I just started getting into gardening because I'm sick of store bought strawberries and watermelons tasting like chalk or leather and I've found all of your videos to be extremely helpful. you have such a presence on camera and such an easy listening voice. thanks for all of the help and advice. I absolutely love butternut pumpkins (we call them pumpkins in Australia) so I think I'm going to give them a go. thanks a million!
+Shane Vaughan Hi Shane - Thanks so much for watching my videos, so glad you find them helpful in growing your garden. Growing a garden does spoil you on eating any other food except what you grow yourself or can buy fresh at farmers market. The flavor just can't be beat! Great to have you here, and I look forward to hearing more about your garden too!
2022 was my first time planting butternut squash....WOW...so in 2023 that will be my ONLY squash butternut. BTW when eating my butternut squash one does NOT have to peal your squash, cut into peaces over a stove add olive oil and brown sugar with a little butter. Cook on medium 15 minutes turnoff let set for another 15 minutes, place in frig put over a pasta salad cold and I also use butternut squash in my beans/rice crock pot stew...YUMMY...
I was just thinking of buying some squash seeds, then I thought, I’ll just cut open a squash ! ( duh ) looked it up and there you are doing it ! They even sprout right out of my compost !
I just bought a butternut squash from the grocery store. Can I use these seeds to save to planting next year? Or do I have to buy seeds for the 1st time planting?
You can absolutely save seeds from a store-bought butternut squash, but there are a few things to keep in mind. Most grocery store squashes are hybrids, which means the seeds might not produce the same squash you purchased. The resulting plants may have different traits (taste, size, growth habits) compared to the parent squash. If you’re okay with a little mystery and experimentation, saving and planting the seeds could be fun! However, if you want predictable results, buying seeds specifically labeled for growing might be the safer route for your first time. 😊. CaliKim
I have had such a hard time with summer squash/ winter squash due to caterpillars so I had to replant. I actually have both growing right now...our temps are in the 80-90s!!! I just wish for one each before the bugs get them!!! Thanks for the info, I saved quite a few pumpkin seeds for next season!!!!!
+Kristy Dooley That can be so discouraging! Glad you replanted, though, and hopefully you will get some before the weather turns cold! Have you considered building a hoop house to keep your warm weather crops going? I started to build my cattle panel hoop house - stay tuned for part one of the how to next week here, or hop on over to Carbon TV to watch it now. Glad you were able to save some pumpkin seeds - always good to grow your own!
+Joe Bucci Love, love the BNS soups! Easy to grow, you'll love having your own. Did you catch my BNS chili recipe? ruclips.net/video/vpxWkzwuvt0/видео.html. Your co workers would love you if you brought it in! Thx for stopping by, Joe!
I save all our squash and gourd seeds. Try using an ice cream scoop, they are much sturdier, and clean the guts out better. When I start the seeds, I clip the point off the seeds, not sure if it is necessary, but I had quick germination when I started the seeds.
Thanks for the great tip, Doug! Will try this the next time I need to scoop out my BNS! Happy to hear yo u are a fellow seed saver! And love the germination tip too! Thanks for watching!
I planted some spaghetti squash seeds from squash that I bought from the supermarket. I am about a month in and the leaves are getting large and look healthy. My question is, will the plants actually produce squash or just stay ornamental? I have no clue if the spaghetti squash I bought at Kroger is a hybrid or an heirloom. I think the type of squash is called “Courge spaghetti” Thanks for your time, Deb
Skin a tough squash with a vegetable peeler, then cut it. You can even just skin it along a strip for the knife, scoop the seeds, pop it in the microwave to cook.
Linda suggested I tell you how she prepares butternut squash. she cuts the large end making it flat, she then stands it up and peels the skin like a potato with a peeler.
+Rain Sqqual You know, I had the same problem as you did last year. I didn't really do anything different this year, but I did have them in a location where they got plenty of sun. I believe I fertilized them once during the growing season. They really did like this spot in the garden! Thanks for watching!
This spring I kept 6 seeds from a butternut squash and let them dry for a week before I planted them. Within a week they had all sprouted. Now they have grown in to strong healthy looking plants in my garden. This is my first time. Can anyone tell me how long It takes to grow a ripe butternut squash?
Congratulations!! Well done- saving seeds from your own crops is a pivotal gardening practice to ensure the safety and health of your vegetables! Butternut squash take around 110-120 days to grow until harvest. Thanks for watching!!
+Great Western Gardens Yes, it is! I was very pleased with the results , esp since my melons on the trellis were mostly eaten by the squirrels. For some reason, they only ate one butternut but mostly left them alone. I think because of the tough skins.
Hello Beautiful ! Why do you have to keep them on a plate for a couple of months before sowing ? Can't they be potted in soil after a few days to germinate ?
Just make sure they are really dry and plant them. now, or hold onto them until next season --- it's not so much the months - rather...that they are completely dry (sorry about that, Peter!)
@@CaliKim29 Okay. I am in a sub-tropical climate zone, and currently in autumn, so I guess I'll just have to wait for summer to come by again. What a nuisance.
Love you! Thanks for the help! I actually feed my dogs a big time veggie/fruit infused diet! I also grew up with bodacious gardens on my Fathers side and with my Father! We want to plant a garden this year too! God Bless and all the best! I will keep you posted! We are in Maryland btw on the mid Atlantic so Gardens can be complicated!!!
+workwillfreeyou So glad you liked the chili, it is always a crowd pleaser! And thanks for the compliment - I"m glad to break out some "winter" clothing now that the weather is a little cooler! Appreciate you stopping by!
You can start them inside 4 weeks before last frost date in the spring-plant seedlings outside after the last frost date or direct sow them into the garden after last frost date, as well! Keep men posted!
No, the heat will kill them for sure. Very few seeds want heat like that. TBH, Giant Sequoias are the only one I know of they require actual fire in order to open the seed pod. See, it's natural for us to be on fire in CA.
+Medibekteshi Medi yes, indeed I am! I love growing (and eating!) butternut squash - have you ever grown it? Here's a link to my butternut squash playlist: ruclips.net/p/PLH4z_9MDD00LqR8AgYzb4ON2fjW3gLlQs. Its very easy to grow and so, so tasty! Thx for watching!
+ron riley great idea, Ron - I've never thought to do that before - do you just pile them up in the individual egg compartments? will have to give this a go!
My favorite seed to roast!
YAY! CK

First time I will ever attempt something like this. I am actually feeling relieved on how simple you made this. Thank you!
Thanks for this! I’m a complete newbie to doing this from saved seeds and I really appreciate everything especially your tips!
I'm so glad, Evelyn!!! Do keep us posted! Keep it going!

Great work Helen, let me know!!! Kim
Thank you very much! This is my first shot at doing this. Looking forward to more squash next year.

I will be using your information to help save the seeds from my Blue Hubbard Squash. Very informative, thank you.
Thanks, I bought Butternut squash from the store. I plan to save some seeds and plant them in the spring. I have never grown winter squash before.
Thank you, this was very informative….
Glad it was helpful! CK
Too funny. My wife just asked me this a couple days ago. Now heres a video showing us how. Thanks
+mfhmonkey How funny! Guess great minds think alike, ha ha! How was your butternut harvest and what do you like to make with it? Thanks for watching!
CaliKim29 Garden & Home DIY We didn't grow Butternut, we got some Acorn Squash from a farmers market and we wanted to keep the seeds.

Hello! Can I plant directly from the squash without drying? I have some (wrinkly) squash from last fall and am ready to start seeds inside!
hey, Its April now. I still have butternut from last season & just cut it open today. Will I need to dry them out before they can germinate?
Kim, nice info. One of my co-workers made a batch of butternut squash soup, WOW.I will be growing a couple plants next year.

Still soooooooooo eze on the eyes!! Thanks
can you put them i the oven or microwave to dry them off or will that stop the gemmation process and when is the best time to plant them
Iam saving filipino squash (KALABASA) and i followed the way you did it thanks for the great video 👍😂
I live in Fresno, I'm doing this in the house.
thanks for the tip kim I well have to remember that

Do you think, I could let seeds I just harvested today, 2-7-20 dry, and plant this upcoming growing season?

Trying to harvest seeds from blue Hubbard squash. Wanted to make sure that tiny orange tip is to come off or be left on
Thank you Kim! Can’t wait to save the seeds from our BNS 🙂
I have a knife with very fine serrations.. so easy to cut through butternut pumpkin
Slice off the bottom so you have a flat surface and can slice it without wobbling and chopping your finger off.
Can you please do a video on HOW to grow butternut squash?
Skin a tough squash with a vegetable peeler, then cut it. You can even just skin it along a strip for the knife, scoop the seeds, pop it in the microwave to cook.

Great tip. Will try that thanks. It is quite difficult to peel.
How do you grow your butternut squash to being so big! My turn out so small. Any helpful tips? Thx

+dezarae1984 Hello, Dezarae! Did you grow any this year? Thanks for stopping by - great to see you!
Hey Kim! Is this the squash you grew up your cattle panel? Looks like you had great results!
+Great Western Gardens Yes, it is! I was very pleased with the results , esp since my melons on the trellis were mostly eaten by the squirrels. For some reason, they only ate one butternut but mostly left them alone. I think because of the tough skins.
Spaghetti Squash in NW Washington State 😋 👌 😍
They are growing like weeds! They r now vined up to keep off the ground. Just waiting for the flowers to bud and open.

I'm drying yellow crook neck seeds. I live in a cold area. Hope I can have some luck

Who do I stop them from molding?
You dont have to worry about the seed getting moldy?
i'm having an issue with mine i can get them growing from seeds fine but not getting any veg? help they seem to of came to a standstill?
Patty pans! Big yields!
I'm trying to save the seeds to plant in the spring. Do you think I could dry them with a food dehydrator?
glendayle When I saved the seeds of my spaghetti squash, I planted 3 seeds right away and let the rest dry for planting next year. All 3 germinated.
Hi...i hve to dry these seeds in sun
I made your Butternut Squash Chilli and it was great. U look stunning in those jeans.
+workwillfreeyou So glad you liked the chili, it is always a crowd pleaser! And thanks for the compliment - I"m glad to break out some "winter" clothing now that the weather is a little cooler! Appreciate you stopping by!
Does the squash have to be organic?
Hi CaliKim29, I was wondering when it come to the taste...what is the difference between butternut squash seed and pumpkin seed?
Personally I find that butternut squash seeds have a slight sweetness compared to pumpkin seeds.
When do you plant the seeds?
You can start them inside 4 weeks before last frost date in the spring-plant seedlings outside after the last frost date or direct sow them into the garden after last frost date, as well! Keep men posted!
Can I still grow the seeds after Ive cooked the butternut squash?
No, the heat will kill them for sure. Very few seeds want heat like that. TBH, Giant Sequoias are the only one I know of they require actual fire in order to open the seed pod. See, it's natural for us to be on fire in CA.
Can I save these in a paper envelope and let them dry there?
What if your seeds start spudding? Like growing lol do I need to start over?
👍👍👍👍
It's a lot easier to just cut off the bottom of the squash with a sharp santoku knife then scoop out seeds.
+Larissa Darville Thanks for the suggestion, Larrissa! What do you like to make with butternut squash?
Never thought of that.
you gonna plant them on the spring
+Medibekteshi Medi yes, indeed I am! I love growing (and eating!) butternut squash - have you ever grown it? Here's a link to my butternut squash playlist: ruclips.net/p/PLH4z_9MDD00LqR8AgYzb4ON2fjW3gLlQs. Its very easy to grow and so, so tasty! Thx for watching!

cardboard egg cartons work awesome for drying most seeds! sucks the moisture right outta them!
How right you are.
+ron riley great idea, Ron - I've never thought to do that before - do you just pile them up in the individual egg compartments? will have to give this a go!
