I paddled in an Ares almost identical (I believe) for the 1st time a week and a half ago at Kailua Beach. I didn't venture out far, spilled a couple times, but had a great time. Now I can't wait to try some more. Thanks for posting. Keeping me hungry!
Great videos! Looks like a ton of fun. Wish flatwater peeps like me could get a better sense of how big those waves really are. I wonder if a camera mounted on some kind of gimbal would work, and maybe give us a better appreciation of surfing in open water.
Aloha Linh.. GOPRO SUCKS ! .. because they WIDEN aspect ratio of the lens the make everything look SHORTER including the SIZE of the SURF but you can see HOW HIGH the wave shoots up you know how energy in the water .. but this is very fun .. to a point !
Haha...for sure. I'll hit some big waves and I'll look at the video. And im telling my buddies "I swear they're big" I think it's just because the vantage point of the camera. It moves up and down with the swells so never really captures how big they are either.
You sound like a NOVICE paddling coach barking out ROTE instructions pounded at you ... don't be a robot ... I agree with you BUT.. if you can get the CATCH and it FEELS SOLID WATER and you DON"T BREAK the water THEN you SAVE energy and do faster CADENCE .. especially when you're about to be crushed by a WAVE .. I change my Stroke to the water conditions and the situation.. ALSO i'm using 9 3/4 in WIDE blade with the BIGGEST Surface Area blade on the market... so I ADJUST the TORQUE based of how it FEELS ...
Sorry didn't intend to upset up.. happy your out there Paddling.. I have been outrigger Canoeing since 1996 with Wakinakona Wa state & Kamehameha HI canoe clubs Im a stroker 06 and OC1 long distance good luck and happy Paddling 😊
@@pnw_mainecoons6633 No I didn't mean to offend you either..I only pray at the altar of physics and biomechanics, not convention ... I"m the stroker for our Masters' crew.. a power stroker, I can sit in 3 or 4 too when needed toward the end of the race .. like after Diamond Head ... we've won 7 out of the last 8 Molokai Masters race consecutively.. we swamped in 2017 and lost our lead.. So in a long race I CHANGE GEARS to FIT where the CREW behind is at and can handle OR for the OCEAN conditions... i.e. when the nose is Bouncing UP and you can barely reach water.. you better be able to CATCH half blade but STILL feel a FULL BITE.. When I train for TORQUE i.e. you have to use your ENTIRE BODY.. I pretend I'm using a SUP paddle.. you cannot use your arm power...So I CHOKE IT UP to increase the LOAD on the BODY.. for longer strokes.. The closer you grip to the blade the easier it is to "ARM IT" and you do that just get on the bump... So you can change gears with your SHAFT or BLADE depth or BOTH... I can do it on the FLY based on FEEL.. not artificial grip points you mark on the shaft or blade... HOWEVER if you're using a typical small women's size 8.5 in blade as some strokers do lessen the load, then all bets are off.. I like to train under DURESS
Love your channel dude!! I’m learning to surf waves now and THIS is the content I need 🤩

Looks like so much fun and kind of scary too. What a day.
I'd have to have 2 extra scoops of rice that day.
Excellent video! Great tips! 💯🤙🏼
I feel like the camera makes waves look a lot smaller than they are... so I can’t even imagine how large they were in person! Thanks for the tips hehe
Yes, the FISHEYE lens on GoPros make it the bumps a lots smaller but you can tell from the BACK WASH how it bangs up against you

That's scary! I'm glad we don't have waves like that where I paddle!
