Much of the sharia deals with managing slaves. The English translation of the sharia manual "Reliance of the Traveller" deliberately leaves out the entire section on slaves. No guesses why they did that. The same thing happens with many of the English translations of tafsir, such as Ibn Kathir. They leave out all the embarrassing material.

Abdullah Sameer do you believe that Trajectory Hermaneutics is actually a valid concept in Islam, not just for slavery? When I was a Muslim I never heard the term. I'm not convinced now and I see it as modern tool of apologetics to save Islam's image. Mufti Abu Laith complains about Umar overruling the quran and then does the same thing by declaring slavery in the modern age as haram when clearly the quran doesn't and there's no clear indication in the hadith corpus that Muhammad intended to eradicate slavery. If I remember correctly Muhammad still owned slaves at the time of his death but I don't know if they were freed or bequeathed. His sahabah certainly had no problems with dealing in slaves.

I've heard both incredibly high and incredibly low estimates of the numbers. Any ideas on which are closer to accurate?
Many were forced to trek across the Sahara, and it's been argued that 90& died on the trek so the numbers actually kidnapped were 10 times higher. Others were shipped by sea around East Africa. There was also a Mediterranean slave trade.
When the Atlantic slave trade began, how was it related to these earlier ones?

    • @annegreengables6367

There are excellent articles from impartial sources about the Islamic slave trade a/k/a Arab Slave Trade. He is one of slave trade lasted three times longer and then slave five times more Africans than the Atlantic slave trade. Saudi Arabia only banned slavery in 1976 due to pressure from western corporations. They threatened to stop buying oil from OPEC and halt weapons sales. It is still legal in Sudan and Mauritania. Qatar treats foreign workers so badly, that it is effectively slavery.

I am a former christian and muslim from the US. However i reject the writings of men applied backwards to scripture. God tells us to use our reason and apply our intellect. Having said that, i too still have much to understand while studying the Quran. In the Quran there seems to be three perspectives of revelation., prior to Muhammad, contemporary to Muhammad and what occurs after Muhammad. Those contexts are important. Slavery has always been and continues to be prevelant in human society, in one form or another. Muhammad was operating within an ancient paradigm. It wasn't his mission to change society or create a global caliphate. His mission was to warn individual men on accepting God as one, believing in the last day and to perform your duty to God in preparation for judgement. The same mission as all prophets. The world is the world, but any believer who is on the path would of course come to the conclusion that the practice of slavery is best left aside. Correct? I don't have chapter and verse memorized but Muhammad said as much. Each of us must work through our individual journey to get closer to God including turning from all of the terrible behaviours that lead us to the fire. Only God forbids and He is very specific in scripture and truth be told it's not a whole lot. It's on our conscience to decide. That's my perspective. (I would not personally hold another human being as obligated to me)

    • @azhaniaorgena6941

Damn, you obviously have been hoodwinked by whoever it is that converted you. Yes, Muhammad claimed in his Quran that he has been ORDERED to fight UNTIL ALL RELIGION BELONGS TO ALLAH. In basic english, it means he is to fight until all the world become muslim...global caliphate.
Secondly, he claimed he is the best moral example EVER for mankind. This was a man who owned his fellow humans as sex slaves! A man who lined up and beheaded more than 600 jews in a day! A man who tortured another man called kinana for money by tying him down and placing a bowl of fire on his chest! He later took kinana's wife as a slave and gave her to one of his men to rape her because his men were missing their wives! Upon realizing who she was, he took her for himself and married her. These are all in hadiths and tafsirs. They are all in there, read them for yourself. Islam is a CULT OF MUHAMMAD. I know because i was born into this cult and practiced it for more than 40 years of my life. Muslims are the best of salesmen when it comes to selling their cult because they will say anything you want to hear. Muhammad was not different from all cult founders. Except he was a really, really horrible man.

Muhammad never freed Bilal, his BIack slave convert. After Muhammad died, Bilal was passed on as a slave to Bakr as he had to beg Bakr to free him:
Narrated Qais: Bilal said to Abu Bakr, "If you have bought me for own then keep me for yourself to serve, but if you have bought me for the sake of Allah, then free me to do work for Allah."

@@Ruby-G There is no compulsion in religion in Islam. A person who is forced to convert to islam, their islam is not accepted by Allah unless through their own free will, he is otherwise considered a "munafiq" or hypocrite. There was mutiple POW comabant non muslims enslaved. The Ghilmans has huge power within the abbasid household and they became prominent land owners and became notoriously wealthy.
Bilal was never owned by Muhammad. He was a slave of the Quraysh and was bought and freed by Abu Bakr under the command of Muhammad pbuh. Abu Bakr negotiated his purchase, and. Abu freed Bilal for the purpose of charity and goodness under Muhammads direction. The Qur'an recognises the emancipation of slaves as one of the permissible expenditures of alms and charity. (See the Qur'an 9:60, 2:177). Emancipation of slaves is the purest form of charity and retribution in Islam.
The hadith you quote was a response made by Bilal to Abu Bakr who suggested Bilal listen to him and stay in the safety and comfort of Hejaz(mecca/medina) to govern, spread religious knowledge and aid him an a advisor, rather than risk his life by going on a holy war (jihad), for which Bilal responded to Abu Bakr "If you have bought me for yourself then keep me (for yourself), but if you have bought me for Allah's Sake, then leave me for Allah's Work." Pay attention, by "Allahs work" Bilal means Jihad. After which Abu Bakr let Bilal go and he fought mutiple battles in present day Levant region. The hilarious thing is, the hadith you pointed out actually refutes you by 1) Pointing our Bilal was freed by Abu Bakr, not Muhammad 2) Proves Bilals piety and faithfulness to the teachings of Muhammad and Allah, by preferring holy war as opposed the relative comfort of Madina where he is a senior figure and authority.
