    Funny how iconic film images could be grainy, gritty and soft in focus. Now, everything has to he pristine and ridiculously clean including the retouching.

      Joe Peffer I couldn’t agree more. I think too many people try to learn from reading specs than looking at the work of the greats.

      I think back then no one noticed, because that was the standard. Just as video game standards have changed. Back then you werent saying n64 & ps1 games looked like trash, or like early RUclips videos. They didn't look bad, but now they do. What we're used to changes.

    Well done. The only issue is that the perspective is very different. Newton used a medium format camera, 6x6 with appropriate optics and would not have used a 35mm camera. To recreate the photo correctly, it should have been some on a Hasselblad film camera and probably using Kodak Tri-x

    Stellar tribute to the photographer and a sheer pleasure to see the work that goes into making an artistic photoshoot. Impressive all around!
    Comment on the remake of the photos: 1) a major and noticeable difference in the stand alone photo is the posture of the model. In the original, the hip is thrusted forward and her back is at an about 75° angle, which gives the model a look of power and cool confidence. In the remake, the model has her hips almost straight up and her back completely straight and facing the camera. Both of these changes, make the model in the remake look as if she is posing for a photo (in the original, the model looks so natural that it almost looks like she just went outside to smoke and wait on someone). Also, the arm in the original photo is casually relaxed close to the pocket of the pants. In the remake, the model's arm is tense and on her hip. So all of these differences make for a completely different effect: cool confidence in the original vs. a posed and slightly tense look in the remake.
    2) In the nude photo, the dressed model is looking down as if thinking and casually reflecting on power. The nude model's head is almost resting on the other model and that proximity makes the two of them look intimate (as a couple). The expression on the nude's face is humble, almost innocent to the viewer. In contrast, the remake is lacking much of the nuance and complexity of the original. The remake has the dressed model looking directly at the camera (again, this makes the photo look posed. It doesnt tell us a story open to interpretation as in the original), and the head of the nude model isn't touching the head of the dressed model (this makes the two of them look like two models who are posing for a photo and who aren't close to each other). There is no trust and intimacy in the remake photo and the fact that they are shooting quickly to avoid issues with the police, makes a big difference since the nude's expression is slightly tense and alert.
    I've looked at both sets of photos to compare and contrast and this is what I have seen so far.
    All of this goes on to show that a legendary photographer isn't just capturing shots through a lens. He/she is curating a work of art, and the composition as well as mood of the photographs tells a timeless story, much like a painting or a poem ❤️

    great story, and nice to take part in the suspense of trying to recreate such an iconic shot.
    actually a really wonderful model - still: should have shot it with the original model. she instantly got the mood, it instantly clicked with her.
    always put passion over technicality, and also feeling over youth.

    • @wcor8344
      @wcor8344 8 лет назад +2

      oh boy. someone hitting the web implying they "get art" while someone else doesnt. Its easy to find flaws in anything and everything, but really the flaws are what make it beautiful in the first place. Finding beauty is hard, and that really is the point of it all. The decision making process is unique to the individual and its ignorant to knock someones genuine attempt at making something they care about. "good v. bad" isnt the point. all art shits good my dude. get into it.

    When shooting at night or before sunset in a small street with homes around and peoples living in. Always had trouble, because we talk to loud and to much. We have to whisper, once a person throw eggs from his window, but mostly police come by, because they got call for noises.

  • @kellykitkat40

    Umm.. no. In Newton's version, she appears to be almost falling back, or leaning - so, shot is somewhere between 2d and 3d, framed by the rectangular alley. It is a commentary about perspective - ignoring the more obvious theme of woman in a state of well-dressed leisure contrasted with the stone imagery of invisible labourers. And the shot of the two women, one appears to be using the other as a shield, her head almost nuzzling the other's, like that scene from the new Tarzan movie, with him nuzzling the lioness. Yet, she wears a hat, suggesting command.
    So, there is this paradox of strength and weakness. The one wearing the hat is the woman, and the other is playing the part of .. husband? Boyfriend? You may see a lesbian couple, or a female actress being asked to play the part of Romeo.. which is what was usually done when Shakespeare staged his plays, I suspect, male actors being rare, or frowned upon, then.

    • @kellykitkat40
      @kellykitkat40 8 лет назад

      A woman may put on a man's garment, but she is not to wear that which pertains to a man, such as the role of husband, father, or one who teaches (Torah and Talmud). Yentl (Barbra Streissand) crossed a line which she should not have crossed.

  • @okeimis

    No. Poner a dos modelos "casi" en la misma posición que las originales no logra ser una buena copia. Le falta la atmósfera, la elegancia, el aplomo y la sumisión de una y otra modelos.

    First photo Original better : women confident, authoritative, don't give a shit, contemptuous.
    second photo original better : Naked girl more subdue, it is a sado-maso relation, the position of the 2 heads are more subtle.
    Helmut knew what he wanted, Rankin make a pseudo-copy. Helmut direct the poses following his fantasme, Rankin direct a copy-cat. Not the same.

  • @kellykitkat40
    @kellykitkat40 8 лет назад +2

    Apparently, Newton retired, or quit, because he got sick of the fan mail, and compliments. Oh well .. the sun is a he, the moon is a she (see, Book of Isaiah, kjv), yet the sun appears smaller does it not? Paradox, is a way of understanding gender and sexuality.

    Sorry but this operation let me feel just in the 'FEaK" mode. I wouldn't watch this video again, because it makes me feel sad about the times we are living in, Completely aware it was made 15 years ago, in better creative times. Nowadays it is much-much worse...
