Stu Fuchs is a lifelong musician, award-winning ukulele artist and teacher of mindfulness through creative play. He has performed gypsy jazz guitar with symphony orchestras and facilitated holistic music clinics worldwide. Stu was artist-in-residence at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo NY and was awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for his work bringing healing music to cancer patients and their families. He recorded and toured worldwide with renowned sacred chant artist Snatam Kaur, performing guitar on the Grammy nominated Best New Age album “Beloved”. A long-time practitioner of yoga and meditation, his focus is to teach people from all backgrounds to develop a music practice for joy, freedom, and self expression.

This looks so simple...and I think it is. Just something different to learn. My issue with the strum even in slo mo is after you strum up with the thumb, then mute with the hand, I keep wanting to down stroke with the index instead of coming up. Arg!!
I hear you Jill… But the good news is: you are aware of that moment. Now just break it down into the super slow motion and train those new motions to go to one after another. In time, it will become as natural as other complex actions you’ve coordinated in your life. Thanks for practicing with me! 🙌🎶😊

I only know two flamenco strums so far and I keep reverting to the one of them where you only use thumb and index when I try to do this one, but with regular practice I trust that I can add this to my stringed repertoire. I appreciate your very comprehensible breakdown.
Ok Stuy....I have been practicing the rumba strum...I'm doing down up, down up with the thumb and slap all week. Had 2 days off and sat down to practice and it just came to me. I'm going to start practicing the rest soon!

Ah ha! From what I've learned in Afro-Cuban drumming class, I think the accented strums make up the "three" side of clave rhythm! Very cool.
Yes Andy! Good observation! This groove has many many names as it shows up in different cultures- sometimes it’s called “half clave” for the reason you just mentioned 🤙 Good on you for drumming!

Great practice session. I keep pausing by 3:07 and just stick practicing with the pattern for a while. Oh, and the accents remind me of the claves in Latin music. Ole!

I just had an accident 3 days ago and almost broke my right hand. I went from hysterical to depressed a few times in the past 3 days until I found out this morning that no bones were broken in my hands. The whole time my main concern was to be able to continue to practice the Ukulele..
I cannot conceive my life without taking on challenges every week with my ukulele. Thanks Stu for these valuables techniques which make our practice fruitful and our souls sing.
Hallelujah! I can relate! I was in the hospital for 6 weeks! All I wanted was my Ukulele! It was impossible with 2 IV's in my veins. So happy your hands are free! Sorry about your accident. I pray for healing.🦋

This is Exciting to me! I'm 10 days into practicing my 30 day goal. I started at 45bpm. I haven't watched your video again until now. With muted strings I was able to keep up with you in the video opening!!! I'm going to complete the 30 days before I start the next lesson. If I can do this... anyone can! 🦋

Stu I notice that it seems easier to strum with my middle finger. Is that oh? I have a long middle finger, it is that going to cause issues later and I should only do it the way you described.
Like any of my lessons, modify as you like to make it work. If you can use the index finger it may be better in the long run… Sometimes it’s best to try to push ourselves gently into new technical territory… But don’t force anything of course 😊

Hi Bill, Good question - that is really up to you. you could play this strum at any tempo it’ll still sound great… The idea is to keep the strong three accents across the pattern whether it’s slow, medium, or fast. More about the accents and the groove than speed 🤙😊🎶
@@UkuleleZen Thanks Stu. I am struggling a bit to get the accents to come out as I am perhaps a bit heavy handed on the lighter strokes. Anyway, I'll persevere and hopefully when I have the strings muted it'll soon sound similar to the rhythm I can hear when you play.😁
Hey, this is a great video. This is my first time trying a strumming pattern that isn't a claw hand or just the pad of my thumb. I'm excited but feeling challenged. My index finger is getting all scraped up, unfortunately. I have small hands, not sure if that's part of the problem. Even just using the tip of my finger, I have a small cut next to my index fingernail from practicing :/ What am I doing wrong?
