One of the best wingers in the league at the time. Was still very good in his first couple of years at United, but later started declining and turning more into a full back, losing his pace and skills. People forgot what an exciting winger he was back in his prime.
Ashley Young is horrendously underrated as a player. Rarely did you find wingers who could run past people, stand people up and their delivery was outstanding, all at the same time. One of the best wingers the league has ever produced. And still going at 40-odd.
For me that was the most exciting period of the Premier League, watching it since 2002. The top teams were regularly finishing almost in the finals of the CL (Liverpool and United winning it once and getting to another final in that period, Chelsea and Arsenal had one final each, plus a ton of semi finals)... Besides the top four you always had some dangerous, very strong teams able to cause an upset, like Villa, Tottenham, Everton... You had a lot of quality in the middle if the league with the teams like Blackburn, Bolton... Fulham. Stoke were obviously notoriously tough to play against. I forgot a few teams surely. City were obviously nowhere near today's level, but they already had a fun team at the time able to cause trouble against anyone on a good day. The PL didn't have the money it has nowadays, but the quality and competitiveness was maybe even higher at time.
Not really, I would say that prime Premier League is now, there are so many strong teams in the league. In 06-10, City was not that good, Arsenal squad disappeared after that CL final, Liverpool was not as half as good as now even they played one CL final, let's be real, they were not as good as now, Tottenham as well, they started being something after 2010. Good period but not better than today, but I guess you guys are just nostalgic.
@@josephcole8046Hm, ok, and when I said weren't more than 6 teams? What should I do, list all the teams? My point is that both top teams and mid table teams are now better than they were before. Some are weaker, like Man UTD and Chelase but with all that money they will be back. Brighton from today for example would destroy Blackburn or Bolton from that time.
@@GuINES-mG Irrelevant to the conversation. Perhaps you're talking about the quality of teams being better? In which case you're right (not the players), but that becomes a pointless argument because in 10 years time, the teams then will be better than they are now and it just becomes a question of observing linear time. I am not talking about the quality of the coaching, and neither is anyone else when they say the phrase I used.
Ashley Young was definitely the star but there was a time when Gabby Agbonlahor was one of the fastest players in the world and scored 9, 11, 12 and 13 league goals in consecutive seasons. He fell off remarkably fast but there was a time where he looked like he was going to be amazing. Agbonlahor, Carew, Young, Milner, Downing, Barry, Reo-Coker, Petrov, Collins, Dunne, Cuellar, Davies. I had some of my best FM saves with that side.
I always bought him on FIFA back when he was still in Aston Villa, he was a special winger, I always called him "Nani, but British"😂. Even on his first season at United, he was one of my fav players after Nani and Chicarito. He was great, I still missed him as a winger
Yeah even though I'm still in my 20's, I feel the same way! Don't forget Gabby Agbonlahor too. For 2-3 seasons he was absolutely dangerous. He didn't have a lot of good years at the top of his game by elite standards, but younger fans tend to disrespect his football ability far too much. That Villa team was so good, their CB Laursen was an incredible defender but could never stay fit! I remember seeing some stats with him even back in those days, showing Villa without fail being 2nd or 3rd when he was playing, then he got injured, they would slide down the table and inevitably finish 6th like they did for a good few years.

He was absolutely one of the best and most dangerous wingers in the league at his peak, in his final couple of years at Villa. Absolutely the best Villa player in that team tham almost catched top 4 at one point. Also in his first year or two at United he was still a top player, but they had so much quality there he was rotated like many players (Nani, Valencia, Park, Giggs etc). Gradually he started losing his pace and skills after a few years there. At a later stage he started turning into a full back, that was unimaginable to me watching him in his younger years. For the guys who only catched him in his later part of his career, when he was more a wing back/full back, it's very hard to imagine what an exciting, fast, electric, skilled winger he was in his prime.

Plenty of good teams then that would kind of be on par with the current day standards. Behind them, you had Everton, Tottenham, and Villa who were all incredibly good teams, that again, each played differently from each other. I would liken them to the Newcastle's and Villa's of the past two seasons. Tottenham broke into 4th in 2010, but all these teams were very capable of breaking that top 4. Everton were just genuinely good and almost always seemed to finish 5th, Spurs were incredibly dangerous in attack but conceded a lot, and Villa starting XI were the best of the three in my opinion. Their big problem was injuries. Back then it was unheard of to give Chelsea a good game at Stamford Bridge, but Villa always seemed to cause them problems. They did the same with Liverpool and Arsenal, but United not so much. After those teams, then you had Blackburn who were very good, Bolton were a very solid and dangerous team (but exiting their 'peak' years when they would get top 6/7) and the likes of Fulham and Portsmouth who could beat any team on the day. But that also went for all the teams below that. Wigan would give you a game, so would Newcastle, Middelsbrough, Stoke, even Reading finished 8th or 9th playing some great attacking football! From top to bottom, it was just great games nearly every week.
