Regarding the 'bass guitar' sound being sampled from 'Falling' - it's the same sound there. Kinny Landrum has told the story repeatedly on the internet about coming up with that sound for 'Falling' by shifting down a twang guitar sample he already had for his Emulator-II. When making the Twin Peaks theme, he said they took the same backing tracks and re-did the 'vocal' using French Horn from the Emulator-II.
The Twin Peaks theme is a direct instrumental version of Falling (which David Lynch co-wrote and produced with Angelo Badalamenti), it is NOT sampled from it. It was written for Julie Cruise's album and later used for Twin Peaks. It's the exact same recording minus vocals.
I always thought Angelo played those synthesized parts himself! A couple of years ago or more, when I was itching to purchase a Squier Bass VI, I became convinced the original Fender version was the guitar model used on the Twin Peaks theme. For about 10 years, (2003 -2013), I had a Roland JX 10. I sold it, and I miss it. I keep hoping that I can get an MKS 70 module to replace it, but the software emulator looks tempting, even to a man who doesn’t use software synthesizers. And, your imitation of Kyle McLaughlin in character as Agent Cooper is impeccable!
Guitar sample is actually from the factory Emulator II library. You can find it in just about any Emu factory library, I got it off my old EIII Factory Library cds
You missed a major synth from Twin Peaks. It's one that I think defined the sounds in Laura's Theme. It was the version of the Juno 106 with built in speakers, the Juno HS-60. To me, that synth IS Twin Peaks.
Conflicting data here, because other people have mentioned that it was the Roland JX-10 (which it is documented that Badalamenti owns). And the composer also mentioned the D-550 which they used for pads, I believe.
I think "Laura Palmer's Theme" was the most iconic song from Twin Peaks. That pad sound that kept recurring in the series and also the theme that Moby's first hit, "Go" was based around. Maybe that's what's gonna be continued? Think I read at the time that it was a layer of the D-550 and a Roland analog (which probably was he MKS-70).
What no you do not gain "expressiveness" in the eighties. Maybe you weren't old enough at the time to remember that it was the resurgence of analogue that brought back expressiveness via the knob-per-function model that was abandoned in favor of the "real" sounds in sampling.
No they shouldn't "check out the Xiu Xiu cover." It's a cover of nothing.. Their noise is simply mindless racket which they've associated the name Twin Peaks to entice foolish and curious people to click on their video. In a world with any justice, these morons would be drowned in vomit.
Not sure it's your cup of hot black water but I would love to see a video about the sound effect from Coppola's The Conversation that became synonymous with spies looking into what they should not look into. The effect is used in the recent PBS "United States of Secrets" piece. Thanks!
Ya gotta luv RUclips, so many comment Tech-perts, so little time. Looking forward to hearing all the exquisitely crafted Synth masterworks as follow-up.
Enjoyed the video. Sorry for being a synth lawyer here, but if the original baritone/bass guitar was a sample, the rate of the tremolo would slow down when the lower note is played, but it doesn't.
As far as I know, Angelo Badalamenti used the Fender Bass VI on this. Also, first time I've heard that it was sampled. Doesn't feel right to be honest.
Justin great analisys but don't forget MOST(if not all) the sounds came from an E-mu PROteus/1!!! The bass sound (Stone bass), the electric piano (E.Piano 1) and so on... :)
When knobs & sliders disappeared, the synth dark ages began. It wasn’t until Clavia brought out the Nord Lead, until companies realized that sound designers need friendly interfaces.
It's nice from a 2020 stand-point that ableton is used in each of these videos but it would be a lot more interesting if you showed us how these producers actually processed these sounds originally with hardware...... If you were to use outboard effects and gear from this era it would be a lot more impressive
Why do you keep saying they sampled the Julie Cruise song when it's just the same song. Angelo Badalamenti and David Lynch wrote and produced the whole album, including that song. All they had to do was remove the vocals for the tv show.
AKSCHUALLY: Twin Peaks theme is not based on Julie Cruz Falling, nor was guitar sampled from this track. Falling is just Twin Peaks theme with Lynch's lyrics and Julie's Vocals. And Rhodes was actually Rhodes in this track. Really poorly researched. None of the sounds shown in this video sound even close to the original.
From checking this on my DX-7, "E PIANO 1" sounds like the preset used in the Twin Peaks theme (played at softest velocity so it doesn't get bright/tiney). In the video I think he might be playing "PIANO 1" instead .. which doesn't sound quite right (besides the way he's playing it).
could it be that twang guitar is just another term for a fender bass vi or danelectro like bass? i‘m a huge lynch and badalamenti fan and playing bass since decades, i always thought it is a sampled bass vi with muted flatwound strings and played with a pick. for non bass players: this is a good example of the sound. ruclips.net/video/wiK5Y9Q1cew/видео.html
that feeling when the gum you like is coming back in style
Alec Morgan lmaoooo
Rest in piece Angelo! Thanks for all the great music.
3:50 see the twin peaks? Lynch was blown away when he saw how the MIDI looked on this song, he called it "Cosmic"
When/where?

do one on eraserhead and just play white noise for 90 minutes
for those who are interested, Omnisphere 2 has a "patch" called "Baritone Guitar a" that for my ear hits that sound perfect
Just got a DX7 and the first thing I did when I powered it on was go to E.Piano 1 and play the Twin Peaks theme
I'm glad after the mishap at Jurassic World you got back to your real passion, synthesizers, and then got this cool job at Reverb.
The twin peaks music is like a warm blanket

I love these videos some much, your love of synths is a beautiful thing.

Sorry to nitpick but Falling is not written by Julee Cruise, it is by Badalamenti and Lynch
AAARGGGH 😢😬😬
Your shadow is always with you. Sometimes ahead, sometimes behind. Except on cloudy days....and at night
Man, I hope you guys continue this series with Justin. Love these!
That patch you like is going to come back in style

Love this! The "Twin Peaks Theme" is one of my favorite pieces of music. I sure love the Rhodes.
Man, this is the style, this is fucking art, that sound it's like win the golden ticket right away to Twin Peaks.
Justin your vids are excellent, kudos!
Who operated Justin's hands? He deserves credit.
Ive heard all the bass parts on the album are done with a fender bass IV
6:10 Trippy Hands! Ultimate Crescendo indeed! 🙃

Brightblue Orange what I meant was velocity, aftertouch, and range of sounds. Totally agree that this generation lost expressiveness in sound design.
This is great! Would love to see one about Blade Runner. Great production and information!
I was under the impression Vinnie Bell played the bari guitar part on a Danelectro on the TP theme?
He does.
It's a sample.
Really enjoying the new season so far, though my biggest complaint is the lack of that glorious synth goodness!
Awesome tune for the teaser video ...
I loved that intro !!!
Best show ever made, including the new season. Lynch is a genius. Eraserhead is amazing too.
Great to hear the new series music with the Chromatics killing it.
Bari guitar was played by session guy Vinnie Bell.
*xiu xiu vigorously taking notes*
this is great!
My log says you did a great job on this video.
PG-8X is fantastic!
Such a great video
Mr. Badalamenti used a Roland jx10 a lot.
everybody here should check out the Xiu Xiu cover

bonjourmyfriends probably the tremolo effect was added after sampling

Post processing!
It's definitely a sample done on an Emulator II. The sample itself is clean and the tremolo and reverb were added during mixing.
According to the guy who played it, the tremolo was done using the Emulator-II's LFO
Sure about the guitar? Coz the 1 ur using doesn't sound like the low E string of a Fender Telecaster AT ALL.
Thanks for mentioning Kinny.

TIL that the greatest Fender guitar tone I ever heard was an 8bit sample. I have already listed all my gear on Reverb. Make me an offer. I'm done.
The backing track to Falling and The Twin Peaks theme are one and the same, I don’t thing Falling is where the sample came from
0:52 That's Badalamenti.
I'm under the impression you are talking into a Pax vaporizer in the intro :P
you missed the the F major and the Bb major arpeggio sounds
You can do this on the Kronos 2 with its sampler.
Great video! Loved it. Small annoying nitpick in the video description - the word is "canon", unless I'm missing a joke about large guns. haha
I was thinking the same thing, actually!
That is, unless the trem was applied to the same afterward...
Your name is DeLay? c'mon, man...even your name will let you know, you have to work with sound! hahaha

Was that DX7 Rhodes sound a preset? My Rhodes emulations on my DX sound like garbage. Then again I'm playing it through a bass amp

Turn down the velocity and level of the modulator operators (the non voices operators on that algorithm)...

ok
Think SP1200 was 12 bit thats one most folk think of probably was more
