As an AFK arena player for almost 5 years. I would most definitely dread carefully as they made that game entirely impossible to beat the whales now. Which is what will probably happen with Journey. This being said, I am currently playing and enjoying it more than arena

as someone who's been playing for 3 months (via beta server), the only grindy part is that you have to wait from time to time for enough resources to level your heroes up.
you can definitely whale to speed up progression/do better in arena/event rankings, but it's definitely not necessary. i rank 50-100th solely f2p.
