  • Alarm klaxons blared like a chorus of death, followed by a deafening explosion. The ship shuddered violently, nearly knocking the man to his knees, but he stayed upright, bracing himself on a nearby guardrail. They were being boarded by what looked like a Syndicate ship. His past had finally come back to haunt him. But his only thought was to find his partner and protect them from the marauders that had stormed the vessel.
The echoing metallic clang of boots reverberated through the halls like a tolling bell, sending chills down his spine. Memories of his time with the Syndicate flooded his mind. They never targeted individuals like this. This was personal.
With little time to spare, he unholstered his blaster and made a mad dash toward his partner’s quarters. Rounding the corner to the main hub of the ship, he was met face to face with a group of Syndicate mercenaries. Before they could even raise their weapons, his instincts kicked in, and the four mercenaries dropped to the ground in rapid succession.
Every corner he turned was met with opposition, but his determination never wavered. The air grew hazy with blaster smoke, his nostrils burning from the familiar scent of ozone. Pressing on toward the back of the ship, where the quarters were located, he started to hear distant screams and yells. He ran faster, using the commotion to pinpoint his partner's location.
As he burst into the common living area, he saw two mercenaries grappling with his partner. Dead men lay on the ground, blaster burns pockmarking the weak points in their armor. Two more men were taking cover by the airlock. Just as he raised his blaster to aid his lover, a strong, unseen hand knocked him to the ground.
His lover turned, eyes wide with terror, and in that split-second distraction, the two men in cover descended upon them, pinning and cuffing them. He tried to get back on his feet, screaming in rage, but a crippling punch landed at the base of his neck, shattering several vertebrae and paralyzing him.
Finally, the man who had been hiding just behind the doorframe revealed himself. Clad in black Repuls-Armor with crimson Syndicate symbols, the man wore a helmet adorned with tusks. But he knew who was under the helmet.
“VELZLEV!” The outlaw roared. He knew the armored brute. They had been raised together in the Syndicate as soldiers, bound by blood and betrayal.
Velzlev removed his helmet, revealing a scarred, pale face devoid of any hair, with eyes as red as the molten rivers of Dispater VI. Deep black tattoos covered his face, encircling his eyes and bald head like a mask.
“You should’ve known we’d find you soon enough, Ryx. The Syndicate never lets people go. Especially not people like you or I.”
Ryx attempted to get up but couldn’t move his legs or arms. He violently threatened the Syndicate and Velzlev, but his threats were met with barbaric laughter.
“You took from the Syndicate. Now we take from you.” Velzlev reached down and grabbed Ryx's head, turning it toward the airlock. He saw his partner, eyes filled with terror, sadness, and desperation, still screaming for him to get up.
“Take one last look at them, Ryx. It’ll be the last you see of them.” The man in black turned the gunslinger’s head to face his own. “But I will be the last thing you ever see.”
The soldier let go of the outlaw’s head and fired several shots into him, some piercing, others grazing, cackling the entire time. Seemingly satisfied, Velzlev spoke in Syn-Speak to the other mercenaries, ordering them back to the ship. “We’ve gotten what I came for.”
As Ryx fell into unconsciousness, he swore that, no matter what, he would eradicate the Syndicate and kill Velzlev. He would take back his family. The last thing he felt was the sensation of falling as the ship plummeted from high orbit to the surface of Velox III...
    Song Title: Ecliptic
I needed a song that was darker and higher energy, to convey the beginning of Ryx’s journey of vengeance, so I drew to a more ambient Metal/hard rock ideas and sound to paint that picture.
