    Preach needs to just conscript some friend, or family member that has never played wow, and record what they do. It would be interesting to see someone dropped off in the world who had no experience what so ever. Maybe for the sake of things; start them at level one?

      Exactly what happened to a friend of mine. It was shockingly similar to this video- you blunder confused through an abbreviated, 'i didnt progress through this expansion and am only told the very last patch content' version of each expac, and then end up in legion with almost no explanation of this stuff that you've never done before, just like him. Stuff that happened naturally over 2 years is condensed again, so it's similar.

    I can relate to so much that you're talking about. Started wow in Legion but about 2-3 months late as fresh to MMO endgame. Gold is the biggest issue i have had in legion. I didn't start legion with all the gold from garrison farming and haven't really been arsed to learn how to Auction house. The time gating on the classhall I remember being the out-must extent of bullshit when I capped. I was now not only months behind my friends who were crushing EN but also had to wait and wait for this to finish to recieve my last relic slot. I shit you not, once i got it it boosted my dps by 30% straight off( which wasn't much since i was shit)

  • @snarf1851

    Coming from someone who started in WOD quit and came back to BFA just to quit again here are some issues with being a new player.
    1.Leveling without BOA gear. So often do you get a tank who just rushes the bosses and doesnt kill the trash, if you die when this happens youll often be stuck in the dungeon entrance unable to leave the first room and no one will come back to help you. This was a big issue for me in WOD when i first started playing and didnt have a single BOA.
    2. Group finder sucks for learning late game content thats actually somewhat hard. No one communicates and the groups tend to slowly disband and becomes a huge waste of time. Ive even had multple instances where i join a group say im new and need to learn a few things and just get kicked.
    3. Guilds don't like to accept and help new players. Now there are "helpers" guilds but they dont typically do late game content. Trying to find a guild that will help you learn late game content and get geared is nearly impossible even if you have prerequisite gear.
    4. Everything is expensive and there is very little gold to be made in comparison. Expecially in BFA when professions make chump change while BOE's make all the gold you need.
    For me its not currently a game worth playing. For an MMORPG it does so many things wrong, The economy is bad, BFA hands you late game gear like its candy, Pathfinder is probably the worst idea ever(expecially when you skip an expansion its like a slap in the face for not giving them money at the time and hell if im going to waste my time on that just to get flying in an expansion no one is playing), the list can go on and on. These issues are in the modern game i still love this game in general. Playing on private servers running old expansions has been a lot of fun and i cant wait for classic to come out.

      A halfway MMO experienced "new" player to WoW...will seek out information, and be met with an absolute wealth at their disposal. Wowhead, Icy Veins, Trade Chat (when they're not just being trolls), random friendly players, or getting into a guild...the information they need (Go to X, farm X, do this it's not hard, jump into LFR...even if you die in the first 5 mins, don't matter) will be quickly made available to them.

    • @GdotWdot
      @GdotWdot 6 лет назад +1

      So, when I was playing around 7.2 I met a 110 mage who said he dinged a few weeks earlier. He didn't know what Artifact Knowledge was. He was Czech and his English was OK but not really stellar, so I guess he didn't exactly read everything that came up. Truth be told, class halls left a lot to be desired in terms of user experience - Dreamgrove's map for example might be the #1 worst map I have ever seen in my life, and so by a large margin. There's so many very intricate yet absolutely essential systems in the game these days, and they just blow up in your face the moment you hit max level, with no warning. And if the WoW team aims to make the game accessible, wherewith I don't take issue - that's just what I assume they're aiming for - then they have to make a better effort.

I mean it would take less energy to be that way to a potentially day 1 player but some people just cant not be jerks

    • @Anaphriel
      @Anaphriel 6 лет назад +24

      Firstly - This was never a series about the 1-110 experience. He laid it out in the introductory vid that his intent was to Boost and see how long it would take to get to AOTC from a "fresh player perspective".
      Secondly - "Here's a ticket to all the cool stuff, where everyone else is...but...we recommend you don't actually use it" will work on...*maybe* half the people who buy the game. At least those with any level of experience. For those looking to get right in and copy what they see RUclipsr's doing, you're damn right they're going to skip the time gating that is levelling to 110.

    • @ChEILoZ
      @ChEILoZ 6 лет назад +9

      Anaphriel Doesn't matter. You buy it you get a boost, blizz says you shouldn't use it and start a level 1. If you ignore that then it's not in blizzards hands to guide you

      @cairnebloodfist3347 6 лет назад +12

      That's completely irrelevant. Blizzard knows some people are going to skip to 110 anyways, it's probably the majority of the reason they got the Legion preorder. There is no defending the horrendous fresh boost experience.

    They should remove the 110 boost service for your account until you have leveled a character to 110. For new players buying the expansion and do not have a character above level 2 should just get the message "free 110 boost after reaching 110 on a character. • @zach6395
      @zach6395 6 лет назад +3

      I agree and disagree with that and would compromise between the two. I believe that in order to understand your character, you need to go from level 1-110. On the other hand, we're at a point where all the relevant content is at the end of the game. I would be more in favor of keeping the boost to the start of the current expansion. So 100 for now, and you get ready to start the current expansion, *if* you do not have a capped character. With the capped character on the account, you should then be able to boost to 110.

    • @Blutnymph

  • @kielwymer
    @kielwymer 6 лет назад +4

    I feel like there's a misinterpretation of intent here. The 100 boost is for now, this solves MANY of the issues you mention as you level through Legion content appropriately.
    The 110 boost is targeted for BFA, not the current game. I don't understand why a brand new player would even buy the game including an expansion that isn't out yet (except by mistake). Blizzard don't intend for new players to get the BFA preorder and play legion I think.
    It's perhaps wrong of them, they should see that this will be a thing, but they've never really targeted max-level boosts at current expansion except at the end of that content right before the next expansion releases.

Plus I like to run multiple keys and the fact that people expect everyone to be 950 plus for simple 6-10 plus keys is ridiculous. You can boost yours too a certain point but after you get it too high it’s better / more fun to do keys in your ilvl range.

    Hello Mike, There is this guy called SoupaSoka here on youtube and he has only played vanilla servers ever since vanilla was released and he decided to try Legion (or rather any expansion at all) for his first time ever a couple of months ago. First he leveled to like level 15 and then he boosted his character to 100, leveled to 110 and then he made a video comparing it to vanilla. He is also leveling a character from scratch (currently level 70 something and doing wrath content)
    It's very interesting to see how a ''new'' old school player thinks about everything we have now in the game and some things he finds very interesting that I have just taken for granted or forgotten that it wasnt like that back in vanilla. Anyway, I just wanted to share this as its pretty interesting and I thought you would like to take a look at it. :)

      To be honest that's a pretty shitty way of addressing the issue - "it's okay, we threw up a 3 line warning not to do this so we're completely covered". It also doesn't change the fact that most of the complaints would be reached on their own anyway even if a new player were to level from lvl1. WoW isn't very friendly to players who don't constantly read up about it on fan sites and that's something Blizzard needs to constantly keep in mind if they want their game to continue getting new players.

    • @user-zd7jn4kj7c
      @user-zd7jn4kj7c 6 лет назад +6

      I rekon most new players will take the oppertunity to get a "free" max level character, or will use it to skip the later stages of levelling where it really slows down. If people heeded the warning in most cases you wouldn't have people eating tide pods.

  • @Drummajorguy762
    @Drummajorguy762 6 лет назад +7

    The 110 boost comes with battle so you can also start the new expansion. I feel like a new player would buy in for a lot less for the 100 boost and it is a lot more friendly because i finally used my 100 boost a few days ago and it explained a good bit and led me by the hand for a while with a smooth transition from introducing the artifacts, class halls, etc. picked my quest zone and i was off. the 110 boost can use a bit more introduction i agree.

    • @Anaphriel
      @Anaphriel 6 лет назад

      Part of the issue comes with the fact that the Boosts are meant to be for those to jump right in to *current* content. Unfortunately, it's the previous 6 months of content that sets up where we are now. The boost would be *WAY* more effective if it was made available on launch for BFA, but of course, very few people will use it as such.

  • @loser-nobody

    Wow. This is startling to see as a long-time player who decided to take the bench and just play along for the journey (aka casual) after the start of WoD. I re-rolled onto a new server for Legion and I'm taking my time, finishing _Loremaster_ and setting up my self-sufficient alt-empire I've been so used to having over the years.
    I still don't have a max character, my highest level is 104, I hardly have any AP, and it's outrageous to see how much you're immediately ahead of me with a 110 boost.
    While I disagree with a few of your sentiments, *this video rings true to the nearly altruistic betterment of the game that I subscribed to this channel for in the first place.*
    Thanks man.

    After watching this you definitely confirmed my hunch of leveling to 110 instead of boosting to re-learn the game (haven't played since 2015). Also, I wish you worked form Blizzard so they would listen to you; for the first few hours of play, I was just wandering around aimlessly trying to found out how to get to the Broken Aisles and had no clue the legion quest began in front of Org, so annoying. Anyways, thanks for the vid!

    The main problem with this boost is that it's MEANT to start BFA content right away, not to play legion content. The main problem then becomes new players being able to buy the boost before BFA comes out and trying to play legion at the end of it.

    • @TheMiddleAgedKidVideos
      @TheMiddleAgedKidVideos 6 лет назад

      This. They don't need to explain artifacts, class halls, etc if you are boosting because those won't be in BFA. It's not meant for you to play Legion. The fact that is is available 9 months out is the issue not the mechanics of the boost.

    1) Shown the massive impact of essences and inability of new players to acquire them
    2) Heart of Azeroth Grind

    4) Azerite armour grind
    Genuinely think the outcome would have been so much worse for a new player compared to Legion !

    This video series was kind of doomed from the concept simply because as you say a new player will not know anything about the game. But that also includes tactics for raids and dungeons and everything you've already completed on mythic. They won't understand itemization or navigation of menu's or the basics of addon's and keybinding etc. Your video series ends up a complete success even when starting a brand new character because you know how the game works on both ends start and finish, I don't believe any fresh player is going to be able to power through the 110 maze to get Ahead of the Curve in the manner this portrays. It's a nice idea and as close to the fresh experience you as a player can get but it's not really accurate. The basics of enchanting will be beyond people who've just started.

    I started WoW fresh at the latter end of ToS. So i can relate to this video quite a bit. Took me a while to find a decent guild that was clearing Heroic Kil'Jaden and would accept my item level. Since Antorus came out I changed guilds to do mythic raiding. Didn't really run into that much toxicity besides if i did something stupid in a mythic+ not knowing the mechanics despite watching a guide or two. I 100% agree the biggest issues i ran into was how poor of a position a boost leaves you in. I was utterly confused about quests, where to go, what was what, etc...

    "Blizzard just killed their own content"
    Unfortunately thats my biggest gripe with WoW as of late. Its such a zerg to the newest thing that old content that may be a tier behind, even if its great, is immediately made irrelevant. Wish they could find a way to make old raids more of a challenge and viable like they did with keystones.

      No. This is a classic "you think you do, but you don't"-scenario; think about it, do you really want to go back and run ToS and NH every week? In fact we've had a period during legion where a lot of classes needed NH 2set or a trinket (think convergence of fates, it's still relevant on decent ilvl), and most people didn't like it.

    • @Xfacta12482
      @Xfacta12482 6 лет назад +3

      I think thats a bit of an extreme example of something that made it more or less required. It's just a shame that there is so much old content and you can go to Argus and surpass an entire expansion of pretty well made content in an hour or two. Anything outside of Argus/Antorus right now is basically pointless to even waste your time on. Theres a happy middle-ground in all of this. There's some design out there that will let new content co-exist with old content without just shoving it off to the side and pretending it doesn't even exist anymore.

    I mean, Blizzard does give a warning before using a boost that they recommend that a new player starts off with a level 1 rather then boosting. If a new player chooses to ignore that, it's quite obvious they'll learn slower. I do agree there should be some kind of guidance but I do at the same time think Blizzard was aiming those boosts to players who know what they're doing.

    I think you bring up a real awesome point. Just re-joined last week after being away since WoD, and got the $50 bfa pre-order + legion with 110 boost. After boosting up my hpriest and wanting to dive into content I immediately had no idea what the fuck was going on (I've been playing since vanilla and have at least leveled through every xpac but only hit endgame in Wrath, Pand, and WoD). So I took my 100 Paladin that I *very conveniently had from WoD* and went through it old-school to figure out what the hell was going on. Had I not had that paladin it definitely would have been absolutely brutal.

    I would never recommend a character boost to a new player looking to try out World of Warcraft for the first time. This video is a great example of why thats a real bad idea. A better idea for a new player would be to level a character from scratch. Especially now at the tail end of Legion, theres plenty of time for that player to comfortably learn all the things WoW has to offer before BfA is released.

  • @cavyart
    @cavyart 6 лет назад

    The biggest flaw of this whole experiment is that you decided right away to boost a warlock without trying or playing any other classes first. The boost is a big no takey backey so a new player would want to be absolutely SURE that's the class they want to use their boost on. My boyfriend just this christmas finally decided to play WoW with me(i've been since vanilla) so we got him a decent gaming laptop and I purchased his account as a Christmas present. We started new toons together me a Pally tank and him a Hunter (at my suggestion). We leveled together till about 53 and in his spare time he made and played quite a few other classes to see if he liked them including a monk, warrior, pally ect. He also tried quite a few classes with the trial character feature. He ultimately discovered that he doesn't like caster classes (mage, warlock, priest) and felt he wasn't skilled enough yet to be good at a melee class (warrior, pally, DK) Eventually after a month or so he decided he'd really gotten the hang of the hunter and went ahead and boosted that character to 100 so we could play legion content together. He's doing really well and is now starting to get more comfortable with other classes and has started leveling a druid. He worked hard to unlock flying in legion (with a lot of my help of course). I really do believe that there is NO way he would have played this game for more than even a day without me helping him right off the bat. But he did say he learned more by just figuring things out on his own when I wasn't around to kinda do it for him.

      But then you have this problem where you can't just play with your friends quickly (and before you say "Just level new characters together." Nope, there have been enough drama times as proof that this doesn't tend to work out). An okay compromise would have been to give a 100 boost but with ilvl 775 gear (or whatever the ilevel you gain from normal dungeon drops) and have you run the quests and order halls properly (without the needless time gating this late in), this way you are still cutting out a ton of the grind and will have an easier leveling experience that gradually introduces new players to Legion systems and currencies.
      Granted, those new players still won't know what the hell they are doing and will not know what raiding or mythic+ is. I mean hell, there is still a stigma surrounding Mythic dungeons and that it is some kind of hardcore content.

      Make a better tutorial system if you don't have a 110 on your account. You need a minimum knowledge of systems and features to have fun in the game: so give them pointer to the basic, and find a way to express the rest; raiding (all modes) m+ and pvp

      The thing is if you're committing yourself to having a non-skewed test you should have the dedication to show what it truly would be like starting a new account. What new person pre-orders an expansion for a game they haven't even played before? I know I wouldn't. Colin isn't the one being stupid, it's you. When scientists run experiments they don't just skip to the conclusion. A big part of WoW and your experience playing it will be leveling and seeing new things and learning how to actually use your character and to skip that like a brand new player would even know how to get to Argus and get 960 ilvl and raid Mythics or even have the skill to do that is one hell of a stupid assumption and a downfall of this video.

    As someone who recently came back after playing at the start of Legion a little bit, how did you get so many gear upgrades on Argus so quickly? I was ~830 when I started, and after playing through a bunch of Argus, catching up a little, doing the LFRs I'm allowed to do, I am now 857. Argus is still very hard, I can do fine by killing mobs one-by-one and being careful.
    Are there things I should be doing differently? I've got enough to buy one piece of Relinquished Gear, but that's really the only significant upgrade I've gotten from Argus.

    best thing ive seen in a long time. i actually enjoy the game by doing the same thing. going to a completely new server and grind my way up to max level and start playing there on my own with the intention to raid as high as possible without joining a guild.

      Bombademar It's infinitely harder than any other hybrid class. Every single hybrid class I've played has gotten to 960 within a month of starting it. I've given up on every, single, pure dps class because the dps pug experience is atrocious

      Siren Watcher Summoning stones are actually a massive deal in high keys. You can go swap talents out mid dungeon by just double summoning them back. A good example is court of stars where there is a fair bit of aoe before the third boss, and the third boss requires more defensive play. It's very common for resto druids to hearth out after 2nd boss to swap from feral affinity to guardian affinity for example. Also, if you are pugging and it doesn't go well so someone needs to go repair b/c no hammer or repairbot, you just hearth out and get summoned. I've had numerous groups just fall apart because someone had to repair, and numerous keys that a summoning stone has made or break the deplete.

    Yo Preach, I got back into the game about a year ago after not subbing since Vanilla. I think what I did made the game super enjoyable. I played a new character up until around Wrath content, then used my lvl 100 boost to play through all the Legion content and was blown away by how fun Legion was.

    Can't lie, as spot on as the series is as a whole, this first episode is full of entitlement in terms of what new players should expect, a simple press of M or reading the quest will tell you where to go, which I'm sure any new player can figure out whose played most any other PC game, secondly, boosting as a brand new player and complaining about not knowing what's going on is like starting a new show on Season 7 and complaining about not knowing the characters or plot, don't skip ahead

    Such a crying shame to think of people playing WoW for the 1st time with a boosted character. Missing out on so many memories. Theyre putting in all these systems in their game that TAKE GAMEPLAY away from players.

    • @Anaphriel
      @Anaphriel 6 лет назад

      The system is in place...but a choice. After playing for over a decade, I appreciate the means to not have to slog through it. But if I was a new player completely, I would play a toon from 1-110 so I knew what the hell I was doing...then boost a secondary that I was interested in.

    I wish this was more of a guide tbh. I had no idea there was a legendary ring in Argus, never knew the reason to go there other than story. I feel like you've just skipped the entire gearing process already, as you are about to start Mythic+ already and then normals raids very very very soon. This video kind of is only for top end people going "HUR DUR SEE IT IS EASY" instead of actually educating the playerbase on how to get better / where to get better like so many of your videos. Still love ya, just disappointing that this was kind of a nothing video.

      This is not a guide. It's a experiment regarding pug toxicity.

    • @madzzzey
      @madzzzey 6 лет назад

      This is not skipping the gearing presses, or elitist, don't be that way. He starts at a basic boost, new player/getting back to the game experience. It's his reflection on how the systems work, how the experience feels compared to what he knows it - it's nice reflection on the new feeling and how to improve it.

    • @ConnorCoultrup
      @ConnorCoultrup 6 лет назад

      What he says is certainly valuable for sure, and he is correct in that Blizzard really needs to do more to help direct new players who use a boost especially for their first character. I just wish it was more in depth I suppose, as while he highlights incredibly important points he doesn't actually do anything to assist in solving the issue, just says "This is a problem.". Still liked the video, still rated it a thumbs up, will very happily watch all his following videos to come - I just wish the video had taken a slightly different direction is all.

      Really, you didn't know about the Argus legendary ring? Have you not completed the main Argus storyline? That leads you into the raid, and has a quest that rewards you with a free legendary ring.
      If you haven't yet completed the Seat of the Triumverate dungeon quest then it's the one after that.

  • @MrMurminator

    I didn't start legion at the start I started in the middle, literally just did all the quests I was given with no idea where any of them would lead and got to a reasonable item level. Honestly the hardest bit I found was getting into a raid team that wasn't struggling to clear normal I essentially had to join a raid team far bellow my skill level to get some kills under my belt before I could join a better one just so I could prove I wasn't a moron. Obviously going to be a little different for a new player but that was my returning player experience (Though I level'd I didn't use a boost because this was a good few months back now). The druid order hall had a nice intro to it at the time as well.

  • @ItsSvetsi
    @ItsSvetsi 6 лет назад

    Interesting to see how the starting experience for boosted characters plays out in terms of giving the player information on what to do and where to go.
    It seems to me like Blizzard may have thought this would primarily be used by more experienced players ho want to skip leveling and get into the end game.
    Maybe quite a large oversight on their part as, with this being given to everyone who buys Legion, new players are 100% going to use it. Even watching this as a player who knows and has played Legion, I was kind of lost.
    This is something Blizz definitely should look into fixing up. A few paragraphs of text and a couple of extra quest markers would make all the difference to someone who has literally no idea what's going on.

    So I was thinking about getting into WoW for the first time (I have always wanted to play, just never pulled the trigger). I assume the best thing for me would to just start as a fresh level 1 account and just level up to cap from there?

    From your experience, what's the fastest way to level from 100-110 now? I just boosted a new character. I have one capped character but that was from like November when you had to grind grind grind. Has anything changed? Is questing still the way to go?

    So true about the 110 boost error message, I got it when I was just starting out and it almost put me off the game. (you're also completely right about them killing their content with the boost by having you go straight to argus, I didn't even know about all the broken isles content until I finished that campaign....)

    As a returning player, I'm terrified of Argus honestly. I left the game at iLvl 840 and have only just made it up to 870. I have been trying to grind out flying and the reputations for the allied races but should I just go to Argus asap?

    Was actually tanking a dungeon for a mate who was helping his uni flatmate through some content as it was his first time playing and it absolutely boggled my mind when say the end of the dungeon he asked me what is artefact power and what does it do, upon explaining to him he needed to go back to his order hall to choose traits for his weapon I was even further taken back when he responded with the question "what is an order hall and how do I get there" blizzard do a pretty shitty job as you see in the video. And I do believe it is perfectly fine for a brand new player (especially one with friends already accustomed to the game) to want to hop straight in and skip the now 100 soon to be 110 levels of completely irrelevant (not from a story perspective but that's besides the point) content holding them back from playing with their friends.

    I always want to get back into WoW i have not played in about 4 years, and when i say played i mean, i have never seriously played the game and invested real time into it, i have logged on tried to level for a few hours then logged out and not tried passed that... it's really hard to play the game for large chunks of time for me, it's kind of a bummer because the game is is amazing from an RPG stance, it is just a little to grindy for me at this point in my life, Great content as always preach.

    As someone who started playing in Legion, let me tell you that the knowledge you have of the game systems will help more than anything else possibly could. For example, it took me months to start doing Mythic+ because the system simply wasn't explained to me. I had no idea what a key was, I didn't know where to go to even get a group for a Mythic dungeon, and I was petrified by the word 'Mythic'. In my newbie mind that meant 'oh god that's the word they use for the hardest content in the game, that's way beyond me I guess I'll stick to Heroic'.

  • @Lycanite

    The boost should be to something like 108 if you don't have any 110 characters yet so that you can go through some of the intro stuff, get a taste of world quests and then be all familiarised when at 110.

    I glad to see that you have followed through with this idea, I shows that my difficulty with returning to this game hasn't purely been my own fault. ( i posted on your last video with the gearing challenge) However you have started with an advantage that I didnt get which is gear that is 870, emissary missions wtf is that, , , I understand you have the knowledge of the game and this is common practice for you to use these tools to gear up, I simply have not been given this information or a clue that I could research to learn about. I really hope this doesnt come across as bitchy or whinny I've enjoyed your content for a long time but watchng this video has basically cemented my choice to leave WoW again, not because of burn out, not because of some toxic behaviour, not because I no longer enjoy the game play, but because the learning curve and required time investment to acquire that knowledge to allow anyone the gear up quickly isn't provided. I have found wow to be a fantastic game for anyone who has the time to an enormous amount on it, but as a new player (i say this instead of returning because this is nothing like WotLK) I dont want to sink that much time into something i ''might'' enjoy again. and starting out a 0g to build up to buy a small peice of gear that can push me over a tiny threshold to even get into heroic dungeons is a nightmare. The economy is not entirely blizzards fault but its yet another task that any new player is crippled with. I no longer want to be a part of this game and it saddens me that I feel like I has this choice or the option spend most of my time reading guides on how to play the game. I hope you continue your great content creation and that i havnt bummed you out to much. thx.

    I was introduced to WoW by family and friends. Sadly it didn't end well, I was used as the mobile backpack or joined their guilds that never did anything and I got no help in anything. I was/am interested in becoming a serious player but got stuck into newbie land. HOW TO GET THERE, was my biggest question. I became so worried that I sucked that I didn't want to join random groups and eventually I leave the game frustrated. I come back to the game because I love it and get mocked for doing so and not having everything on point. It feels like an endless cycle. I plan on getting better by having FUN and making mistakes. So thanks for your efforts, I'll be trying to get out of my own rut!

    I was that person. Returning to WoW after not playing since Cata launched. The biggest thing that lured me back was allied races, only to find out after preordering BFA and trying to create one that it was going to be a huge rep grind that took weeks, if not months, for someone who can't play everyday. Pretty bummed, probably won't stick around after this month runs out.

    Good luck. Hopefully this series will unveil some tips on how to get into m+ as a dps. I get passed over on low level keys even though I outgear them, presumably because either a) raider.io (which I cant get up since I cant do m+) or b) someone 3 ilevels above me also applied and bigger number bigger deeps right?
