I can’t tell the CornStar family how much I have looked forward to your RUclips channel during the pandemic Quarantine. I have a farm family here in southwest Pennsylvania that I grew up next farm over. This family is 5th generation dairy farmer and they have a couple of young sons around Cole and Copper age. Last Saturday, they were doing some tillage and I got to set in the cab of their new Fendt 1050 for a nice ride along. At age 70, what a treat! You can take the boy off the farm, but never take the farm out of the boy. I just love you folks, your just like family!👍
Hey Buddy, if I could click the thumbs up over and over through the video I would. Great guests today. Thank you ladies for explaining how you help farmers. Thank you ladies, and thank you for taking care of Cole and Cornstar Farm. Cole... AWESOME SHOW!
Very educational and an eye opener for someone who had grandparents as farmers. They were good hard working people, but never could maximize their hard work.
Thanks guys. I am not a farmer, I have retired this year and live in Maine. Not being a farmer I appreciate you sharing how your operation runs. I never knew how involved it is to operate a farm successfully. I have been watching for a long time and have a lot of respect for what you do. Glad your not serious all the time. Awesome content. 👍👍
I'm an energy trader and 3 minutes in its fascinating to hear hedging of a different commodity. So great to see you guys making intelligent forward thinking hedging plans. Daddy cornstar is smarter than he lets on!
Hopefully this was just a scheduled farm visit discussing next year. A base cost of production for this year's crop should have been known by last November and a phased positioning approach initiated a minimum 18 months out. Sometimes asking for help is the toughest move.
@@5thgen916 i assume your costs are based off historical data and maybe weather forecasts. Are u guys deciding on what to grow 18 months out from harvest? I didnt realise you guys were working on that long a time line.
@@bensmith5413 No that is when the next fiscal years pricing for seed, chemicals, and fertilizer come out. One should already know equipment, land, and a basic cropping plan. You really should never market just for breakeven in a business environment as they advise but most farmers prefer an extremely simple marketing plan as opposed to looking at it as a value added business activity. As highlighted they usually lose money on board positions feeding those that understand trading of all types. For instance bushels sold on a futures delivery contract or on the board prior to Thanksgiving or Halloween 19 for a '20 cropping season may be on August 21 futures delivery if the carry and cost of money encourage it. Each year is different and one may roll in or roll out of a true hedge on a trading account without being a speculator due to a physical delivery contract with an end user. Lots of tax nuances I am not highlighting but the business of farming is significantly more complex if a farmer is astute. Given end users, storage, cropping decisions there is no right way to do it year over year. Just risk preference.
This is like listening to a foreign language. I know how stupid it sounds when I say I never thought of marketing with respect to farming. I guess I can learn something new every day. Thank you.
I agree. I had no idea what any of that marketing meeting meant. It’s the first time I’ve been left clueless. Well, I guess the clue was “Build more bins”.
Really enjoy your videos. Found you about 20 hrs ago and guess I'm not sleeping tonite. Also love that nice '77 Ford pickup. My car is a 20 yr old Camaro SS and I bought it new. About ready to go back to a pickup. At 68 yrs old, I have no one or family, to leave it to. Always loved those fast cars and fast horses! Now I busy just canning foods, beef, fruits and veggies for one and making quilts to sell and donate. Man, I wish I had a family like yours. Take care of them, they are precious. You are one lucky man!
Marketing is such an important aspect of farm management. Those ladies know their business. Impressive! My hubby grew up farming and says back in the day marketing wasn’t even a consideration. Then it was grow the crops, sell it after harvest and pray for the best.
I"m not a farmer. But I learned in my business to share with people what I know even if they are in competition with me. Because if they succeed I succeed too.... good goes out and good comes back...You folks are good people...Thank you for sharing.
That is really great that there are people who help farmers make more money. It's about time that farmers are actually getting money out of all their hard work instead of all the other people who touch the product until it gets to the consumer. I love and appreciate all the farmers.
Daddy Cornstar, check the valve stems on your tires. I had a similar slow leek problem on my truck. Checked the valve stem and, sure enough, it was slightly loose. Tightened it it up and no more slow leak.
Thank you for providing this information to farmers. Some farmers, like my fathers and me, have no idea how to get to that "next level" and you putting out good, reliable, helpful, and useful information makes a world of difference. Keep the good information coming. Thanks Cole!
My day isn't complete without my Cornstar Family. I love and truly appreciate you. I say a prayer for your corn and beans often. I feel vested in this crop, like it were my own. Sorry I cannot help with some good old manual labor.
Yes DC I've had a tire just like that, 3-4 psi per week. I managed to procrastinate all the way through its life cycle. All of my tires are now holding air. I know this can't last but I'm enjoying it!
The first year I planted Liberty beans I was afraid to go all in, so did halves. I pulled a daddy corn star and added a nice blank stripe in Liberty beans with the booms not rinsed of Roundup. I went all Liberty the next year. Now it’s Extend and I feel like I have a whole new lease on life!
This family farm is awesome, I worked as a farm hand on a small dairy farm in high school, and i still help out on the farm once in a while. Love to see a family because I have first hand experience with it. Keep up the amazing work and videos.
Farmers traditionally all around the world have and are generally outstanding at growing and producing crops, animals and their products etc but have always been poor / weak at selling their commodities - fact. However this situation is rapidly having to change in order to financially survive let alone thrive for a whole stack of reasons. I am a small farmer in the UK and I am a member of a farmer owned co-operative organisation through which I purchase many of my requirements to grow crops and ultimately sell crops produced. This helps me enormously to survive by advising about marketing crops as well as many other issues both short and long term.
Cole and his dad are the only people i know who can talk for 10 minutes without breathing. I really enjoyed the Marketing portion of the video along with the DC comedy segment.
Cole, I am sure things are different on the farm from how your Grandfather did things, but I think is safe to assume he would be very impressed by You, Daddy Cornstar and Cooper and how the farm is steadily transforming to clean, organized and well ran business. Farming is much different then it was in the past and it is nice to see you guys including us in the journey of how modern technology and marketing firms etc play a part in the big picture. I am waiting for Cooper to bring that ole Oliver into the shop for at least an assessment of it's needs. God Bless You All
Possible future topics: how is everything insured? Equipment, buildings, crop, life, vehicles? Safety (farming is dangerous--how are these risks managed?). Weather and its effects. I want to say something, but the marketing thing sort of blew my mind. When you had mentioned it before, I thought you were speaking of marketing your channel, as in ways to promote it. Thank you for presenting yet another side of farming of which I was completely ignorant. Its so refreshing to learn (about) something new. (I say "about" because that marketing stuff is way out of my wheelhouse of knowledge and I don't even know where to begin understanding it.)

That was a great description of what commodity marketing is all about. That was a nice letter Levi!
Very interesting, the headaches, paperwork phone calls and basic uncertainties in farming is unreal. You show all sides of the farm. Love you guys.
Cole, you should make longer videos. I just love watching them and hate when they end lmao.
