  • The Dark Side of Space Exploration | Space Debris Piles Up | Between the Lines with Palki Sharma
    Satellites are extremely useful. They assist with global communications, GPS navigation, and even the gathering of weather information. However, they end up generating a significant amount of space junk. This space debris is dangerous due to the possibility of colliding with working satellites and even the International Space Station. So what's the solution? How do we deal with our space junk problem? Palki Sharma tells you on this episode of Between the Lines.

      Debris left in orbits below 600 km normally fall back to Earth within several years. At altitudes of 800 km, the time for orbital decay is often measured in centuries. Above 1,000 km, orbital debris will normally continue circling the Earth for a thousand years or more. 8:08 [NASA]

  • @ibnorml5506
    @ibnorml5506 Год назад +8

    In general, the space debris problem is a money problem. We need internationally agreed upon rules concerning the life of satellites and their like from cradle to grave. The cost of a launch needs to include the cost of deorbiting satellites once they are obsolete or nonfunctioning. Cleanup of existing debris should be financed by the current spacefaring nations (example, an annual fee collected and managed by the UN based on the percentage of satellite in operation would be one way of doing it).
    Remember that companies around the world have plans to quadruple the number of satellites in low Earth orbit over the next 10 years. And this is only the beginning.

    Poor human's suffering for their actions all due to lack of awareness, anyways there is a solution to it but it will be costly & will be very difficult. Other than this the core true solution is different that we can find within us if we give some space to ourselves that's other technique to bring true balance in ourselves first !
    Anyways we need to be more mindful of the impact that our activities have on space & on our environment, and we need to take steps to truly protect it. Next time we send something into space or whatever we do, we need to make sure that we are doing it in a responsible way. We need to develop smart solutions to the space debris problem, and come up with a true solution to it !
    Well mistake happens, next time we all need to be careful & aware of the possible consequences & be a critical thinker for the best of all !

      Most “space junk” is moving very fast and can reach speeds of 18,000 miles per hour, almost seven times faster than a bullet. Due to the rate of speed and volume of debris in LEO, current and future space-based services, explorations, and operations pose a safety risk to people and property in space and on Earth. 1:11[NASA]

      Space waste encompasses any piece of debris left behind by humans in space and therefore originating on Earth. Space debris can be as large as an inactive satellite, similar to the size of a car, or as small as a flake of paint. The real danger is the speed at which these objects move, more than 28,000 kilometres per hour, which turns them into real projectiles. 3:33 [Iberdrola]
