my family briefly moved to North Carolina and I saw the ice cream I knew was now Edy's and I assumed that was a permanent global name change, but when I moved back to Washington it was Dreyers again and I was super confused.
Here in central FL we have both! I’ve seen Edys a little more but we have Dreyers as well 🤠 I never put two and two together as to why their packaging looked so similar lmao. Dreyer’s is always at cheaper stores like family dollar, while Edy’s can be found in CVS and Walmart!
Here in Washington we call it Dreyers but I remember that their were these fruit bar ice cream bars that had the brand name Edy's? The fruitbars are now gone and looks like they are owned by outshine, and the ice cream remains as Breyers. I hope someone here also remembers these Fruit bars.
I live in Maryland and have a Dreyer's/Nestle Plant 5 Miles from me in Jessup, MD. And the Plant also produces Haagen Das. Don't hate on me on this next one and check it first, but they also Produce a Brand called Big Gay Ice Cream. It has a Picture of a Unicorn on it, sold only in New York I believe.
There is a German ball bearing company called FAG Bearings (Fischer's Automatische Gussstahlkugelfabrik). There is alot of funny stuff in the ball bearing industry. My dad worked for a big ball bearing outfit. The "ball factory" was at his location. And he used to bring home boxes of "precision balls" to bring to presentations for his customers. There was also the term "roller balls" I saw frequently on products, lol.
I live in ND near the MT border. Depending on the distribution centers, one of our Grocery stores carries Dreyer's and the other carries Edys. The same runs for Hellman's and Best Foods. One company gets its supply from Minneapolis and the other from Denver or Salt Lake.
One night I saw both an Edy's and a Dreyer's commercial within the same hour on the same channel and the commercial was exactly the same except for the name! I went "WTF?!" This is the first I've heard or seen anyone else mention it! Thanks!
Wait, so Edy started in Montana and yet it's sold as Dryer's in Montana and Dryer started in NY and it's sold as Edy's there? That's not weird or confusing at all.
Chicago area: Round here it's Edy's. Never heard of Dryer's until one day watching one of those "world's best commercials" shows and they had the Dryer's commercial with the old woman picking up the truck you showed. That was a good 20 years ago or so though. Figured out by myself it probably had something to do with being so similar a name to Bryers. FWIW round here we also used to have both Checkers and Rally's.
When I see two brands with different names like this, I just assume they merged or one bought the other. What insanity produces two founders with the same first name and last names that differ by only one letter? I probably only realized Dreyer's existed within the last month. It's Edy's here.
Grew up in Buffalo N.Y., it was Edy’s. Now live on the west coast, and it’s Dreyers. I looked into this myself about 10 years ago, but still a great video.
As a Bay Area native, I grew up with Dryer's being around (we didn't always get it, because often we'd go to Rick's Rather Rich, a few blocks away, for a single-shop experience... but when we bought grocery-store ice cream, it was Dryer's often enough). But I didn't know they were from Grand Ave in Oakland! That's less than 3 miles from where I currently sit! I've known about Edy's for a while, and always thought it was very strange. I was just telling someone about that tonight, and found this. Thanks! :)
P.S. And when I first started hearing about Bryers, there was definitely confusion for a while. I thought it was other people being confused, at first, and thinking it was a B instead of a D. Then I learned better... and it's mostly easy to figure out, now, which one someone means. But yeah, that was an amusing time, at first. And it still occasionally comes up amusing. :)
I'm from Chicago and we have Edy's here. When I visited Texas and saw Dreyer's for the first time I stayed away from it because it just didn't feel right... CLEARLY THAT'S EDY'S! 😂
I’m from Los Angeles, and other than a map from Knott’s Berry Farm, I didn’t know what Edy’s was, and when I saw it, I thought it was a no-namer stealing the Dreyer’s logo
Local chain Jewel osco sells Breyers and Walmart sells Edys. (Along with other stores selling it). One thing and only thing the Midwest has over the east/West coast.
Thanks for the video! I'm in Los Angeles and our supermarket has both, Dreyer's and Edy's. They both say Dreyers Edys Ice Cream with ice cream cones for the apostrophes. Breyers is also on the shelf.
@@vinstinct East coast rite aids started getting packaged Thrifty ice cream in the freezer section last year. The cartons state how long the Thriftys brand has been around, but no real context given beyond that. @@nelsonricardo3729 Part of learning a language is actually hearing the words of that language. I live in Alabama and we have Edy's and I too have always pronounced it, to myself, as Eddy's. Or both, unsure which is accurate. I've never seen a commercial for it.
But it doesn't matter as I just make my own ice cream now, lol.
Im from Puerto Rico.I had never heard of Dreyer’s.They sell Edy’s here.
Edy's looks like a bad photoshop, and I had to check to make sure this wasn't an april fools day joke
As an easterner, I could say the same about Dreyer's
I felt the same exact way with dreyers
Yeah, "Edy's" really doesn't fill the name banner well...
Tea Pub Well seeing as Edy’s logo was made after Dreyer’s, it could be argued that it *is* just a bad photoshop

Here's a few other ones you should do for your "Why Two Different Names?" series next:
Burger King/Hungry Jack's
TJ Maxx/TK Maxx
If you live in the Phillipines.
Royal/Fanta
@@conradojavier7547 hmm. never knew fanta had a different name.
Wouldn't you rather have an HJ over a BK?
When we first saw TKMaxx we thought someone made a typo when making the sign and didn’t want to pay to get a new one.
Hellmann's and Best Foods?
If you move left 4 letters, 4 times, starting on the second “E” in “Dreyers”, you can spell “Edy’s”
You should do "Why three names?", Oroweat vs. Arnold vs. Brownberry. What a story!
I moved to Arizona from the Midwest and was so confused when I saw the Edy’s container with a different name on it.
I always thought because "Dreyers" and "Breyers" were so similar sounding they'd changed it to "Edys."

Very good analysis of the ice cream wars and history of the two brands. Living in Southeast I never see Dreyers. All new to me. Thank you.
A good double name alternate reality is “Burger King” and “Hungry Jacks”. Have fun there!
It's because there was already a copyright in Australia under Burger King
It would be a short video though. The reason is pretty simple. Better would be a whole video about name differences in Australia (and to some extent New Zealand) from the rest of the world. There's a different Woolworth's in Australia, not that they have any US competition for the name anymore. New Zealand has a different Bed, Bath and Beyond. There are others too, besides Burger King, I'm just forgetting them.

Meanwhile I’ve never heard of any of them
That's because you don't live in America... -_-
I have never heard of ether one probably because I used to live in the south (Florida) and when I moved up west I still never heard of any of them until today.

@@russiaprivjet braums is awesome! Because of Quarantine, you can now order quarts from the market via drive thru.
I’m from central TX, and we have Dreyer’s there. I currently live in TN, where the ice cream is known as Edy’s.
It’s called Edy’s here in Minnesota. I don’t remember hearing of Dreyer’s, but I think I remember seeing Breyers when I’ve been out east.
Atlanta, GA here so very familiar with Edy's, never saw Dreyer's before. Very cool and informative! Thank you!
@@cvb4117 It crossed my mind why the names were so Simi but then I just shrugged it off and looked for the type of flavor I wanted.
Go figure.
*They had a baby, Breyer’s which ended up taking over.*
Actually the divide is like a big S. When I lived in Wisconsin I knew Edy's, but now I live in Texas and I see Dreyer's
Yeah, I've seen big gay ice cream. Never tasted it, but the name and packaging are fun!
WAIT IT WAS A BRAND AND NOT A STAND ALONE STOP. I just thougjt it was a stand alone stop near the 14.st union square station
IDK y but "Dreyer Cream" doesn't sound that appetizing

But Edy's "cream" sounds a lot like something else that sounds wayyy less appetizing.
I went "WTF?!"
This is the first I've heard or seen anyone else mention it! Thanks!
Brb let me grab my ice cream pint before I start this video
Wait, so Edy started in Montana and yet it's sold as Dryer's in Montana and Dryer started in NY and it's sold as Edy's there? That's not weird or confusing at all.
Edy's didn't start as ice cream in Montana, was into candy (like See's)...

FWIW round here we also used to have both Checkers and Rally's.
jb888888888 we have dreyers too depending on the grocery store you go to.
I live in the north midwest and we have both edys and bryers in our stores.
Thank you for this interesting episode.
When I see two brands with different names like this, I just assume they merged or one bought the other. What insanity produces two founders with the same first name and last names that differ by only one letter?
I probably only realized Dreyer's existed within the last month. It's Edy's here.
In Minnesota, it's Edy's. I've only heard of Dreyer's on RUclips.

*Hands down, Thrifty and McDonald’s Ice Cream Cone will always be the GOAT in terms of value.*
Thriftys rules! It's sad that east coast people don't know they're missing an ice cream counter at their Rite Aids.
East coast doesn't have rite aid (Thrifty's) ice cream? That sucks.
@@vinstinct East coast rite aids started getting packaged Thrifty ice cream in the freezer section last year. In limited selection and the packaging looks totally different than what's sold in the west. They placed a small advertisement for it on all the front doors telling you it's going to be "your new favorite ice cream". But it doesn't give any indication of it's history. The cartons state how long the Thriftys brand has been around, but no real context given beyond that. So if you had never been to the west, it just looks like this random ice cream brand appeared out of no where. Still no ice cream counter at all though.
I live in the Bay Area and have only ever heard and seen Dryer’s. That being said I go to the school in east coast and have never seen Edy’s (at least from what I remember).

From NC, so I've literally never heard of Dreyers before.
But no matter what you call it, the ice cream is DELICIOUS.

Patrick Gillespie Frosties vs Frosted Flakes
Thats funny i never realized until just now that coco puffs are indeed simply chocolate flavored corn pops
They invented Rocky road :)

I knew of the existence of Dreyer's since I was a teenager (I have family on the west coast; remember seeing it in a grocery store and being confused), but I always thought that it was Breyers that was called Dreyer's on the west coast, not Edy's. Now I'm not even sure if they sell Breyers over there.
Growing up in CA, we had Dreyer's a lot. Good stuff. Their slow churned coffee ice cream is one of my favorites.
