True about the information availability. When I built my first engine and car I relied on a MOTORS manual. Still have it actually. Awesome reference source. Wish I had the whole collection.
I've ben rebuilding THE 400 SENC 1977 ,SOME ARE CALD 375 BUT,! ITS A GREAT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ,ONE OF MY FAVORITE 🤔 yes! That top hat was a great idea WOO.
Don’t worry about something “completely different”. Lol TH400 stuff is ALWAYS interesting. I’ve been eyeballing that B&M pan. The prices really jumped on those. But it honestly looks like the very best pan for TH400.
You can use muratic acid to strip the coating off bolts and nuts if your in a pinch... just don’t leave any out it will rust stuff in your shop and rinse parts with water ...
the trans u want is a 02xx 400r turbo it will have 02xx welded on the bell housing they are good to 800 hp stock they have the heavy duty 8 bolt pump heavy clutches stage one shift kit stock saves a lot of money on a build . they are called strip or heavy application transmissions and it has a o ring on the tube which is better. u can get them out of heavy trucks and motor home but most have the 450 hp 454 in front of it on motor homes . they are perfect for a street build but it has most of the parts to build a 2000 hp trans they are from 1980 to 2000 still with the o ring on tube they sell them as a crate trans. i got 4 setups free in the last 2 years with the 450 hp 454 modeled after the 70 chevelle 454 ho
Awesome video. Learned alot of info. I have a 1979 chevy van I belive pop had the 350 turbo replaced with a 400 turbo trans back in 2015 when the original trans failed. Anyways he said it was better on fuel with the new trans. The van sat since 2017 at my mother house I've towed it home to start working on it. But back last year I got it running for the first time with fresh gas and carb clean etc. Anyways it wouldn't go in drive or reverse as in the van wouldn't move some smoke and I noticed the fluid flew put the dip stick like you've mentioned. Anyways I made sure the breaks weren't seized up and I added 2 or so quarts or atf and a quart or so of Lucas. Anyways it did shift in and out of gear then but felt kind of under powered. Not sure what's wrong perhaps the TQ converter is shot. What's your thoughts ?
The 400 Chevy is a small block yes but the big block is actually a 402 c.i. I've never seen or heard of a 400 BBC. I use to have to drill 350 heads to use on the 400 small block
Is the "Verify the Full Mark" the same with the 700R4. Mine didn't have a Dipstick when I got it and I want to make sure I have the correct amount of Fluid in my Transmission ! Thanks.... Liked/Subscribed !
I'm glad you showed how you add a drain plug. I've been thinking of doing the exact same thing. Do you tighten the bolt in the nut before you weld it inside the pan? Looks like doing that with a flat washer might help keep it flat against the pan.
When you mark the dipstick at the top of the pan rail for the full mark with the pan off, after installing the pan do you add the transmission fluid to the mark cold and run the transmission to get it warm and refill to the mark? If so it would be normal to show overfull when the transmission is cold?
You mentioned using the small yellow tag on the side to identify the transmission. Do you know of a resource to decode it because I can't find a reference "84 MF" anywhere.
I have an 86 G30. I see I have that same pan with the indentation around the bolt hole. Trying to determine which kind of transmission I have so I can source the parts. Currently it only moves in reverse and I’d like to try and fix it or replace it with a newer one. Is a swap possible or would I have to Chan my engine out as well?
I see both levels referenced. Always seemed odd if it’s 1/4 above as that would ensure leaks at the gasket. I market both levels on the dip stick and am going with “level” until sure.
@@firstgenerationgarage2803 You can if you get a top hat style dipstick. I use the Proform 66182 about $40 on Amazon. Has a locking stick and fits everything I have put it in so far.
Sir, what dipstick would fit a turbo 400 behind a 351w? I don’t have a midplate. Unknown crossmember. Locking or non would be okay. I don’t know what will fit the foxbody and my searches didn’t give me a definitive answer. I don’t want to do flexible or lokar. Any ideas? Thank you
Then you will be experimenting and fabricating something to make one fit. What's wrong with flexible tube? I use them all the time with zero issues. They allow me to shove the motor back closer to the firewall in my drag cars, without the factory tube in the way.
So its like you read my mind. So that transmission i said I was gonna rebuild, finally pulled it out and I been looking for 2 days now online, code: 79-cm still no clue what the cm is. PS I don't got face book :(
Not directly, but many times I have gone through the lower gear train. Part of that is removing the output shaft. Swapping it would be a direct exchange, but it’s one of the first pieces to assemble.
@@mountainsgarage ok cool. I have a 64 Cadillac with the 429. And I’m taking out the jetaway and putting a th400 from a 65 Cadillac since that’s I think the only year th400 that will bolt up to the 429. But it’s a long output shaft. So if I swap it for a short shaft then it’ll be about the same length as the jetaway and I won’t have to cut the drive shaft. If it all works out right I hope
@@HalloweenHunters "About" wont cut it. It'll have to be the SAME length or you'll end up cutting the driveshaft. Personally, I'd just take the driveshaft in and have it done VS. Tearing an entire trans apart to change the tailshaft.
Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.I Enjoy your videos keep them coming..
Thanks for the video, brother. really helpful 👍

Thanks for the information 👍🏼
Ok, my first car was a '56 Olds, and I sold a really pretty nice 48 Buick to buy my B&M Hydro stick 4 speed.
Shawn mine has a CA-67 "space" 55003 and has 8 bolt pump housing

Lots of people use too try to shim up the floppy filter " DON'T DO THAT " 😀
Another great class. Good stuff, thanks.

Just I just snug it up and tack it, then remove and weld it up.

Some references say the FULL mark should be a 1/4" above the mating surface. As is my stock TH400 from 1969. Is that ok too?

Where can I find the place to look up a 1984 turbo 400 with tag FI ? I can only find up to 1982 searching
So if you have a th 400 that has the O-ring on the dipstick you can replace it with the top hat? Thanks

I know a lot of people that call 3 inches 4.
What is a 385 ? Or 375 ?
A TH375 in a nutshell is a TH400 with a TH350 spline output shaft.
I think I killed my th400 but I'm going to try to rebuild it In my room any suggestions for me
Great! There are free downloads of the ASTG manual online.
If I can help feel free to reach out!
Yea, DON'T do it "in your room". You will have a hell of a mess to deal with after.
Yep DON'T.
you made a mistake last chipped a case try this one i 425 direct drum in a 400 well you know what happened next haha never do that
Motors manual says its a 350
