      It's funny, they reference C.H.U.D. in the movie at the very beginning, and that was apparently a big deal for some people in certain forums. And that gives you a hint that there's something nefarious going on in the tunnels, besides the initial prologue. But by the end of the movie, I think I would have been more entertained by having actual C.H.U.D.s coming out of the sewers, rather than these guys! :-P Because hey, if you're going to go government, go full mutant! j/k And I know being 'entertained' wasn't the main goal. But this movie was inspired by "Mirror Image", the episode of the Twilight Zone. And that's what I thought it was, a mirror world. Like the 'Mirror Universe' in Star Trek. Or that people's 'darkness' was being separated from them, and was now coming out to play from where it had been hiding, in the shadows. Or that the end of the world was near, and it was causing people to be 'split'. Something, *anything* more mysterious. Something spiritual. But no, it was clones that can be manipulated by the people above? What the heck?! o_O Was Jordan Peele smoking something when he came up with this? :-P Because it sure feels like it. I appreciate the imagery, and the symbolism...but the actual *technical* explanation? Yeah, I'm *not* sold on it. Sorry to its fans. I respect you, and I'll go to bat for your opinion, but...I gotta disagree here. I agree, I think they nailed it with this review.

      @@zymir5494 It wasn't about the ending per say, but how Adelaide got to the end. Very much so, the answer was blatantly put in our face since the beginning. Just like Captain America: Civil War; everybody knew Bucky killed Tony's parents, but it was more of the consequences that were untold because of. People forgot about the consequences.
      In Civil War, it was seeing if the freedom to take actions into your own hands, or being lead by directive order under those involved with politics would bring peace.
      In which, Steve learned not every decision was the best by the freedom of his actions &/or thoughts. And, Tony learned no matter how much he was willing to be lead by politics he'd still take things personal, even if it hurt the relations he was personally involved with.
      Here in Us, Adelaide shows she felt sympathy for her fellow tethered, and at the same time showed no remorse for her actions, and would fight to keep what some took for granted, knowing she came from less than.
      Red was born with those granted a decent living and had it snatched from her, in the end... She no longer cared for those who had more than her, but wanted to burn what they've built in order to keep others in suffering.
      A rags/disadvantaged vs riches/privileged perspective.

    I think you guys missed the ACTUAL twist. That's the reason you don't like it. The twist wasn't the clone swap ( that was extra and imo unnecessary) it's the fact that the whole movie is a parallel to the US government. The clones represent people of the poor class who are being dragged around by the ultra wealthy. The clones were created by the government. The wealthy basically feed off of them. "I suffer because of the way you live". Think about flint michigan and people being poisoned because some governor wanted to make more money. Or the opiod epidemic because pharmacies were trying to earn more. "You thrive by feeding us scraps". Thats why when they asked "WHAT are you people" Lupita the clone said "We're Americans"....also the little boy was a tether.

    The young boy was switched also if you follow the clues. He got switched when the grandma died. He wasn't talking or eating and saying new words. He got switched in the closet. That's why he popped the door opened with the toy ambulance. Then at the beach he wasn't making a sand castle he was making a tunnel.

    • @Smorgasvord
      @Smorgasvord 5 лет назад +2

      Then how did the "real" boy w/ the burnt mouth just acclimate to the tethered family so easily if he JUST joined them? If he got switched only a few weeks ago he wouldnt had been so quick to follow their program and start killing people.

  • @rahway.
    @rahway. 5 лет назад

    I don’t know if anyone has realized yet but remember when The Wilson’s first arrived to the beach? The guy who was at the boardwalk who was holding the sign when the real Adelaide passed him (Jeremiah 11:11) was killed? When Jason or the tethered version of him goes to the bathroom he sees the tethered version of the guy holding the Jeremiah verse sign posing in the American across the world t shirt pose waiting to lock hands. So what I’m getting at is that after the tethered kill they’re clones up top they come to complete the joining of hands. Also this explains the random attack of Red and the rest of the family’s doppelgängers. The mass attack was slowly starting.

  • @kharthart846
    @kharthart846 5 лет назад +2

    Maybe I misunderstood "Reds" exposition. She was speaking

The movie is a metaphor for a lot of things going on in the American (i.e. Us=US, i.e. we're Americans) culture i.e hands across America was supposed to fix all the issues in one day but yet we're trying to live like the Jonses. I've been watching 'C.H.U.D.' recently, and if you remember (if you've seen the movie, at some point in your life), the C.H.U.D.s there were created by the government, and what caused them was pretty much abandoned. My take on it is this film is about upper class vs lower class. They figuratively live “under the poverty line” we’re the same people “us” but they don’t have the same things. They’re rising above and fighting. The white family was rich and comfortable. They gave up without a fight. If the plot twist at the end didn’t happen, the story would’ve had no heart. She went through all that to be on top in the world. It’s fucking great.

    It's alright if you didn't like it, guys. I loved it, though, the third act worked for me. I'm a long time horror fan since childhood, and I would say you can call this a horror comedy masterpiece. It is very deep and there are many metaphors at play so you should definitely give it a few more viewings before deciding your final opinion because it might change how you feel about the ending, but for me it works on a literal level as well. It isn't the scariest, but it is beyond creepy and suspenseful, and so gorgeously rendered. It's a love letter to the horror genre, and I walked out of the theater with a huge smile on my face.

    My ideas for alternate endings in short. Have the real Adelaide kill the shadow of herself and then she goes to the Wilson family and see if she would be accepted. Or have both Adelaide dress up exactly the same before the fight. Have one Adelaide die and the other live, the ending would keep the audience guessing by the boy’s expression in the ambulance when he looks at Adelaide.

  • @PyramidHead316
    @PyramidHead316 5 лет назад +1

    I just came back from seeing it, and I gotta admit, you were right.
    I called the twist from the very beginning! As soon as the little girl went into the hall of mirrors, I *knew* what was going to happen! As I got more into it, I was hoping that I was wrong, and that they would go a different way with it. And then the ending came around, and it turns out I was right all along! God damn! I hate it when that happens!
    It was competently scripted, for the most part, and M'Baku (Winston Duke) killed it as the father, and the kids were alright, but goddamn that ending. And the explanation they gave near the end about what was happening didn't really make sense. Meat puppets?!? WTF!
    Honestly, I think they would have gotten a lot more mileage out of it had they gone with the alternate universe idea from the original Twilight Zone episode that inspired the movie, rather than them trying to do their own thing. When she went down into that area with the escalator, I was thinking, "This is it! This is where the portal is," or whatever the passageway was that led to another world...and no. That's not what's going on at all. It's actually something much more lame.
    I only saw the first part of this review, before seeing it, a few days ago. So I pretty much went in clean as could be. But no, it's just not as major a deal, in the end. I guess we're supposed to interpret that she pretty much 'forgot' about her family, and started to believe she was a clone herself. And her plan, with that 'Hands across America' ending! What in the hell?! O_O I know there's all sorts of hidden meanings in it, and so forth. I'm not unaware of that; it's Jordan Peele. But the basic story, it's just...ugh. I'm just not impressed.
    In the end, it just came down to another government project. They just looked goofy, too; doing that 'dancing', and standing there mimicking. And I didn't even overhype it, like other people; I was just hoping for a decent thriller, and horror movie. Which it is, in some ways. The movie is *good* at what it wants to do, sometimes, when it feels like it. But the basic premise...like you guys said, he's just capable of so much more. It's just lost potential. *shakes head* I think this is one of the longest comments I've ever left on one of you guys' reviews, and I know it's long af! You don't have to tell me that, RUclips! :-P But this movie...it's just...
    That's just imo. I still support Peele, in anything he does. I'll see it again...with the commentary, when it comes out on Blu-ray. ;-D

    the real twist was the little boy was switched the year before and the fake mom finds out at the end thats why she smiled at the boy(jason) to let him know and why she screamed noo when the boy(pluto) was getting burned. basically jason really is pluto and pluto is really jason just traumatized.and all the kids were half clones and half real because the mothers were swapped and they can control each other who ever has more focus can take the wheel. you gotta watch it more than once to catch all the clues.

    Jordan Peele is the new M Night Shyamalan, except his movies don't suck. Horror movie's are now more thought provoking, making you want to think once leaving the theater, instead of not wanting to leave the theater due to fear. As i said before the Exorcist is hands down the greatest horror movie of all time. An updated version was released in 2000 and think the theatrical release was 1973 and strikes fear. Also, the real reason i'm even posting this and hopefully Jordan Peele will answer this one day is When the real Adelaide confronts the Tethered version that everyone has been assuming up to this point is the real one that the government basically conducted an experiment and says a line about how basically the Tethered are 2 bodies with one soul and dies at the end does this mean her, The true Adelaide's, soul is free? At the end it seems like the son realized this as well when her whole mood changes and she smiles back at him.

    I saw it 3 times this weekend. This is a film that requires multiple viewings - I dont care how seasoned of a reviewer someone is, this film needs many viewings. EVERY issue you have is addressed in the film- including the reason they were created in the first place, by who and even why the project was abandoned. Watch it again and PAY. ATTENTION. TO EVERY. SINGLE. WORD. "RED" SAYS IN THIS FILM. Her voice was so wierd I think people were not listening to words. - they were listening- impressed/ freaked out/interested in Luputa's choice as an actress over the context of what Red was saying.
    Those of us born before millenial (the 80s) are very aware (and get/got) the Hands Accross America bit. Plus it's spelled out in the film.
    Real Adelyne had on a HAA teeshirt (which by the way, you received when you PARTICIPATED in it - there was no internet back then so anyone couldn't just order one online - you had to be there). So when the switch happened - real Adyline got the idea from what she remembers as a child on the surface world. Is it the "best" plan in the world? No, but hell - real Adylines education stopped when the switch happened so her mind is limited to that of a child.
    The third act is fantastic - watch it again and LISTEN to every word! Jordan Peele is THAT filmmaker that he doesn't use pointless dialogue or actions - which is how I knew there was something up with this family from the trailers when Adyline: A. Had to teach her BLACK child rhythm👀 B. Her ass snapping on the 1 & 3 instead of the 2 & 4 😂😂 - I KNEW a black director (as smart as J.P) didn't put that in for nothing. I thought the twist (from the trailers) was going to be the entire family were clones and the real versions are coming to reclaim their lives - but it was just Adyline.
    Just watch it again - LISTEN and let the movie wash over you - ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT.
    People are use to gimmicks at the end of films and Peele delivered an actual story that makes people use their brains and people want all these concrete answers - nope 😂

      The audience reviews are going to be divided. Those who like to be spoon fed their story and others who like to analyze. Neither one is wrong, but this movie is going to go over a lot of people’s heads. This movie is scaret than Get Out because it’s deeper than race or class he’s attacking and addressing human nature of survival and how we create societal structures and regulations to control and manipulate. If you noticed at the end the helicopters were still monitoring the uprising. That is why Adeline the tethered said to her tethered son Jason “Don’t worry things will go back to normal “because she recognized the powers that be (government) would control the new order which would be the tethered. It doesn’t matter that’s the darkness’s of human nature. The tethers share the same souls of their counterparts. They were stuck down below the sunken place/tunnels because of their mentality and brainwashing due to propaganda. It’s the nurture vs nature debate and at the end Adeline assimilated but could not change who she was. The Bible text of Jeremiah speaks of God sending a punishment for his children breaking their promises to him and serving their needs and other idols. We are a selfish, narcissistic country who worships technology and social constructs. We abandoned our fellow family for prosperity. We dehumanizined them and we’re desensitized to their suffering. In the Bible it talks about duality all the time, to thine own self be true, confess your sins, treat your neighbors the way you would treat yourselves. So in the context of this verse God states I will send a evil you cannot control, you will cry out and I will not hear you. Their is no greater evil then the evil and in dealt with trauma in ourselves. The true origins of horror comes from the very psychological trauma humans made explanations on how to deal with of life. Death, separation, fear, greed, jealousy, wrath all comes from the origins of horror to label the unexplainable and how it makes us face our mortality, flaws, and humanity or lack thereof. I believe Jordan Peele did this.

    To me this movie sucked. It lost me pretty early on and didn't recover. and like they kind of mentioned by the time the twist came it was too late and wasn't as hard-hitting as it could have been. My main reasons off the top of my head are:
    1.) They halfway explain what was going on with the tethered and it would have been a lot better if they didn't say where they came from in my opinion or if it was something else other than a government experiment. Like another dimension or something.
    2.) The father's actions once the tethered family showed up we're just not realistic at all in my opinion and really took me out of the movie.
    3.) Where TF did they get the outfits but more so than that all of those scissors. Were they also cloning Staples stores down there???
    4.) Why was no one looking for a gun?
    5.) Why would the real "mom" want to kill anyone other than her evil clone?

    This movie had some issues as most movies do when you break it down from a logical perspective. But I believe most of those who were disappointed were so because of their own expectations not because of anything the movie promised. I don’t recall seeing a trailer with a voice over stating something like “this movie’s ending is a must see to believe”. There wasn’t any over the top ad campaign for this. Peele is guilty of one thing...having a deep well received first film. Now everything has to be on that level or its horrible 😂. Sounds like the M Night Shyamalan effect. These directors are human too. In this day and age it’s hard to have something be original, with a great unseen twist and remain logical. Also, wanting answers for everything is a little ridiculous. There would need to be an entire movie to explain the “Tunnel World” and how it was built. Maybe that could be a prequel. It’s like wanting an explanation for how Darth Vader became XXXX’s father all in the Empire Strikes Back. And finally expecting the Red to act logically after being kidnapped at such a young age and then living with the crazy duplicates for so long is absurd. Again, this movie had plenty of issues but we the audience and our expectations are a large part of the problem.
