  • Thanks for watching!
I have been using speed lights for the last 10 years and have found these go to settings for times when I've wanted to freeze motion and drag my shutter to create motion blur in my backgrounds. I hope this video helps to give you a starting point in a technique that you've been wanting to explore!

I'm an event photographer in Buenos Aires and I appreciate your effort in explaining how to secure some shoots that often times can be tricky. Hope your channel grows and keep making great content!

Thanks for your comment and well wishes! Yeah sometimes the hit rate with this technique is low and or the client doesn’t like the look of the shutter drag 😳

Excellent information, since I am older than you my concern is sharp photos when they need to be sharp which makes me more concerned about the shutter speed since my 28-70 lens does not have image stabilization. I may set the speed between 100 and 200 then put the iso in auto and set the iso limit to 6400. Sometimes I may need to go as high as 12,800 which is possible with a 2.0 lens. If I get noticeable noise I use the new AI Denoise in Lightroom and that seems to do a good job. Thanks for all the good tips !!

In this case the flash is what makes your images sharp so IS or nonIS doesn’t matter as much. I appreciate your concern though! Also since you’ll be using a slower shutter speed you can drop your ISO down to 800-1000 depending how long you leave your shutter open:) I hope you try this it’s a lot of fun and takes some practice to master.

great tutorial ! which aperture and iso do you recommend for events and party, dance floor with shutter speed at 1/5-1sec and flash power at 1/64 typ ?

Thank you! I usually start around 800 ISO and move up or down depending on how bright the room lighting is. The aperture f4 usually. The background will be blurry because of the effect so I wouldn’t recommend shooting wide open. I hope this helps! Every lighting situation is different and there’s a lot of experimenting with this technique at first. Good luck and have fun with it!
