- I discovered a Northern Rough Green Snake (Opheodrys aestivus) lying in the middle of the Appalachian Trail in Northern Virginia. I spent the next hour photographing and videoing it and in this episode I tell you everything you need to know about these beautiful snakes including: Common names, scientific name and its meaning, size and length, how to identify, how to distinguish a Rough Green Snake from a Smooth Green Snake, close-ups of head and scales, define and show what "keeled" scales are, what they eat, where they live and more! I also show how they change to a blue color through photos of a bike trail green snake victim!
Beautiful snake and very interesting video.
Thank you Roni!
I love this video! Green snakes are just so cute! I own one, and she’s just so adorable, and lovable! If she thinks a person is a threat, she quickly slithers up too me and slithers on my leg, or up my arm. Such a amazing animal.
Great share Carter! I too am ABSOLUTELY fascinated by these snakes. Also making videos on snakes is my favorite subject! Have you checked out my other snake videos. I am trying to get more people to respect and understand snakes...and NOT kill them on sight!
@@natureatyourdoor I have! And yes, I want people too understand them too! They are such amazing creatures, its such a bummer that people assume they're there for bad intentions. Thanks Frank!
Same many people misunderstand snakes it's very sad that a bush of them die by human sight I just now saw this guy and I'm still researching so I can get one!
Hi Frank. I know about green snakes ,but I've never seen one. Thank you so much. I've seen almost all the rest we have in our game lands. It's very relaxing to come home from working on game lands and watch you.God bless teacher.
Wow! Such a cool creature. Thank you!
Ha! I know Beth...did I say how fascinated I was! Ha! Thanks for your support! Always great to hear from you!
Btw..did you see my stink bug video is going viral? Over 100,000 views!
Outstanding video Frank! Very informative and thank you for including me!! Love your educational videos!!
Thank you Ted! I am glad you liked it...great former student/teacher collaboration!
saw one jump from the trees /bushes into my yard here in Florida...looked neon! so cool
Yes! Their color is striking!
Morning frank. I'm watching your video on the green snake, from Maine. I'm having my coffee with my chipmunk 🐿️ friend. Another awesome video. I love learning . You are always teaching, and makes if fun. God bless teacher.
Good morning!
Another great episode. I have never seen green snake, but maybe I just missed it. Saw someone comment they see in update NY, so will have to keep eye out. 😀
Hey Terri! As always I am glad you enjoyed it! Yes...i was surprised about it range as well. My daughter teaches up the Hudson River and her students said they had seen it in new York State too!
Love love love these little sweeties, thank you for showing us in the wild, inspiring!
Really fascinating snake! Love sharing of course!
@@natureatyourdoor hoping to be able to announce some happy baby news by end March, trying to up the home bred nbrs so WC will be les sought after.

You are right I looked at your videos , what a find! I love green snakes
Awesome Annie! Great to have you in the NAYD learning community! I really enjoy interacting with each and everyone of my viewers!!!
Finding the green snake was truly a memorable event for me! Though there are others that say they see them all the time. 60 plus years in the forest my first!
Just stumbled across your channel. Thanks for sharing your love of nature and knowledge with us!
Great! I love it when people discover and enjoy what I have to share! I am still trying to get the word out!
Love this video! I have one as a pet and I learned a lot here, like the meaning of their latin name (so cute!), what “keeled” means, and that they turn BLUE after death. 🙀🙀🙀 It’s incredible that their colors can be so bright!
Very interesting you have one as a pet. What do you feed it?
My first memory of my parents freaking out is me carrying one of these in my hands when I was 4 years old, while playing in the back yard/woods, then running up to the house saying "Look, I caught a big green worm". "OH MY GOD!! THROW IT DOWN NOWWWW!! OH MY GOD, OH MY GOD!!!!". Safe to say I quickly learned the difference between snakes and worms that day.
LOLOLOL! too funny, love it! Thanks for sharing ! :-)
WOW!! Several of my students have seen rough green snakes here in upstate NY :)
I was wondering how far North they occurred! Thanks for sharing!
Wow.
@@susanncarelli911 fascinating isn't it susann? :-)
Cool stuff. The keeled scales probably aid navigating shrubbery branches and getting through grass mats???
Interesting question Gerard... now I am curious about that two. Some snakes have keeled scales other's not...i am going to investigate!
I think is aids swimming, many water snakes have keeled scales. And rough green snakes will drop from branches into water to escape predators.
Very cool
Such a tropical looking species in NA!
Once again!! THANK YOU for the GREAT Education!!!:)) We have only ‘smooth’ Green Snakes ( to my knowledge) , in Wis. Keep the GREAT videos coming, please?!?!!🐍🐍✌️
Jenny O ...from Wisconsin! So cool. Thanks for kind and supportive words. This is why I make the videos...for people just like you..and reading your comment is my greatest reward! Thank you so much..it means so much to me! I love answering questions too.
What a lucky find. I live in the northern most part of the Northern Neck. I've been lucky to find some pretty nice looking Ribbon snakes and a few copperheads and one really nice black rat snake, but never so lucky as to find a green snake here in Virginia. I used to find them routinely in Central Florida. I also miss lizards. Thanks for the great vids.
Thank you Late Boomer! I am so glad you have discovered my channel. Despite my efforts to find a live copperhead and all my time in the forest I have yet to see one! As for lizards....i ran into the green anole down at Myrtle Beach camping last week...episode coming soon I think you will like that one!!
Where did you find them in central Florida? I’ve never seen them and I’d love to
We lived on a 5 acre lot in Brooksville Florida.
What city are you closest to in the Neck? I just moved to Kilmarnock from Williamsburg!
@@woodchuk1 I'm on the opposite end of the Northern Neck. The North Eastern side.
I have 4 of these guys I got from a reptile rescue they are very active and interesting to watch, it's hilarious watching them stalk a cricket
Pretty cool!!! 😎
There's one outside where I'm at rn it's a long one 😢 it hissed at my sister 😂 when she opened a door
Wow! Crazy!
We found one the other day. I went to pick it up it scared me, I thought it might bite me. So I dropped it and when I went to go get it, it came after me! 😂 I did a funky dance my grand daughter and friend laughed so hard at me! Thank you for sharing! It was actually the second one we found that day. The first one we saw in the road and turned a round to go get it out of the road , but a log truck hit it before we could get it. This one was in the road as well, but I didn’t know much about them so it did scare me.
They are such unique snakes! Please check out my other snake videos...i think it will add to your comfort through understanding!
Nice find. Thanks for sharing. I too miss lizards, not too many of them in PA. I used to live in California, and caught a lot of Western Fence Lizards, and the occasional Aligator Lizard. The later of which have a nasty bite if you find a big one. I had a fence lizard run up my pant leg once, that's when you find out who your friends are. It's only funny when it isn't you. Jon
Up the leg? NOOOOOOO! lol! Did you see my carolina anole video? ruclips.net/video/cHVEUwqY6S0/видео.html I hope you will check out my amphibian and reptile play list...quality videos i think...I am trying to get seen in the herp community! Thanks!
I used to keep these when I was a kid, They were available to buy in the UK back then as were the smooth species but now they can't be found for sale here
It is a beautiful calm snake for sure!
I'm 56 and over the years I had the opportunity to catch and see a lot the largest green snake I seen was about 2 years ago in Bedford Va it was about 3 feet long and about as big around as a bottle cap I watched it for about 15 minutes before it went in a thicket
Hi Alvin. My eyes just dont detect green snakes...and I am a bit red/green color blind. That snake you saw...wow! Seriously I think was the state record!!!!
I'm trying so hard to attract these and Garter snakes to my garden ❤
Lol! I know right!
I've only seen one smooth green snake when I was a kid, with all the building going up I just don't see them anymore and that's sad.
They are hard too see though! That green just blends into habitat!
Cool!!! Here in NC I've only encountered a couple green snakes in the 20 years here. I think we have too many Black rat snakes which I believe keep their population low.
Thanks for sharing your experience JediJohn! Its hard to get a handle on true population of this elusive snake!
I know a few reliable spots here in NC where I find em all the time! Dunno if you know The Wildlife Brothers (educational RUclips cahnnel) but I'm touring them around central NC this spring and getting them some major film targets (including rough greens)
Found this video after I saw one in Maine. Never knew about these!
I have a breeding population in my front yard, have to be careful when mowing the lawn. Just saw one the other day that was bluish gray green ! Only one I have seen that wasn't bright green
HI Edward! That is fascinating. Yes..very unusual color morph.
I grew close to Harper's Ferry, WV but on the MD side. We called green snakes grass snakes. I've seen one in MD, VA, NC, and GA. P.S., Harper's Ferry hasn't been a part of VA since 1863 when that portion of the state became WV.
I hope to be in Harpers Ferry on Sunday for my 65th birthday and official finish of my 540 mile section hike of va
I haven't seen a Green Snake since 1981 and it was in the forrest
This is still my only one!
Hey I live in SC and my garage was open for an hour and one came in. I lost within minutes so I might still be there. I was worried because I have kids and don’t know much about them.
Funny that it came in your garage! No worries ...perfectly harmless
.I hope the kids get to see it!
Can green snake live with frogs and lizards or fishes?
I am not sure!
I think green snakes are cool I seen one on the tinker creek Greenway in roanoke va it was awesome but I did move it bc ppl that rides bikes on the trail probably wouldn't have notice it and run it over
Good nature stewardship! Thanks for taking time to,move him! Wonderful you got to see this one!
I caught one ..a baby one ..how much could i sell it for
??? Sell?
@@natureatyourdoor i let it free
@@lorenzosaucedo4814 ah! Lorenzo! You know I like that very much! 💪👏👏👏👍😃
Are these garden snakes
Garden snake would be a very general term for any harmless snake one might find around your house! I think I,have heard it referring to garter or ribbon snakes more often then not.
@@natureatyourdoor oh ok
I killed 5 in mpumalanga I did know is friendly
I wanna see one all I find are rattle snakes and copperheads :(
And I want to see both of those!
Almost went over one on my bike while in my driveway. Thought it was a twig with green leaves (Im near sighted).
Until I came across this one ...the only ones I had seen were road kills!
