  • In Forbidden Lies, filmmaker Anna Broinowski investigates the case of Norma Khouri Bagain, a Jordanian women who wrote the best selling Forbidden Love, a supposedly nonfiction book about an 'honor killing' that allegedly took place in Amman. Forbidden Love book was interpreted by many Jordanians, including prominent women, as an misrepresentation of Islam. As the book's errors and impossibilities were pointed out, Khouri's story and reputation began to fall apart.

The doctor is awesome here. He really wanted to make a point that the River Jordan doesn’t run through Amman, albeit in a nice way.

Yeah especially since Khouri keeps talking about women only being able to go out with a male family member.

She is right about one thing. You can't change people's behaviour without first changing the law -- that's a stupid way to do things. You change the laws and people are made accountable to those laws when they are broken. It's difficult to determine what was going through this woman's head. A part of me thinks she genuinely wanted to raise alertness to this issue but for the most part she doesn't seem to know herself how the story ended up being so huge. She's a pawn of her own con.

@StephaneStephanie That's not what I was saying. You need to do both. I still think you *do* have to change the law first because then people who commit the crime are punished aptly for that crime. You're right you have to educate people as well.

@cardwitch91 no not really. there is a law against murder, but murders still happen. they can make honour killings against the law but people will still do it unless those people advocate and educate people in jordan about womens rights.

why did the doctor at 2:31 didnt want to check out the information for the girl hmmm?
there is a reason why, its because he didnt want to reveal such cruel information he knows whats happening, norma khouri is right they care about the image more than womens rights!
